It's complicated, but the extreme layman's summary is the coup that ousted Gorbachev in 1991 and ultimately ended the USSR was orchestrated by a small group of Soviet hardliners, many, but not all of them, in the KGB.

The largely bloodless coup eventually ended with the opposing Nationalist factions, led by Boris Yeltsin, winning. Yeltsin became the first president of the Russian Federation in 1992, but fearing another coup in the midst of the chaos and political instability of 1990's, Yeltsin ended up doing a lot of, let's say... "collaboration", with the ex-Soviet hardliners to keep them happy because he was afraid of getting couped himself.

This generally involved the "sale" of state assets and industries at dirt cheap prices to many of these hardliners, combined with your usual run-of-the-mill autocratic/oligarchic corruption. Now of course, Yeltsin and his cronies were heavily involved in corruption too, but one of the reasons Putin was chosen as Yeltsin's successor was both because of his connections to ex-Soviet hardliners as an ex-KGB agent AND because Putin was corrupt himself. It was a bit of an open secret that as then ~~mayor~~ head of the Committee for External Relations for the mayor of St. Petersburg in the early 90's, Putin stole an estimated $100 million from the city while it's citizens were on the brink of starvation.

So basically, Yeltsin's choice of Putin as his successor both satisfied his political opponents and provided insurance he would not be investigated for corruption after he left office.

Yes, you're right. Sobchok was the mayor at the time, not Putin. I'll edit the original comment to reflect that. But his role was not just as a front desk clerk; he was appointed to oversee and manage international investments to the city as well as its imports/exports. A position that obviously uniquely positioned him to engage in and profit off of corruption schemes.

Ex-KGB. The KGB no longer existed after the fall of the USSR but it's members still retained their connections and networks. The network of ex-Soviet hard-liners and ex-KGB agents probably couldn't coup the government, but they still had power and influence they could exert if Yeltsin didn't want to play nice with them. Yeltsin probably could've fought them and came out on top if he wanted, but he also knew he wouldn't be in power forever since Russia still had presidential term limits. His decision to capitulate ultimately was due to personal greed and cowardice, as he opted for appeasement over risking political chaos in a country that was already suffering heavily from a ton of domestic issues.

The military in 1990's Russia was sort of a mixed bag. Neither faction really had full control over them. In fact, one of the reasons why the 1991 Soviet coup attempt failed was because large portions of the military the hardliners used to seize control defected over to Yeltsin.

Are you crazy? He’s the epitome of a man who let himself go to the extreme. He was cute once for a short period when he was in his twenties, then during his thirties he had sort of a mild appeal for women who like guys who look more “attainable” with a “fatherly” look, and everything from there was a STEEP downward spiral into levels of sub5ness so great he would be a social outcast middle aged incel skulking through blackpill forums if he wasn’t as famous as he is. He’s borderline clinically obese, has the puffiest face I’ve ever seen, looks sixty in some pictures despite being in his forties last I remember, he is easily one of the ugliest A list actors alive today, and if any of the rumors about him are true I can only hope that his career one day comes to match his legendarily shitty looks.
