I go back and forth on this question a lot. A few days ago I read research that adjusted the Hatfield and Clarke studies such that women were equally interested in casual sex as men, and for decades evolutionary psychologists and sociologists have taken it as gospel that that wasn’t the case. Plus on the Facebook Dating all like half the girls say in their profiles that they’re down for “something casual”.

I think women first and foremost fear sexual violence, then after that social repercussions from being a slut, but underneath all of it I think they’re similar to men. Yes there’s a range of tastes for men and we like different things, but overall the traditionally attractive model is going to get more attention than the average girl. Same for men.

A lot of other things like behavior play a part in attraction as well.

For example, would you crush on a physically attractive girl that chain-smokes? Or a handsome guy who is afraid to sleep alone with the lights off?

It’s the same with both sexes.

If looks is that important, how come that women like drug dealers, Mick Jagger, tribe leaders in cavemen days etc?

If we'd go into extremes, if women had to pick between the most handsome guy ever and the bravest guy ever, majority will pick the bravest guy.

Also, how many times can you hear from women that some guys are pretty but just don't have "x factor", or they are boring, needy etc?

Being handsome helps. But so does game, money, social status, an element of danger.

If you are already handsome, work on other areas, you'll get even better girls.

If you are not attractive, again work on other areas. Instead of 0-1 girls, you'll be able to choose from 10-20-50 girls.

Attraction is almost entirely about male behaviors. Looks play a small role. But, obviously, a lot of guys can’t get past this as evidenced by at least one post like this per week. But, go ahead and believe it’s all about looks and game isn’t real. It lowers the competition for the rest of us.

I'm a guy and I dress down, or even style as to not be as attractive as I can be.

I thrive on the attention, but I don't enjoy the media. It never shuts off.

Does anyone else do that? And why?

I don't really use it as a tactic, but sometimes i might meet someone and not be at my best, if I'm short on time. Then I meet them again, and I'll be all cleaned up. Then it's like her wish came true. Then she's more apt to dress up more and look better, too.

I think sometimes they look at me like...in their head... "If he shaved....got rid of that old shirt, and wore better shoes, etc..."

I think girls sometimes see us for what we could be, and not what we are in the moment.

Every human is a 'visual creature'. This is the reason why we have designs in cars, phones and what not.
Eyes is one of our most imprtent sensing organ. with out eye sight we almost can't exist. Women and men care for it eqaully imo.

A bonus if you aren’t feel as confident about your body/face/physical appearance: try working on your sense of personal style. That could mean anything for you.

For me, I like the punk/goth/alternative scene, so if I see a guy with blue jeans a black t shirt and slicked back hair, I’m all over it. Even a simple band-tee could do it! I saw a guy with a Rancid shirt and had to go talk to him about it. I’m a big Rancid fan :)

There’s some dudes out there that are very average looking physically, but they get eyes because they have really cool shoes, or maybe they styled a nice jacket with a button up shirt. Maybe they have some cool glasses. Idk, obviously every woman is going to have a different preference. But I just feel like trying out a new clothing style and wearing something that makes you feel good really sets you apart!

I think you're going to like this. Women's gaze is different than men's. Women want a buff, good-looking man, but he is also less likely to get responses from women when he's too buff. Women are more selective because they have to carry a baby, so being too good-looking or buff puts off a girl because the man may not want sick around. This is why Boy Bands are a thing. Yes, they are good-looking, but all their songs and image is around being looked at as datable, and they will stick around. This is also why guys that go to the gym every day are more likely to get responses and compliments from other guys than girls. Guys think that is what girls want, but that is not the whole story. Never seen an extremely attractive guy, like top 3 percent get friend zoned by women. Lol. There was a study that men are more visual due to the constant visual stimulation through media. I have never bought it.

If you have lots of money being not so attractive won’t matter really to certain women. Most men and women could be way above average in the looks department if they got themselves to under 15% body fat by eating right/exercising, combing their hair, having nice straight teeth/good dental hygiene, not having facial tattoos/nose rings/blue hair, and by dressing well. I don’t believe there’s anyone who is inherently ‘ugly.’ Sure there are exceptions like Marilyn Monroe and Rock Hudson, but you don’t have to be them to be as attractive!

Yes everyone likes looking at nice looking things. However, just because you're a troll doesn't mean you can't get with beautiful women. Yes improve your looks, it opens up more opportunities for you, but don't sit here and think that looks are the only part of the equation. There are plenty it beautiful women dating guys uglier than you. Personality is the no 1 thing.

If you think about it, it's completely logical. It's a remaining of our evolution as humans. In order to let the species survive and evolve, females naturally choose the male with the best genetics. And how do you determine the best genetics in the early days without technology? It's the best looking male. Tall, strong, good physique, symmetrical hunter face, low voice that indicates high testosterone, etc.

Today females aren't really reliant on these traits anymore, but it's still in their subconsciousnes... So therefore they are way more attracted to hot guys even if they have non-physical traits that are a turn off

But unlike men's primary attraction being visual, women can be stimulated more through your personality and "game". For men looks gets you in the door easier. For women without the looks... I’m a 3 in looks and I have very good looking male friends 7s, 8s and 9’s. They don’t have to work for women, they just use dating apps and they date on average 3 women at the same time. The number yearly should be around 30-50 women a year.

Me, I get 1-2 a year, if I get lucky.

How this dynamic works in person?

Same thing at the starting point, they always get hit by women in the club or pub. They chase them without them saying a word. Me, I never go chased by a women before saying a word, they never pay attention to me at the starting point.

What about charisma, dressing sharp, having very good physique (6 pack), social status (money, social position, purpose, danger)?

It helps, I eat healthy, I’m lean and Cristiano Ronaldo (with a bit more muscle), I worked in my charisma (everyone says I’m really charismatic), I dress sharp (always get complemented for that), I’m working on my purpose that involves getting rich and a lot of social status.

as a woman I have noticed that hot guys have access to more women because they have more options so women definitely notice looks, but women also get seduced in a more emotional way so charm and personality as well as being able to provide helps men that are average or below average in looks

Yes, absolutely accurate. I love watching my man strut around in the buff or new clothing. I love looking at his arms and chest and touching them. His face is freaking gorgeous.

If I can add just one thing for you, most women are visual. We are checking out your style, flair, and hair/hygiene. But your face is incredibly important to most of us. If you poll most women, a lot will mention your smile as a top characteristic.

And I don't think most of the guys struggling with women smile much or have learned how to have different smiles. Work on your damn smiles, fellas.

True. We all can't hide the fact that we (both men and women) are visual. We all are sexual and have needs and desires.

At the same time, guys are more willing to look past the visual and be with a woman who is average and be with that woman versus the other way around. Women typically will try to be with that top guy who all women want only to find out that it is not worth it until it is too late (he won't pick you to be the sole person to be with, women wanting kids but reaching close to, at, or older than 30, putting all other guys in the friend zone and then expect those same guys to pick them again).

Back to the original post, overall, yes, women are visual as well, but it is what you do beyond the looms that matter.
