Pre-FDS I spent most of my day texting in between work, meals, gym etc. I had textuationships with platonic guy friends, texted with exes or LVM, texted gal pals here and there, and received/sent stupid links. None of these convos were productive or meaningful but I guess they made me feel more connected with others, even if superficially so. Now with FDS (and my meditation practice too), I am more aware of the content/context and substance of what I say/write. If it’s something negative or low value, it’s a lot harder for me to engage in or even tolerate. Old me would feel guilty for changing the dynamic of these friendships and I would likely feel obligated to give responses that I found were forced. I am not rude to people, but I redefined myself and have set boundaries now. I also realize how sooo many of the texts were draining on me. I gave a lot of support and dealt with needy/manipulative people via text on a daily basis, without realizing it …for years! Now I read messages under a whole new set of eyes and they almost all translate to: give me attention. Sometimes I miss the feeling of connectedness but in those moments I come here, call a loved one, go for a walk, or relax. I realize meaningless texting is lonelier than solitude.
