The moment I realized I was making fun of a woman because I was more sexually desirable to MEN than she was, was the moment everything clicked and I became FDS. Now I'm here to stick with my fellow Queens, helping them blossom instead or putting them down.

My feelings about britney have provided me so much insight about a) the way the media can influence how we think, especially as teens. I totally jumped on the "lol, Britney is crazy white trash" bandwagon when I was younger. And b) the way the sexualisation of young girls is normalized.
Britney came out when I was around 9-10. To me she looked grown up. I obviously never questioned why a teenager of 16 was dancing in a sexually suggestive way on TV (go back and watch 'Baby one More Time' the whole thing is a sex dance). In fact, I wanted to be just like her. Then in 2007 the media absolutely trashed her and all my non-critical teenage brain could think was, "yeah, what a crazy bitch."
Now, looking at it I realized she was essentially raped by the media and by the consumers of the 'product' that is britney. She talked in a sweet little baby voice while acting overtly sexual. So naturally, our culture assumed she was ours for the taking.
During the head shaving incident someone asked her, "why are you doing this?" and she responded, "I'm tired of everyone touching me." That says it all.

That's gross. And I guess she was expected to be like, "Teehee, no thank you." That's why I think the head shaving was badass. It was a huge fuck you to the world, like "you don't own me."

britney's conservatorship and the controversy surrounding it is absolutely heart-breaking. her father has threatened to have her children taken away if she attempts to leave the conservatorship, she's been held against her will in mental health facilities, and forced to continue to make music and perform in physically demanding concerts in order to make more money for her family, specifically her father.
i read somewhere that when britney is filming a music video, the only direction she gives the team producing it is to film her in a cage. because that's what her life is... a cage. one of the most prolific, successful, beautiful, and iconic women of our time isn't even free to make her own decisions.

I’ve always felt bad for Monica Lewinski. She was a young single girl and the president of the United States was all up in her business. I’m sure it was thrilling and exciting, especially when he was giving her presents. Then she gets ratted out by a “friend,” a media storm ensues, and in the end, married Clinton is forgiven and she is forever vilified. Really disgusting.

Same. I always thought how awful it would be if I was judged by the bad decisions I made in my early 20's. She's very smart, and I want good things for her.

I never understood why SHE was the bad one, though. It’s so easy to be manipulated at that age by someone who is very powerful. But no one ever granted her even a tiny speck of understanding.

Female humans are always the ones the media tries to hold accountable for men's actions.
All of the reporting referring to Epstein & co.'s victims as "underaged women" was one of the most disgusting examples in recent memory. They very deliberately want you to read "women" and subconsciously think of a person with agency, rather than the blatant reality of the situation. You know women, those wily temptresses!
There is, by definition, no such thing as an "underaged woman." It's a fucking oxymoron. The word is CHILD. You are talking about a CHILD. CHILDREN. AREN'T. WOMEN!

Look at Britney Spears compared to Justin Timberlake. They started out on the same show. They both had successful music careers. Their lives ran parallel to each other for a very long time.
And yet look at how things turned out for Britney. She would be at the same level of success and happiness had the media not continually hounded her and torn her down simply for being what she was forced to be by her parents (who have a lot to answer for imo) and record companies. Britney and Justin are yet another case in point of the lack of equality in media representation when it comes to gender. It's a fucking tragedy.
[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Justin Timberlake was “sexualized” by teen girls who wanted to know what he ate for breakfast.
Britney Spears was sexualized and objectified by millions of grown men.

about the kesha thing, she was actually forced to preform and sing a lot of those songs by her producer who was sexually assaulting her. an example is die young, which came out shortly after the sandy hook shooting. Yep. She didn't even "want to make party music." She was forced into that persona by her record label and producer/rapist Dr. Luke as they thought that image was more "marketable" than the folk/country songs she had written. The guy essentially terrorized her into an eating disorder, which she went to rehab for. He brutalized her for years and effectively ruined her career because she wouldn't go along with it anymore. The whole situation is unbelievably fucked.

I feel sorry for Brandy who had to LIE about being married to her LVM boyfriend when she mistakenly got pregnant by him when she was a teen pop star idol.
She was even forced into the MTV reality show “Brandy Special Delivery”, to document the entire process.
Her career never recovered after she touched LVM.
“Brandy: I said that I was married. Because at that time being pregnant out of wedlock was not a trend. It was not something that people praised. It was a sin. And I felt like I could not be honest about that. I felt the pressure of, again, having to be perfect. And I was scared. I thought that everything that I had worked hard for and everything that I worked to build, the image that I worked so hard to build was threatened. And I felt like having a child out of wedlock would ruin my career, everything that I had built.”

Megan Fox especially - which is why I literally CANT with LibFems today. They totally acted like awkward unattractive girls hating on a girl just because she’s pretty despite their claims of being “sex positive”and supportive of women and completely ignored the fact that Megan Fox was sexually harassed by Michael bay starting at 15. They pick and choose which women they support all the time.
[–]CeriseNoireFDS Newbie32 points33 points34 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The Megan Fox thing is so real. She's been through a lot with shitty producers and all kinds of sleazy trash in Hollywood. Marketing her the way they did and then making up stories about her so that naive women wouldn't have her back either. I think she'd have more luck today than she did back then. We're still in pickme hell, but a lot of women have woken up and there is some shift after metoo even though it's minimal when you consider the cesspool it all is.
All in all. Jennifer's Body is a fucking cult classic. People did not know how to appreciate it when it came out. This PSA still kills me🤣

What's Mary-Sue?
[–]MaisiebrFDS Newbie48 points49 points50 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
A hollow main character you can project yourself onto and feel like the story happens to you, or sometimes a blatantly obvious self-insertion by the writers themselves (the character resembles them). The story around the Mary Sue is usually emotionally rewarding - the cool guy likes her, even multiple guys pursue her at the same time, she goes somewhere really nice, she becomes a hero, a chosen one, or anything else you can imagine. Bella from Twilight is a frequently used example.
[–]imaginaryrefuge28 points29 points30 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
If this is what it means now, this has changed from when I first heard the term used. Back in the early 2000s, it meant (at least in the communities I ran with, and fanfiction communities I was part of) a massively overpowered character with no flaws (or if they did have flaws, they were ones that weren't actually flaws at all, at least not truly) or flaws that somehow never amounted to harming the character, who had some horribly traumatic backstory. To me, the most famous Mary Sue (or in this case, Marty Stu) is Harry Potter.
[–]MaisiebrFDS Newbie3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You're right. I think it has been associated with imagining yourself in the shoes of them, or a writer obviously writing about themselves experiencing things later, because some writers (and even fanfiction writers) did the things I mentioned while also writing their main character in a Mary Sue way so I (and others) might have linked the two things together.
[–]rinabeanFDS Disciple0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
In the early 2000s it was still about making fun of teenage girls' self insert characters in eg Harry Potter fanfic that they never really intended for adults to read.
I know because I was one of the teenage girls pretending I was better than them for being too ashamed to post my own fic!
Maybe you were in a very very nice community. But the cringe culture reigned supreme across every community I knew. And despite the name "Marty Stu", no-one ever actually used it, and no-one actually accused Harry Potter of being an example at the time.

A fictional character that is seemingly flawless, who can do no wrong, never makes mistakes and is typically female. Some people believe Rey from Star Wars and Bella Swan from Twilight are mary-sues
[–]kwallioFDS Newbie10 points11 points12 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Honestly most people who talk about mary-sue's think every female character is a mary-sue. The mary-sue thing comes from fanfiction and is typically an auther self-insert character, virtually perfect in every way. While I agree that most female protagonists have their issues I haven't seen any *real* mary-sue's in major films. Because it would be completely implausible.
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I get really angry about the Rey thing though. She makes plenty of mistakes throughout the trilogy. Luke is arguably a much more unrealistically good guy than she is. But why don’t we have a special name for ragging on male characters who are flawless heroes and hate media that has these types of characters? Oh right, they are men, men are supposed to be heroic heroes. See also: Edward Cullen. Harry Potter. Frodo. Gandalf. Batman. I could go on....
[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's like playing an RPG with God mode on. There's no tension, no character development & no joy. Mary Sue characters are Pickmesha fantasies.
It's lazy writing for female characters. They can be shoehorned into any storyline because they aren't individual/nuanced enough to matter.

Kristen Stewart is definitely still dumb for having an affair with a married man. Anyone who knowingly signs up to be a side piece is an idiot. ETA: she was already famous and admittedly called it (the affair) exciting. So I don’t see it as an imbalance of power like with Clinton and Lewinsky.
[–]BitthenthoFDS Newbie2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Absolutely. Cheating is not a “mistake” no matter the gender. Instead of using the weak “she/he is young” excuse let’s just hold people accountable for their actions.
[–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I don't think like making a mistake makes you dumb. Dumb is a level of intelligence and even smart people make mistakes. If you make those same mistakes all the time and have no self-awareness about it, that makes you dumb.

Though I didn’t do almost any of this I don’t apologize for the ones I did do. Kristen Stewart was and still is the WORST. She compared the Hollywood red carpet to being raped then admitted she had never been raped to know. After all those harsh words she cheated on her boyfriend to get the role in Snow White by sleeping with the director. I used to hate pink for it being used to put young ladies in a category.
[–]nocturnalisFDS Newbie18 points19 points20 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
What’s worst about the rape comment is her first big role was in Speak, an adaption of a popular YA novel about a sexual assault victim. She started dating the guy who played her boyfriend in that movie and allegedly cheated on him with Robert Pattinson. Years ago, someone made a list of people she has dated and pointed out that she cheats on everyone she has dated, both man and woman. I guess she’s the monkey-bar type.
