Do most women lie when they say they post on their IG only for their friends and themselves ?

Men use social media for the same thing as women do: validation ("hey look at me!") and identity-craft ("hey this is what I want to be associated with!"

I don't have personal social media, which is unusual for anybody my age, male or female. Every man I have dated has posted vacation photos, gym thirst traps, selfies, photos of themselves posing with a project or painting, showing off a new motorcycle, etc.

You notice when women do it because you notice women more generally, and your algorithm probably isn't actively throwing female gaze-oriented content at you.

EDIT: I forgot to address the main point of the post. When someone enters a relationship, they may post less content like this because their need for validation is being met offline or because their focus shifts from crafting a self-identity to focusing on their shared identity as a couple or family. Happens with men too. Fewer shirtless gym selfies, more dad joke memes.

I see no difference between how men and women behave in this, single people tend to make more posts because they are lonelier. They get in a relationship and go quiet. It doesn't mean they have to be making the posts to try to attract someone, I think most of them are just bored and lonely.

Generally speaking, when it comes to outfit and makeup pics, women are looking for compliments from other women. From friends yes, but if the profile is public, really from any woman. We know men generally don’t care about that stuff, it’s the body-focused pics that are more likely to be for male attention.

Men’s gym pics are often similar in this way, they might be more likely to want female attention than the other way around, but it will be mostly guys who follow accounts focused on men’s fitness.

As for why they might stop when in a relationship, it can be that their partner doesn’t like it, but it can also just be that they’re now more focused on the relationship. The same way that people sometimes stop having as much time for their friends.

It’s definitely different women posting for different reasons. When I was single I would usually post photos of me and my friends doing fun things and maybe post twice a week. I also would dress up cute for other women, if I wanted to dress for men id wear lingerie everywhere. It definitely seems like some young women are addicted to posting and I can’t tell you their motivation. I was never the type to post selfies though unless it was me and my dog on a hike sometimes.

I have 130 followers on Instagram, of which I all know personally. I have 3 photos up, and my profile is private. On the rare occasion when I post on my story, only my friends can see it. I've posted all my before and afters from the gym and weight loss in what could be considered revealing clothing (usually sports bras and biker shorts). If I wanted validation from random strangers I could set my profile to public or accept the 500 friend requests in my notifications. Not everyone posts publicly, and you'll never know because their profile is private. The attention whores get more visibility because they're posting for attention on public profiles.

I keep seeing posts from guys about how they expect their girlfriends to stop posting cute pics of themselves online when dating, so in some cases there may be external pressure as well?

(My insta is 92% pictures of my cats - especially when I'm fostering, since adorable pictures of fosters helps them find homes - 8% pictures of cool bugs, deer, mushrooms, and the view from my deck over the water, and less than 0.1% me. And that's an increase from when I was in my twenties, though obvs the social media available was fairly different then.)

From a monetary standpoint, I have less than 20k followers on Insta, and I know that pictures of my face and body trend more than a picture of my food. 🤷

So I post pictures of me not for the validation, the girls, or myself. I do it for the coin.

I post on my IG because of who I can reach. Post a pic or like theirs and boom the person I want dm’s me.🤷‍♀️ sometimes I just do it to see whose attention I can get like a game lol ….. it’s not that deep. Boredom strikes and there I go. Typically aim for high profile people but sometimes they follow my page without me doing anything.

If you’re single, IG is a way to keep in touch with certain men like a guy you talked to on tinder or a guy you have a crush on that you met in your life. Depending on age, some women use social media to meet a man. Selfies and cute pictures are a way to present yourself to family and friends as well as to potential dates in a tasteful fashion.

When you’re in a relationship, you don’t need to catch the eye of the guy you matched with on tinder or your gym crush.

There is nothing deceptive about this.
