I don't think it's an either/or thing. One can be good friends with a woman and respect her as a person and also be proud of the fact that she chose you as the person that she wants to have sex with. Treating women as only prizes that are won is what is objectifying.

I'm just going to do a platitude. As tiring as they are, I think this is a situation that calls for one.

Thinking of women simply as "prizes" is a dangerous way to be. It paves the way for nice-guy bullshit, and the mentality that you're entitled to have a person's time or space.

For a relationship to function in a healthy manner, both people have to want and appreciate each-other. It takes time, and bonding, and mutual understanding, not just a petty competition. Sure, there are shallow motivations for pursuing someone. And yeah, it's healthy to be proud of your partner.

But at the end of the day, prizes are things. People are complex, and relationships take work. The only "winning" to be had is making that other person happy.

This seems like a perspective that you have chosen to take, and not something that's true or false. You can think of a woman as something you need to earn, but remember that she also has to earn your approval too. You chose her just as much as she chose you.

Also, note that women certainly don't think of themselves as prizes or judges in a contest to decide the best male. It's a repulsive idea to me to be honest. Maybe it's a part of male nature to have this perspective, but I don't like it.

And men choose whom they pursue. Both the man and the woman make choices. They just happen at different points. Getting into a relationship or having a casual relationship isn't a prize because the existence of a prize implies that there is nothing more to be done in order to get what you want. In reality, once in a relationship, or in the event of a casual encounter, both parties put something into that interaction in order to make it better.

A better way to look at it is that a good relationship is a prize that you can only find once you are mentally in a place to have one, and only if you pursue the right individuals (as a man or as a woman). The hookup equivalent is similar. The only real difference is the type of effort expended and where that effort goes towards.

I also feel like feminism only makes this problem worse. Feminism, has made women's standards for looks go way up as of recently, thus giving women more power in the gate-keeping of sex by giving them more agency.

Well if girlfriends are prizes than shouldn't male-male friendships be prizes as well. Then it wouldn't be sexism, it'd just be the way men view relationships. And I think men do view male-male friendships as prizes to help boost their status.

Your partner signals your status, so in a way both men and women are like prizes and are often treated as such.

I mean it is like receiving a goldfish as a prize ain't it? The goldfish costs maybe 50 cents at Walmart and maybe another 5 cents for the baggie it is in, but needs a tank, a filter, food, a modicum of knowledge with regards to care and feeding, ultimately a very large tank and the space to put it in, lighting for the tank if you want it to look good, no extended periods of time without electricity to run that filter etc. And goldfish have been known to live 40 years.

Don't treat living things as prizes because it is a dumb way to go about life.

Well I think the best relationships happen when both people think they earned a prize. I wouldn't want a guy who didn't have high standards and didn't meet those standards himself- the guys I dated had the same perspective. We had to prove ourselves to each other.
