Whoever did the inviting should pay until you get to a place where you guys are exclusively/seriously dating. Then it should be half and half, or however you as a couple have agreed to set it up. Just my opinion. Never understood why men are expected to pay every time

I've found this to be a very cultural thing. I'm from a culture where it's normal to split the bill or just pay for your own stuff, because that's seen as polite. Etiquette is seen as outdated and discriminating here (Norway).

I've been dating a British guy for the past 3 and a half years. When we went on our first date, I insisted on paying for my own stuff because I wanted our first date to be based on equal values/terms. He refused because he is more traditional and wanted to pay for everything, so I said okay what if we split the bill equally. It became a discreetly heated argument between the two in the middle of the restaurant. I let him have his way in the end because he was starting to get angry, and I didn't want it to escalate further.

But man I felt way more upset by that than I should have, I suppose. What he did went so strongly against my values, it's still something I think about now and again.

Of course in general we take turns paying for groceries and whatnot, and share expenses. But it was just something about that first date that was symbolic for me. Rambling aside, yeah it's absolute horseshit that men are supposed to pay for women. I think it's primitive and sexist.

My main problem with the "who pays" argument is that we now live in a society where we are blessed to have more women in the jobforce now than there's ever been, and many, many women work and earn their own wages now, BUT IT'S STILL NORMAL TO EXPECT THE MAN PAY FOR EVERYTHING! how does that make sense? This is why I love my girlfriend. I make about 2x what she makes but she's always trying to pay and contribute in other areas 100% of the cost. I sometimes let her pay but I definitely wouldn't expect her to contribute nearly what I contribute. Her attempts to contribute at all really drives me to be a better man.
