Reading the book Not Nice was helpful for me.

I'm a very kind person. But... I'm not very nice. Very few people deserve our kindness aka our emotional labour (empathy, consideration etc that make up kindness).

Nice is Kind's flakier, surface-level only, saccharine cousin. And the other comments saying that if someone describes themselves as nice, that's a big fat crimson flag.

I won’t paint everyone with this brush, but I recently heard someone say that West Coasters are nice but not kind, and East Coasters are kind but not nice. That the West Coaster will sympathize with you over your car running out of gas but leave you to call AAA, while the East Coaster will tell you how stupid you are to forget to fill up while giving you a ride where you need to go.

By the way, the origin of the phrase came from a quote about baseball.

"The nice guys are all over there, in seventh place." (6 July 1946),[18][20] about the 1946 New York Giants – seventh place was actually second-to-last place in the National League.

Durocher's remark was specific to the context of baseball, and indeed to the context of that set of players, rather than intended as generally applicable to male/female relationship dynamics or in any other context and his allegation of a cause-and-effect relationship between being nice and finishing last was at most merely implicit – it can also be interpreted as "Nice guys, but they will finish last", rather than "all nice guys finish last".

Nice people finish last. Niceness is something people do because they want to please others to gain something in return. Nice guy is nice because he wants sex. The nice girl is nice because she thinks she’ll get rewarded for her kindness. The nice girl isn’t as sinister like the nice guy but both lose in the end because nice people aren’t genuine.
