These "statistics" on men's views of rape have been circulating tumblr. I find them very hard to believe. Can anyone vouch for the source?

From what I can gather, it seems the reference is a book in which she references other studies (presumably). I couldn't find the original sources for these numbers and they look quite similar to other claims that have been brought up in the past where original sources also couldn't be found.

However, there's a lot of hyporbole going on and manipulating statistics to make some outrageous claims. First and foremost, the "8% have either attempted or successfully raped" is obviously inflated to carry more weight, otherwise the two categories (attempted and completed) would be separated. Also, one would have to know what definition of rape they were operating under. Would an 18 year old who had sex with his 17 year old girlfriend have to answer "yes"? That's a very different picture than the image is trying to convey.

Basically, the main issue with these numbers is that they're always presented in a vacuum devoid of the original source. It's impossible to evaluate their results or methods so it's useless to parrot them without any verifiable evidence.

35% of college men answered 2 or above on a 5 point scale when asked how likely they would be to rape if they were assured of not being caught.

That said, I think this is misleading because I believe the appropriate bar is people who said 3,4 or 5. (but even still he gets 20% of men said yes)

The scale was something like

1 - 0% chance

2 - 25% chance

3 - 50%

4 - 75%

5- 100%

People who said yes to one of these two questions were included:

These stats are rubbish. But there is no law against making stuff up or misinterpreting information. I could say 80% of women have made a false rape allegation against a boyfriend. It may get put out on Tumblr but it would not be correct. It could all be counterproductive. If a woman thinks everyone makes false rape allegations then she can too. A man might think well if everyone rapes I might as well too. People putting out stats have to be very careful and have a duty to ensure they are appox correct. This is not the case though.

I believe a few of these statistics (the two in the middle) come from a Neil Malamuth study where college men were surveyed if they would commit rape if they could get away with it. I would imagine that most people would commit crimes if they could get away with it, seems to be a hypothetical question that isn't reflected in reality.

Neil Malamuth based on his research sounds like an anti-porn male feminist. Surveys have a tendency to be the most unreliable research method which is why feminists tend to latch onto this form of research (statistic drastically changes just from simple rephrasing). Is there a peer review of this I wonder? Generally feminist research tends to be accepted in academia uncritically.

I would never rape a woman or force her to have sex. It makes no difference whether I was guaranteed to get away with it or not, whether she had a rape fantasy or not, etc. For me the whole point of sex is to turn a woman on and have her begging for me. If there is genuine resistance, then that's a total turn off. I can't be the only man who feels this way.

Mind you, we all know that women often say "no" when they mean "try harder". I've probably passed up lots of chances to get laid because I paid a woman the courtesy of taking her at her word, and backing off as soon as she said "no". It would be really nice to have a foolproof way of knowing when "no" doesn't really mean "no". Still, it's better to err on the side of caution and treat "no" as "no", and a woman as an adult who knows her own mind. The women who are most worth it aren't going to play stupid childish games like that anyway, and maybe some of the others will eventually learn that they are shooting themselves in the foot when they play those games on ordinary decent guys who would never dream of harming them.

The idea that "you should only have sex with a woman if she gives enthusiastic consent" just doesn't square with the reality that there are still many women who will say "no" out of habit no matter how badly they want sex, whether because they don't want to look or feel like sluts or they just enjoy toying with a guy and playing hard to get. But again I emphasize that it's better to be cautious and take "no" as "no" than face a false rape charge, though of course even "yes" can become "no" retroactively if the woman has regrets the next morning or years later.

TLDR - it's in your own interests to treat "no" as "no", but that still doesn't guarantee immunity from a false rape accusation.

What about that last percentage? I mean i don't know about you, but where i live even the 10-12 years dress up like hookers, wear makeup, padded bras etc. It always baffles me and i do think "Oh my god... what happened that even those young girls dress up like hookers or 'role models' from tv.. no wonder they get raped but" and i do not really feel sorry for them.
