Shit tests are a common concept on TRP and many reds on here assume that blues accept them as well. But from reading about them, I find myself confused. 'Confused' being the nice way of saying it. I find them poorly defined, and when I see examples I don't see how they fit the definition. As a concept, I think it is defunct. But hey, maybe I'm missing a few key parts so clue me in if I'm overlooking something.

So, the definition of a shit test that I commonly see is that it is a means to gauge your social standing. They can be either questions or statements, but the purpose of them (intentionally or subconsciously) is to challenge you socially and see if you back down or not. The human equivalent of bears standing on hind legs and roaring. And I can accept this. I don't think that there is a section of our brain dedicated to making intentionally prying statements. That is, I don't think there is any intent, subconscious or otherwise, to test a person with a particular statement. But we are still social creatures and we judge each other socially. If a person is awkward or gives unsettling answers I will take note and distance myself. But why would my social instincts limit my reactions to just when I'm testing? No, every social interaction and every statement or question I make leads to a response from you which you will be judged on. The idea of a shit test is then defunct, because every social interaction is by that definition a shit test.

The sidebar claims that shit tests aren't just given by women to potential partners, but also within male groups. Which I agree, and I'd like to hear your rationale if you think otherwise. Men judge other men social abilities as well, constantly judging and analyzing. TRP is in large part about positive masculinity, and finding your masculine side, often within an exclusively male group. Why do we not hear more about navigating male shit tests to find your place in a male group, since it is an important part of culturing your masculine side?

Now, moving forward. The most baffling thing I've seen are the examples of shit tests. They so often seem to be amazing mundane things. And yes, you will be judged by your response. But very often they aren't even critical statements where we would expect a 'bad answer'. The definition of a shit test as I see it encompasses all human interactions. But suppose there is a line somewhere that separates some interactions from others.

Some examples from the sidebar

  • I bet you say that to all the girls

  • Haha Tom is one of those player guys, you can tell just by looking at him!

  • How many girls have you slept with?

All of these center around your exploits with other women and be somewhat provocative (at least compared to the more trivial stuff we'll see later). But then there are other claims

  • Do you have a girlfriend?

  • "Hold my bag for me!” or “Will you go and get me a coffee?”

  • I have a boyfriend!

Which are pretty fair questions. I'm particularly baffled by how they think the boyfriend/girlfriend statements should be handled (saying you have a girlfriend will make it more likely to hook up, and it doesn't matter if she has a boyfriend), but that is neither here nor there. Point is, those can be very genuine questions. But then they get even further removed.

  • What’s the matter? You look so sad (1).

  • I’m looking for someone who’s not afraid to wait (1).

  • This thread says a lack of sex is a shit test

  • "You're getting too big", in regards to hitting the gym (2)

  • What do you do for a living (3)

  • I'm not so keen [to have sex] sorry. Zero sex drive at the moment lol. (4)

I suppose that the idea of a shit test can be a mental tool you remind you that impressions count. And if that is all it is, fine, I have nothing to argue with. But I simply fail to see the rhyme and reason here. A shit test is an interaction where your social skills will be judged (all interactions), but the line seems arbitrary. If I tell my boyfriend that I don't want to have sex tonight because I have a headache, is that a shit test? If I say that he is cute (because he is cute), is that a shit test? If I playfully tease him that he is never allowed to have short hair, shit test? Bearing in mind, I want to see a shit test definition from your perspective. How do you know when she is shit testing versus speaking in simple English?
