I had a similar situation while working at Walgreens. The ladies would always complain about it being a "boys club" because for the most part I would be working in the stock room rather than on a register. One of the cashiers voiced their complaint to the manager on duty. He pulled her back into the stock room and said "Okay, what we are doing is moving these 100lb boxes of potting soil from the back of the stock room to the front in preparation for the Summer isle." Needless to say she moved one hand truck load and came back up to the register and told me she didn't want to work back there anymore.

Reminded me of this feminist i used to know on my shooting team. She would always bang on about equal rights and how women are just as strong as men. But as soon as there was shit to be carried down the range she would moan and whine at how fucking tired she is and how it should be the men doing all the work and then proceed to sit on the minivan and just chat whilst we all worked our asses off. After about a month (only shot at weekends) i blew my lid and verbally slaughtered this woman. Never saw her sit around and moan again after that day

I remember that story, made me happy. That is where the illusion of a wage gap comes from, men who are willing to take risky, longer hour, harder, physical jobs in exchange for them being paid more, and women aren't.

As much as I laugh about how women refuse to "man-up" yet want the same wage, I have to say that there are some girls who do the dirty hard work. My girlfriend is a welder ( I was too up on the oil rigs, before I joined the fire service) and she comes home fucking covered in grease and dirt, sore and wanting a cold fucking beer just like I did. Women CAN do these jobs, but a LOT of them are just too fucking lazy.

This is what I have been wondering. When they say women are paid 20% less, is it because they are doing the same exact job and being discriminated against, or is it because they simply have lesser paying jobs? Bullshit like this makes me question that illusion.

Would this even be viable? Eg, if I was hired by a mining company as a programmer, could they outsource the programming but keep me on as a miner, claiming that they haven't fired me?

Yep, this is exactly it. I think part of the reason feminism started to gain popularity had to do with the automation of the work force. Before that women didn't want to fight for the same jobs as men because they were dangerous and hard. You go to a country where automation hasn't taken off yet and none of the women want to have those jobs. They'd rather stay at home and take care of the the children and who could blame them.
