BP and RPers seem to often make arguments based on premises that the other side doesn't agree to. For example, a red pill might make an argument that relies on all/most women being attracted to the RP alpha, and present this premise without evidence. The blue pill will then disagree with the premise, and typically the argument will dissolve, with nobody having learned anything.
This could potentially go the other way too. Maybe a blue pill will present an argument that relies on women having extremely varied preferences, and the red pill will disagree with that premise.
How do we fix this deadlock? Evidence, and vigilance. When one makes a post, he/she should evaluate it for all premises their argument relies on, make sure the other side will agree to that premise, and if not, present evidence or research supporting that premise.
This subreddit is a good thing, and it helps us learn about divergent points of view, but this is an improvement we need to make if it's going to get anywhere.

No, I'm not. You're completely missing the point. The argument isn't about whether hot women like short guys, it's about how redpillers tend to react to examples that contradict their claims. [Hint: dismiss them as outliers, which is exactly what you were going to do.]

No, not at all. A (good) study investigates a certain idea and tries to remove any outside influences. There's a big difference with personal experiences, where bias and confounding factors are not at all accounted for.

Hi OP, I'm writing this response to change your view. You say you are open-minded, so lets test that premise.
Imagine we do a research study with 100 participants. For example, lets say we present a dating profile, and then experimentally manipulate the n-count, such as 1, 5, 10, 20, etc. Our hypothesis would be at what point the n-count makes the person in the dating profile unappealing. Or, as another example, lets say we do a survey asking people about their opinions of n-count. So we do either an experiment, or a survey, which are the two basic forms of research.
Each participant is 1 data-point. And we collect those data points by collecting more and more participants.
How is that any different than people responding in this sub?
For example, someone posts a question or statement or issue. The commenters (participants) respond. Each person is a data-point. Now, its mostly qualitative responding (I'll grant you that), rather than quantitative, but you, as the reader, can look over the responses and get a sense of the results.
What I am arguing is that (1) yes, you are right, more "present evidence and research supporting that premise" would be nice. My job is social science research. I would love it if this sub, and all subs in existence, used more of it!, (2) but you have to also admit that the very act of posting/commenting is a type of research study, with the commenters as participants, each one a data-point, providing their opinions to survey questions, or providing their experiential life history as responses to experimental mechanisms.
Let me say it another way, in a more provocative way. Imagine a post stating that women tend to like bad boys over nice guys. The commenters respond. If the majority are drawing upon their life history to confirm the statement, isn't that de facto a research study supporting the premise?

You are right. Not representative. But the dirty secret of behavioral science is no sample is representative. And you might not believe it but PurplePillDebate is actually more representative than you might think. I'm happy to explain.
But first, on a larger note, there is no reason for being snarky ('go for the first time'). I honestly reached out to you for your opinion on another sub. If you don't want a civil discussion, let me know, and I'll move on to conversing with someone else.
Anyway, here is (an interesting?) explanation of representativeness:
AND that is why PurplePillDebate is actually slightly better than most social science research studies. On PPD you find a wider age range, background characteristics, personality types, financial situations, etc. Its not ideal. Just better than typical convenience sampling.
Now, do you see how being less snarky, and engaging in a nice civil conversation, allowed you to learn new information and perhaps gain a deeper perspective on things. That is why I like reddit. To share and learn.
Anyway, I'll respond to your other comments in a moment.

You bring up an interesting point.
Most 'real scientific studies' come from subject pools. That is selection bias. In its worst form. The people in subject pools are only those who: did well in high school, chose to go to college, choose a social science as their major, and then chose to do 'extra credit'. Pure self-selection.
Its one of the problems in the field.
PPD moves in a slightly better direction. You get a large age range. Larger range of demographics. Larger range of personalities. Larger range of financial situations. Larger range of political backgrounds. Larger range of life experiences.
Is there was a way to eliminate all 'selection bias', we would welcome it!
On a larger note, do you see how not jumping to conclusions (and going out of your way to give people an F :) allows you to learn more about this topic? One problem (IMO) about reddit is people going to extremes (you just didnt give a B or C or D, but an F!) without first critically thinking or learning from others.

Hi, umm, is that second paragraph sarcasm? I'm asking honestly. I don't always grasp these things with the written word (no non-verbals, etc). Sometimes people put that "/s" on the end to help clarify. Its hard to know sometimes. If it is sarcasm, then no worries, we can stop conversing. If not, I'm happy to keep talking.

Umm, I'm not sure what to do here.
I had a long discussion on this thread today with another commenter about the same issue. We came to the conclusion that there is no way to for me prove I'm an expert on this without revealing personal info, and I want to stay anonymous, obviously, this is reddit afterall. So the best I can say is that I've been doing this for years. I'm an expert on this very thing (not redpill, just social science in general, and this issue of 'subject pools' specifically). In fact, the reason I'm responding is the link you provided. I love it! I am tangentially related to that very research! And Nosek is right about 70%, and wrong about 30%, but I can't explain because you could then google my words I use here in this comment (to prove the 30%) and you would be able to identify me on google and I wouldn't be anonymous anymore.
You have no reason to believe me. I get it. No worries. But please for the love of God don't believe Nosek, at least 30% of it. Please. If you remember nothing else from our exchange, remember that. Nosek is 30% "bad science" as you put it, and its hurting our field tremendously because he wants fame and fortune.
Anyway, rant over :)
I know my blindsides, and Nosek is one of them, he gets my riled up. My students laugh about it in class.
Anyway, we started talking about your redpill ex. Thanks for sharing. It was informative!

As you wish.
To provide some context. We started off in bluepill sub, talking about redpill, and for that there is wiggle room, it can be subjective, etc. No worries. That is why I framed our conversation around me just asking you some questions. Informal and fun.
Then you moved over into an old PPD discussion, and accidentally stumbled upon something objective.
For example, you literally said: Reddit may be more representative than your typical classroom full of freshman. I don't know. But then, neither do you. But the answer is I do know. I am one of the people who figures that stuff out :) You literally stumbled upon one of the very people who does that exact thing, which is why I was responding in the PPD about the OPs comment about research studies.
In other words, if you want to go back to the subjective interpretation of red/bluepill, no worries, but now you in a different world altogether, and I'm putting on my 'teacher' hat to help you. I am truly, honestly, for the love of all that is holy, trying to help you.
In my dept I am the one faculty turn to when they have questions about stats and methods. Think back to what I said, about how subject pools are not representative and why, and then PPD is more representative and why, and how we can't do the impossible stuff like true representative, etc. There is nothing controversial about that. Please, I am begging you, for once on reddit I need to know there is a glimmer of hope and people can actually take some advice (from an expert!), otherwise this experiment we call reddit is failing.
Let me say it one more way: You said your clients are researchers and professors who don't understand stuff. Perhaps you read my post, got reactive, and projected your daily struggles on to me. Go back and look at what I said. Its pretty straightforward.
And then, even if you can't do that, even if you can't admit anything to a stranger on the internet, please think critically about Nosek. Please. I am begging you. Its my pet-peeve. The way he is distorting the truth for his own fame and fortune. He is 70% right, and the field needs that 70%, which is why we have to put up with him, but that last 30% that is wrong is killing me. Its really killing me. And its killing the field. He gets the press, so people like you read about it, and get the less-than-full-picture. There is a lot of criticism of him out there. But it doesn't get the press. So no one knows. And the field is tremendously hurt by it.

'I' didn't. I'm not the reddit guy. I tried being the 'mTurk' guy but bunch of people beat me to that one as well. I was pissed. I'm just 'one of those people' who figures this kind of stuff out, is how I phrased in the last comment. I'm not going to give away what I do. I value anonymity more than you can realize. Why? (well, see later below).
Also, remember, its not that reddit "is representative", just more so than subject pool. But its a QUANTUM leap forward. In the beginning there were only subject pools. (Argh). Then Facebook came along and you could advertise cheaply for large number of subjects... then it became too expensive. Then mTurk came along and it was like heaven (!) because it so cheap and easy... but its slowly becoming more expensive. So most people are back to subject pools. (NOW, if you have money, that changes everything. I had a grant early in my career and i remember paying 7.66 per subject to a company that does 'representative sampling', and I got the subject for an entire HOUR, which was unheard of, and I published a bunch, in top journals, it was heaven, but alas the grant dried up).
So now we have reddit. The 5th most visited website in the US (!), the 17th most visited in the world (!). DIRECT ACCESS TO PEOPLE. There are only a few types of research designs (case study, survey, experiment, etc) and with reddit you can directly access MILLIONS of people that were otherwise INACCESSIBLE. You can do case studies, surveys, and hopefully one day even ecologically valid experiments (a pipe dream, but a man can dream). So many people. So much data. So much information. We are only beginning to understanding how to weaponize reddit for research purposes. The future is bright.
So I am on here now to learn. I lurk. I ask questions. But I want (need?) to be anonymous. And, to be clear, I'm not collecting data right now. If people thought I was studying them, they would close up. I am just lurking and poking around. Trying to understand people. For example, you were very informative about how lies can drown a redpill relationship. A perspective I did not have until I met you. Thank you.
Since we are winding this up, can I offer a suggestion. You are well-spoken, and have an interesting perspective. What if you shared it on redpill or purplepill. If you clarified up front you are not trying to hurt anyone but just wanted to share a perspective, I think people would respond well. Obviously a few jerks in every crowd, but that is mostly because they feel like their back is against the wall. Redpill sometimes does 'field reports'. As a twist, you could report your own 'field report' but from the female perspective. Or go on purplepill and just share. Posts on PPD that are antagonistic get that in return, but if you simply wanted to share your experience without trying to put anyones back up against the wall I think the response would be equally open.
