You are 100% right. Take a big dose of shrooms and contemplate on these ideas.
Then hit the gym hard. Take it seriously. You've seen the illusion, great. Now take action.

Everyone wants to be a boxer until they get hit in the face. I think the problem is much more complex than just society. And you had a part to play in that too.
Firstly society does push toughness. How many motivational videos exist on YouTube talking about poor people making it. David Goggins is a motivational speaker with millions of views. People heap praises on people they believed to have been hard enough to succeed. Just look up motivation on YouTube and you will find them. So I disagree with the premise that society only focuses on developing soft men.
Edge is developed by doing difficult things. Working out, playing sports, passing a licensing exam on 2% of people pass etc. Ignoring the girl who disrespected you even though you like her a lot and want a relationship with her.
The problem is many of us talk a shit ton about developing edge but don't want to go through pain to do it. We don't want to go out and get rejected 1000 times to learn to shrug it off. Or go to the gym when we feel tired and exhausted and eat only 75% recommended calories to get lean. Hell, some of us don't even want to study to pass classes.
The truth is having edge is tough and few people want to go through the suffering it takes to have it.
If you want to start developing it you have to just expose yourself to your insecurities until you don't feel bothered by them anymore.

Yup you’re 100% right. Let me tell you this my friend, being nice gets you nowhere. In dating or in life.
Women want a masculine dominant man who isn’t nice and men respect other men who are masculine and dominant.
Sure society breeds men nowadays to be soft, but there are plenty of masculine dominant men out there. Now that you know who to be, work on being it.
EDIT: I’m not saying don’t be kind. They are two different things.
[–]SentientCouch 31 points32 points33 points 4 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
being nice gets you nowhere
I'm going to counter this thrust.
Being kind is a value. Being able to assert yourself in a way that is helpful or beneficial to others is a sign of strength. "Nice" can be bullshit. We all know people who can put on a nice face while they push a blade into you. Adopting an outlook of benevolence and kindness, for me, requires mental work. It takes some focus. I have a rough side that can get me into some bad shit if I don't check it. When I keep that snarl in check and let my lighter side shine through, I attract beautiful things and people into my life.
Maybe my time living abroad in Asian societies is starting to rub off on me, but there's a genuine power in being able to chill your ego and extend a hand to someone in need. It doesn't always end with you getting bit. And if it does, well... sometimes you get bit. Heal up.
I know what you're saying. No, don't be anyone's doormat. Don't bend over. But a respectful bow is not the same as bending over. Yes, be dominant. But don't be a tyrant. Petty power-trippers are everywhere and deserve no respect. Just be in control of yourself. You'll attract people who respect that, and the best of them are in control of themselves, too. Men and women.
[–]riversmoke 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Nice is helping someone because you want something in return or you're trying to meet their expectations.
Kind is helping someone because they need it, with no expectation of something in return.
Getting yourself mentally healthy allows you to see the difference in yourself. The difference of living by your expectations and not theirs.
When you can keep your kindness and live by your own expectations of yourself then you can ignore 90% of the BS around seduction. It is the heart of the "Be yourself" comment.

Jesus christ the amount of incels in this thread is insane.
There is power in being kind. You can be kind and sexy/masculine. There is a fine line being a doormat and being kind. Being kind is showing a personal characteristic of power while being 'nice' can easily be just a facade

[–]heroyi 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I think people are getting the word nice and kind confused.
Helping an old lady is a nice act. But it is a kind thing to do. You aren't doing it (hopefully) for an ulterior motive. You are doing it cause you are emphatic . You are kind.

Hold up nobody is saying don’t be kind. Don’t go calling me an incel. Absolutely always be kind.
I am talking about guys who give compliments and shit to girls and expect them to sleep with them because of it. It’s scummy and has ulterior motive.
Being kind is not the same and it’s not what I said, that comes from character.
My comment wasn't necessarily pointed to you but more so to the whole thread. Especially OP with his crying
[–]Silver-Variation89031 point 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Lol np 😂
Oh I totally agree with that. Always be kind.
When I say nice I do mean people being nice trying to get something out of someone with an ulterior motive.
Being kind comes from character. Generally in dating, guys being nice is being nice with expectation of getting a reward, which is scummy af.

You need to have a balance, OP. My man is pretty much a teddy bear when it comes to me or kids being around. But he can have an “edge” when he needs to. I don’t think you have to change your entire personality / lifestyle, just find your backbone and use that. Don’t be walked all over. Stand up for what you believe in. Stand up for the people you love and yourself.
[–]Delicious_Ad_1853 15 points16 points17 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
"Hard", "soft", "edge"... These words are vague metaphors that have a lot of bullshit baked into them. Don't think in those terms.
"Authenticity" is the word you're looking for. It's a wonderful thing and you're absolutely right that there's a lot of pressure to be inauthentic. I'm glad to hear that you're ready stand up to that pressure and become your true self. Best wishes on your journey!

I do have some trauma that I need to overcome, but so do so many other guys who have girlfriends.
The question is will I even ever get over a lot of this trauma. And why do I need to become an enlightened monk when other dudes have obvious problems and still meet women just fine.
[–]d_eggoo 10 points11 points12 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You don’t have to be an enlightened monk to overcome trauma and you need to stop looking at what others have. Cause you don’t know what they have went through to obtain what you see. Understand that the world ain’t fair, the world doesn’t own you anything and you are in charge of your own life/happiness/purpose. Now the one thing I can say is you should go seek professional help cause you can only get so much help here. I believe in you bro. You got this.

I just turned 26, let me tell you now nobody in their 20s has it figured out and those you think do are just pretending.
Stay true to your self, I promise you that someone will love everything about you inside and out, someone can only know you as deep as they know themselves.
Enlightenment is knowing that we know nothing at all, buddhism teaches us that suffering comes from desire, what is it that you desire at the core? Are you wanting to stop being lonely or do you want a girlfriend?
I was known as the sensitive kid growing up, I got bullied through all of schooling, mental disorders, childhood trauma, drug addiction, toxic relationships.
All of that has definitely made me want to be bitter and I genuinely feel it sometimes, but this craving for attention from others is hell. Don't compare yourself to others, they are on their time, you are on yours.
A couple can celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary while absolutely being unable to tolerate each other, someone became the owner of a successful business at 20 while someone in their 40s is going to college for the first time. Some meet their partner in highschool and stay together forever, someone at 60 can meet the love of their life after failed marriages and die happy of old age.
Everything is relative, you are on your own path, you will make it to the end on your own time and find out that all the inbetweens are worth noticing, things aren't always black and white, there is so much color in life.
Forgive the rant, don't forget to eat today, it will get better. Make yourself happy for yourself and the people that belong in your life will find you eventually.

As you are grown up now, you should hang around only with people that think likewise, and review teachings of your family, teachers, friends, television etc. Most people just want you to be like they want in their world, but they really don't give a shit about your wellbeing and viewpoint.
You can still make a lot of progress in this dimension. Just start with not giving away your energy to people carelessly, learn to stay silent or leave. Make gradual progress.

My man , I’m in the exact same situation , I recently turned 25 and I think I had a sort of “ middle age crisis” where all of a sudden I focused on who I’ve been till now and if it’s in line with my true self. I’m now on this journey of discovering myself with a focus on who I want to be. It gets hard but it is how it’s suppose to be bc there is no improvement in our “comfort zone”. Metaphorically is the same as taking off your bedsheets in the morning you can lay there or get up. I’m actually looking for a feed in which we can share our thoughts and inspire each other since keeping a productive and positive mindset is challenging.

Yeah I noticed this too. I think there's a big push to making everyone a pacifist and to promote peace and cooperation above everything else. I think the intentions are good but the problem is that it runs counter to human nature. We have to struggle in order to progress. We have to be ambitious and aggressive to get the things we want sometimes, and it's attractive to be assertive and decisive. Successful men and passive men are opposites and society is struggling to come to terms with that.

I completely agree, I meant putting peaceful cooperation above all else, often to the detriment of progress. For example not confronting an incompetent teammate in order to spare their feelings. I think being too passive is what goes against human nature not the part about teamwork in and of itself. We need teamwork, but we also need competence and I think the current climate frowns upon people who utilize their competence to get ahead

Being nice in relationships gets you nothing. Not in romantic relationships with women, and not with male friends.
Being nice in your work life gets you nothing either. Working 50% harder out of 'company loyalty' might get you a 5% raise. Being nice in negotiations with customers, suppliers, whatever it is, gets you nowhere.
It's stupid to see that we're thought everywhere to be the nice guy everywhere in our life while it's just not leading to anything good.

internet has loser bias, internet advice vs real life advice (& observation) is wildly different. loser men and loser women - the rest of society is enjoying their lives, therefore advice from here is usually not good.
The median age in western society is 42. This too should be very alarming for the bias you get.
Basically, all the women who spent their younger years chasing their superiors but are now +33y (usually no longer desirable and no attention) and couldn't find someone to settle with - are now spend their time giving terrible advice to both men (lower your standards to non defect plain average men) and women (dump immediately and look for mr perfect), and are bashing men (how dare you bring up any issue/ differences).
Which results in this sub (vs the dating subs) being the best advice sub for men.

[–]headcase1111 10 points11 points12 points 4 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link
I do take ownership.
I take ownership that I suck at dating and I'm not attractive.
But I think its also in part due to a lot of the advice I've been given. I feel like I've spent my whole life being raised to be a people pleaser, but its not what people like.
Just one quick example off the rip, society will tell you to constantly be considerate of what other people want to do, and make sure everyone is having a good time.
But women will openly tell you that they want someone who takes command and decides dates for them.
So you're literally spending your whole life listening to the idea of "Ask her what she wants to do", when in all actuality its a notoriously bad idea.
[–]alwayslogicalman 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It’s perfectly fine to be considerate of other people dude, nothing wrong at all. Just don’t be over pandering such that you don’t have an opinion of your own at all. Trust me, I’ve seen lots of considerate nice guys who get lots of chicks. Thing is- they’re nice to everyone. All the ladies call him a gentleman and blush about him. He just does it in a very confident, suave manner. You can honestly be anything- just pull it off with flair. You don’t need to be an asshole at all- it’s just assholes have the confidence that girls want.

This sub wouldn’t be as large as it is if everything was just fine and dandy with the advice we were all given, would it? There wouldn’t be multiple subs for it, would there be? The dating industry wouldn’t be a billion dollar industry if the advice society gave worked, would it?

[–]headcase1111 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Why do you need to improve?
Because what society has taught or told you isn’t sufficient to getting the results you want.
What do you need to reflect on?
How you failed, and what you need to do different, which, is probably what society told you.
I’m not going to argue any more.
You think I’m some woman hating piece of shit, which is absolutely not the case. I just feel like the way I was raised and what I was told isn’t effective for attracting women, and like I have a lot of relearning to do. I do believe it’s no one’s fault but my own and I have a lot of shit to work on. But I still feel like I was lied to about what I should do.

[–]christopherhorton 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
IMO, we are raised to be 'soft' because raising strong, intelligent men is hard to do right. Parents would rather have a submissive child that follows their every instruction and demand than have a difficult child that stands up for themselves. It starts there, then boys don't know how to interact with their testosterone, with their boys, and with girls as well. The blind lead the blind to unhealthy habits without strong role models that know respect. This turns into men that still don't know how to navigate the world, have a ton of trauma and hurt and feeling like the world owes them something. Wash, rinse, repeat. To be a cycle breaker is strong, standing up for your values, and path in life is strong. Be that strong, not walking over top of people to feel worthy strong.

If status creates sexual attraction in women, then demonstration of desire creates sexual arousal in women.
Without getting too deep into the research on female arousal (it’s messy and confusing, which shouldn’t surprise you), the leading theory on female arousal is women are turned on by bold behaviors, displays of bravery, and direct sexual desire, particularly when directed at the woman who is getting aroused.
Whether it’s Fabio the Firefighter or the sexy surfer who braves the 20 foot waves in frigid waters or the solider coming home from Nowhere-istan, displays of bravery turn women on more than anything else.
If you don’t believe me, go to your local book store and look at the romance novels. Romance novels are basically porn for women, and you’ll find that they all feature warriors, soldiers, bad boys, race car drivers, football players, firefighters, jet pilots, and enter-your-super-sexy-and-dangerous-occupation-here.
And not only are these men racy and exciting, but they’re usually brash and debonair — they say what they want and go after it without apology.
But what does this mean for a couple regular guys like you and me?
It means being nervous around her is going to be a pretty big turn off.
Afraid to talk to her, afraid to ask her out, afraid to kiss her, afraid to take her home — Fabio the Firefighter wouldn’t be afraid to ravish the shit of her, so why should you?
What it means is that despite every woman you’ve ever heard complain about men hitting on them, bold displays of interest actually work in your favor the majority of the time, as long as they’re demonstrated in a manner that is not too threatening or disrespectful.
A proper and honest sexual expression is powerful, and in our society, rare. In fact, there’s a LOT of societal pressure to hide and disassociate from our sexuality.
Many of us grow up with a great deal of sexual shame. And not only does this keep us afraid of expressing our sexual desires openly, but it creates an unhealthy neediness and worship of sex.Because honest and respectful demonstrations of sexuality are so rare, not only are women aroused by it, but it often hits them like a breath of fresh air.- Mark Manson

I think it started long before human society. You see, it’s usually dangerous/risky to go out on a limb because it greatly increases one’s chances of death, injury, or being ostracized. It’s rare for risky things to actually improve one’s overall well-being, which is why they’re called “risky.”
Being safe at all times makes it more likely that the person/animal will survive to pass on their genes. But of course, never taking risks causes them to develop into the type of creature that nobody (or few other creatures or only other low status creatures) will want to mate with to pass on those genes.

It drives me how wild how society raises men to be soft, but craves men with edge.
Society has basically spent all these years trying to cram you to being a people pleaser, but its appealing to almost no body.
Let's think about the stereotypical man's man here. Culture plays out in movies and on TV shows so let's draw from actors who play prominent characters in various forms of media.
And so on. Now what kinds of traits are reflected in the characters they often play, that reflect on what society values in men?
These are generally considered traits that aren't considered soft.

So I'm curious about how and in what way you feel you were "taught" a view of manhood that's pretty much the opposite of mainstream.
Or is to really that you're unsure how to navigate a seductive situation? Because it's pretty damn common for men to reach high school graduation age without picking up the basic social skills to do so.
And the problem there is that the skills we aren't picking up, are people skills often seen as "feminine."

I feel lied to, and I watch people all around me who aren't following the conventional life advice are getting success and finding happiness with others.
What advice are they following and do you have think it's working for them?

I get I'm soft....
In what way do you actually think you're "soft?"
