Most people listen to rap for the rhythm and energy and sounds and the delivery, not the words meanings.

If Nicki Minaj said half the things rappers say about women, but to men, I would find it hard to listen to her music. When it comes to misogyny in rap/hip hop there's actually a pretty simple explanation:

Women's fear of being labeled racist for criticizing black people is bigger than their dislike of misogynistic lyrics.

Good proof of this point was Action Bronson being protested and banned from Toronto due to his misogynistic lyrics back in like 2016 (on the same bill Tyga was playing). When the rapper in question is white suddenly the feminists care about misogyny and offensive lyrics again.

Protesting Robin Thicke and not TI on blurred lines is another clear example as well.

Lyrics can be subjective and up to the individual interpretation of whoever is listening to them I’m a woman and I like the song and that particular line you mentioned of “Never need a bitch I’m what a bitch needs” simply means to me that I don’t need irrelevant people in my life. The bitch in that context for me was any man or woman that I did not need to deal with but in fact would need to deal with me. However even though I do like the song there are other lines that I did have some minor issues with.

There seems to be confusion in these comments about What Feminists Think. There are ’liberal feminist’ women, the soft sexpozzie “choice feminists” men are okay with that are about slut walks, no slut shaming, glamorizing stripping, BDSM and declare that whatever a woman chooses, it’s feminist. They aren’t concerned with making any great changes or seeing the radical origin of women’s problems, that men want to control women, and addressing it- they are just trying to survive and be approved of for surviving. Radical feminism is often called ‘white feminism’ and this is the housewife feminism Betty Friedan wrote about. Lower class women were just trying to get married and be supported and thought complaining that you don’t have hobbies or a career outside housewifery was privileged, and feminists began to address ideas of race, economic class and sex.

If rap was around in the segregated 50’s, it would be called ‘race music.’ Yesterday’s sexually charged ’rock and roll’ (fuck music) is today’s rapping about pimping and murder and kids love it because it’s rebellious and antisocial and your parents hate it.

There’s also an ironic distance from a lot of the content. It’s okay for a non-feminist awakened women of privilege for men and the culture to be sexist as long as it doesn’t affect them. If you laugh along with the misogyny it defuses the power of it, you’re protected from it because you’re participating by identifying with the sexist subject instead of the subjugated object.

When raunchy female rappers rose up as subjective voices in the 00’s (Foxy, Kim) men were still writing most of their lyrics and the sexism ingrained was a liberal feminist value set. Women embracing the hoe life, getting thug types hard and basically embodying the racist porn trope of black women being ‘bitches’ - insatiable dogs in heat with their butts out for a dick. Radical feminists understand that sexual power is meaningless without social and economic power. They ask “Are the ones in power doing x [stripping or otherwise sticking their asses out for dick and money]? Then it’s not feminist.“ And it’s not to put other women down, because they understand the cultural pressure to conform to this dynamic created by economic and social inequality, which is expressed in rap. Women aren’t born radical though and basically are born into a system where it benefits them as individuals to align themselves with those in power- men- for approval.
