I hope what I’m about to say isn’t too controversial. I am sharing based on my own personal experience and observations.

This is open for discussion! How would you react?

It has been my experience that if a man you are dating says he was abused (physically, emotionally, verbally) in a past relationship it is a RED FLAG.

I will explain why.

As a woman I have a lot of empathy for anyone who has been abused in a relationship.

Sadly, like many women this empathy stems in part from first person experience.

I was never able to question such a claim coming from anyone and always believed it.

Can and do men get abused by their female partners? Of course! Unhealthy people exist among both genders. I have seen situations where this was the case.

BUT the RED FLAG here is composed on the basis that:

A. Why is he telling you this in the early dating stages?

B. What does he REALLY mean?

He is telling you something to elicit your PITY.

That is a classic manipulation tactic to make you bond with him very fast. It is also asking you to share your own wounds before real trust and intimacy has been established.

Common phrases yo would hear:

"I’m a sensitive guy”.

Translation: Whenever you have standards or boundaries I would become hurt and wounded and you would spend all your energy trying to make me feel better so I would even talk to you about what went wrong. By the time you make me trust you again you would forget what your standards were.

“I have trust issues”

Translation: I would claim I have a hard time doing minimal things because I was taken advantage of in the past. I would tell you are different and special unlike that other evil ex-girlfriend.

“She hit me”

I leave this one to your translation.

"She cheated on me"

I am sure there are many others!
