I think you misunderstand what I mean by building rapport. You are supposed to do that before getting the number. The whole point of meeting IRL is you make a solid first impression in person. If you don’t do that first your odds will definitely go down.
I don’t ever just drop a pickup line and get a number. I also don’t believe in texting early in relationships. The texting trap is a byproduct of app culture. It requires too much investment of my time and leaves less mystery for a date.
I also don’t use pickup lines. If It’s a place with a shared interest like dancing, climbing gyms or concert I will approach and ask them how they are doing, tell them my name and compliment them. First compliment is never about how attractive they are instead about something unique about what they are wearing or doing.
Then I ask them to dance / climb whatever and continue conversation in between. After 5 or 10 minutes ask them if they are single, get the number. By then they will be interested if you have a chance. If it works, keep talking to them. If it doesn’t meet someone else.
Non shared interest places are a little harder like grocery stores. There i will just make a joke or a compliment as an opener. Then ask if they would be interested in doing something specific like see a movie tmrw night. I use specifics in these situations to eliminate flakes. Someone interested will say yes or suggest something else. Any other answer is a no go.

It really sounds like OP is just getting into cold approach/pickup, bc it doesn’t take long to learn that she probably won’t even respond to your first message and it’s all about volume, if she doesn’t immediately blow you out with “oh I have a boyfriend”. The secret to an abundant dating life is to approach 100 women, get rejected by 60, 40 give you their number, 25 of those respond to the first message, you get 10 of those to agree to a date, 5 confirm on the day of and actually show up on the date, and you ultimately fuck 1, 2-3 if you really have top-tier game. Rinse and repeat until you have a nice rotation built up.

I think cold approaches in college or the workplace should be considered a particular type of cold approach, because, even if it was the first time you saw that girl, you shared some common ground, you're not a complete stranger, you're "a guy from college", it's similar to cold approaching a neighbor, you might not know, but you live in the same building/street or whatever, it makes it substantially easier.
Try approaching a woman that you don't really know if you will see again. She knows that the main way for you guys to see each other again is if she gives you some contact information of hers.
Hell, I'm not in the game, but back when I was in college, I made like 3 o 4 cold approaches (nothing sexual come out of them either, in some cases because I didn't want to), but it was WAAAAAY, WAAAAY easier than doing it on the street or in a grocery store.

I take cold-approaching to mean outside of safe environments like this. Approaching a girl at say a coffee shop is very different to at your friends party.

Im doing an experiment to soon be released on reddit. With a lot of evidence and proof on:
Beginner guy road to 10 dates strictly cold approaching. With statistics. I might push it to 15 dates just so its more solid info
Currently with 6 total dates and about 500 approaches i believe. Currently on break

Congrats on the approach OP, sounds like it went really well and I know how hard it can be to do.
But I have a few concerns as an amateur to this. Is it not important to build up some kind of rapport and talk to her a bit first before immediately inviting her on a date. I don’t think anyone has any incentive to go out with some random person they spoke to for 60 seconds. I certainly wouldn’t. I think it’s really important to build a connection and not make it feel like she’s the 50th person you’ve used that line on or asked out.

nah he said he doesn't even know if she'll go out with him or not. It's literally a coin flip, u should almost always build rapport in the moment where you're meeting up . At least in my situations, I went to a trampoline park saw a cute girl and walked up to her, asked for her snap and then just left. This ended up with her texting me weirdly and being dry. I built no rapport and even if she does consider me attractive, I'm just some random stranger she talked to for 3 minutes.. Afterwards I realized that I should have asked to bounce wit her and we can play some games, that way I can get to know her and maybe even do more with her on the same day.... Yea maybe she could've been super interested from first sight but most of the time that's not how it works , some girls will be interested but most times you need some time to get them comfortable with you, from then you can escalate and ask to go out...
