This quote struck me:

"Male friendships used to be considered lacking in many of the qualities seen in close female friendships, particularly emotional and physical intimacy.

But this has changed in recent years, the study found, with young men ‘openly pronounce love’ to their male friends in a way that would be socially prohibited in previous years, partly out of fear of appearing gay."

My male friends and I were always physically intimate; if you count jostling, playful wrestling and other affectionate aggressions (play-fighting: apparently it's adorable when kittens and puppies do it, but with young boys it is 'wrong') and there was always a strong emotional bond.

It may have been 'considered lacking' because no one bothered to note the massive differences between play fighting and bullying; between affectionate humor and mockery. But I don't think that it has appeared 'magically' in recent years. Friendships are intimate and private. You don't need to annouce it to the rest of the universe for it to be real. It's great that people can, but that doesn't improve or diminish the connection.

[–]sexyjeremypharoahwiz 33 points34 points35 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly! I've been calling my friends faggots and punching them in the arm for over 30 years!

[–]ifihadasister 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To help convince someone play fighting is good just look at how cats and dogs play fight. There's no harm. It helps development and bonding and social skills. Conflict for the purpose of learning conflict resolution or prevention is virtuous.

[–]CreeperCooper 30 points31 points32 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Good! I tell my "bro's" I love them, I let them know I'm there if they need to talk, etc. Build that support structure for the important people in your life!

EDIT: And don't let anyone tell you different. Saying you love your best friend is not even close to gay, it's being a functional human being with functional relationships.

[–]Elvick 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

EDIT: And don't let anyone tell you different. Saying you love your best friend is not even close to gay

I feel like anyone that legitimately has this concern, is suppressing some at minimum bi-curiosity. How is caring about a friend related to sexuality at all? It isn't. A knee jerk "no homo" attitude to normal, non-sexual/romantic things is the gayest thing you could ever do.

[–]Ordinate1 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I never said I didn't have an emotional connection; I still have an emotional connection.

That doesn't make it "rewarding," though.

[–]azazelcrowley 170 points171 points172 points 8 years ago* (25 children) | Copy Link

So the study found that men are comfortable talking emotionally with other men, but not women.

And this is the mens fault, rather than a learned behavior after realizing women are for the most part, hostile to men not basing their interactions with women around womens needs and interests, those women having been encouraged to think this way by both feminism and gynocentric traditionalism.

Kay, if you're gonna act like an ostrich, not much we can do about it.

But even still, it does somewhat poke a hole in the "It's because men don't talk about their issues" stuff. Hey, apparently men run everything, and men DO talk about their issues... to other men. And yet shit doesn't change. How curious. Seems like your "logic" has a hole in it somewhere.

[–]TheTyke 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm confused by what you mean by Ostrich.

Is this a slang thing?

[–]ArsikVek 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I would assume it's intended to reference the "head in the sand" behavior in that attitude.

[–]logician9000 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's not a learned behaviour. It's normal. Not talking about your feelings with close male friends and baring your soul to your wife are the learned behaviours.

[+]ChitotheChai -9 points-8 points-7 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

A lot less than what most people make it out to be and it's nowhere near the level of systematic misandry that's ingrained into most of our society.

well we do live in a patriarchy, and it’s men who have enforced society’s rules regarding gender roles. so...

[–]lasciate 46 points47 points48 points 8 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Who has more control over your personality: your Senator or your mother? Who is reinforcing the social rules?

Why is prostitution illegal? Because "the patriarchy hurts men, too"?

[+]Katriel13 -52 points-51 points-50 points 8 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

you missed the point: men shouldn’t blame anyone but men for men not being allowed to express their emotions.

[–]azazelcrowley 30 points31 points32 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

But men are allowed, other men react positively to it. Just not women. So whose enforcing what now?

Consider, the woman is the only participant that has to change her behavior to change the dynamic. She possesses a veto on the circumstances, regardless of how many men tell her to act otherwise, but women elect not to use it. Even if men all were fine with showing eachother emotions but pretended otherwise when women were around and demanded that women act negatively to men doing so, which is essentially your ridiculous assertion made up to deflect blame and culpability away from women for their own actions and behaviors, it's only womens behavior that allows the situation to continue. Ultimately, they possess the power to make or break the situation, not men.

Also note, these men, right here, are telling you precisely the opposite. And you're reacting sarcastically and in a hostile manner to it. You serve as a data point against your own bollocks.

As for "Patriarchy", right.

Just like because most leaders of the MRM are women, it's a gynocracy, and all its suggestions are inherently anti-male. Spare us your bullshit pseudo-worldview made up to cloak your hatred.

Go ahead and just recite some more excuses you've been provided with to avoid ever becoming a better person, it's worked out so well for you girls thus far, I doubt you've got anything better available to you.

[–]DaeusPater 22 points23 points24 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

a feminist blaming men again, anybody surprised?

[–]lasciate 30 points31 points32 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

The point was that men don't determine women's lives to the extent feminists think they do. In fact, women are more impactful in developing a person's (man and woman) personality than men are.

But if men's problems are men's fault (despite the OP and the article implying the opposite...), whose fault are women's problems?

[+]Katriel13 -30 points-29 points-28 points 8 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

again, it’s men who have enforced society’s rules regarding gender roles. please get it this time.

[–]lasciate 26 points27 points28 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I get that you can say "it’s men who have enforced society’s rules regarding gender roles. That doesn't make it true.

I asked you to consider, even for a second, whether women are human beings with a significant impact on society or the world or if they are impotent cows utterly at the mercy of men. Your failure to answer that question is an answer in itself.

[–]tmone 11 points12 points13 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're trapped and beat. Lol.

You can't answer any of their questions.

[–]goodbeertimes 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You need to pull your head out of your whatever, or whereever it is. Regardless of what you have read in your gender studies class, your idea of society is ill defined.

Society is NEVER built - either by men in past nor by feminists like you who are now trying to social engineer. Society is a negotiated contract between an individual and people around him (yes, I don't give a fuck about being gender neutral) when they are acting in their own self interest. The idea that men have made rules for other men and women to follow is feminist Scientology. The sooner you realise it, the better it will be for you.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.NOT

[–]DaeusPater 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

which men? I want names!

[–]AloysiusC 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

On the contrary, mate selection pressure is greater on men than it is on women. That means that gender roles are more a result of female decision making than male.

It's supremely unjust to blame men for women's choices. You seriously need to rethink your attitude.

[–]girlwriteswhat 9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

you missed the point: men shouldn’t blame anyone but men for men not being allowed to express their emotions.

So basically, men are expressing their emotions to other men and feel judged and at risk of rejection when they express them to women, but it's men who are to blame for men not being allowed to express their emotions?

Start 16 minutes in: https://www.ted.com/talks/brene_brown_listening_to_shame#t-947861

[–]Jammersault 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You are missing the point. It's not even about blaming anyone, men aren't playing the blame game either. Men are just discovering that they in fact do express their emotions in their own way and it's becoming more obvious to men that they gain more of certain kinds of emotional support from fellow men than they do from the women in their lives. You're short statement actually goes some way to proving what the actual point is to by the way

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Since the only mainstream gender hate is directed by feminists upon men and there isn't anything even remotely similar in the outgroup bias by men in the opposite direction, you're obviously a pretty shitty historian.

it’s men who have enforced society’s rules regarding gender roles

That's one of the most idiotic things I've heard in a while and it's funny that you based your entire ideology on the premise that it is men who enforce gender roles on other men. This very article demonstrates the complete opposite. Women predominantly enforce gender roles on men, because everything about men's live's revolves around the pursuit of love, sex and companionship from women(at least for 95% of men who are heterosexual). Our entire society, and every society, is built on this pursuit.

Men don't care about what other men say regarding gender roles. There are no incentives for men to care about what other men say, and men are generally a lot more tolerant of other men than women are of men. When men say they can't be weak or cry, it's because women tell them them they are not real men, worthy of love, sex or relationships, if they are weak or cry. When men say that they can't speak about their problems, it's because women will treat them as illegitimate when they do. When men are told they are worthy less because they are too short, that is women enforcing gender roles onto them in a very real way. These are tangible and real consequences that every heretosexual man experiences from women in their lives as they grow up.

And what's worse about this idea that it's men who are enforcing gender roles is that any man who would ever even attempt to tell a woman what type of woman she would be would be immediately shunned as a misogynist. When women enforce gender roles on men, however, no one dares to question them because that would also be perceived as misogynistic or a hopeless pursuit.

When men tell each other not to cry or haze each other over it, it typically comes from a place of empathy and concern. It's men telling other men "if you don't stop, women will hold it against you and it will only harm you further".

Throughout my life I always felt that the perfect relationship was with a guy and if it weren't for the sex I would just be gay. I hate trying to read minds and find hidden meanings in everything. I also wish that we didnt have to be mind readers or possessing of a natural intuition and charm that most of the population will not inherently possess in order to effectively communicate with women.

I dont really understand why they cannot be direct and obvious with what they want. Well, I guess I may have an idea, they have to protect themselves to the detriment of others whilst men are expected to open themselves up to any and all forms of rejection, from heart breaking 'nos' when proposing to ridicule and shaming when youre 'not good enough'.

God forbid that women have to face that too.

[–]logician9000 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

honestly, no surprise there

Women have a hard time staying friends with each other-men don't

So it only makes sense that men would also have a harder time keeping a close bond with a woman as opposed to how close his bond would be with a man.

Men don't piss each other off on purpose, women do.

Not being annoyed by the other person is huge

You have to remember that outside of averages, individuals exist. My boyfriend's best friend recently told him to never contact him again over a fucking video game. He has issues and we're getting sick of his shit, but he's been my boyfriend's best friend since 2nd grade and I've been comforting him through this.

Edit: The game was Gmod. Dark RP to be exact :/

[–]theAnalepticAlzabo 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Do you think hes gonna cool down and patch things up?

Also - and feel free to tell me to piss off if the question offends - did/do you ever feel threatened by you BF's friendship? Just curious.

[–]LeaChan 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No, every single time hes mad at anybody because contact with them for several months and we're getting really sick of it. In fact we literally just patched things up a couple weeks ago from him not speaking to us for a few months just because we tried to help him out when his sister passed away and it "annoyed him"?

And no I've never felt threatened by him, When hes not angry use a super cool guy and we really enjoy hanging out with him. I've even let him spend several nights at our house before. (We're college kids these things happen)

The problem is that when he gets mad he gets WAY too mad and won't speak to anybody for weeks or even months sometimes. Before my boyfriend and I were even dating he cut my boyfriend off for months because my boyfriend left a sleepover they were at because he wasn't feeling good.

We even had plans to all hang out for Halloween, which is why him cutting us out this time pissed us off to the breaking point.

[–]Elvick 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sounds like the issue is the person, not the game. From your other comments it's an ongoing issue with this guy. I assume it's not all about this game that he freaks out anyway.

Maybe he's bipolar or something.

[+]Islam-Delenda-Est -23 points-22 points-21 points 8 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

OP was talking about men, not boys. I know it is a meme at this point, but guys who are addicted to video games and take them seriously are very childish no matter what their physical age is.

[–]Cryhavok101 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

On the other hand, people who use the excuse "it's only a game" to shit all over another person, aren't really people at all.

[–]LeaChan 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

YES FUCK THAT SHIT. Also if they fuck your shit up "it's just a game" but if you fuck their shit up then "you're an asshole".

[–]SaiHottari 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I see this far less than game addiction. I love Skyrim and FO4, and play any chance I get. I don't get pissy with people that interrupt my gaming session because it is just a game.

[–]Cryhavok101 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Oh, I'd agree that it is less common, but I am also related to people who think they can treat someone poorly, specifically because games shouldn't matter to people.

[–]SaiHottari 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah, I'm not cool with mistreating people over their hobbies. I'm just saying that, as much as a game is a lot of fun and a good way to escape for a while, it's pretty low on the list of important things in life.

[–]Cryhavok101 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

On that we agree!

Personally though, when I do come across someone who does mistreat people over their hobbies, they end up lower priority than the hobbies. Most other people and actually important things in life are higher priorities though.

I really hope that people like that love sports. Then I can just come over to their houses, just waiting until a close game starts brewing. Seconds left on the clock, the ball is moving across the field... and I turn the television off. It's just a game.

Hes not addicted to them, he just has serious anger issues in general. He does this over everything. I already told the story twice in this thread but he once cut off my boyfriend for months because my boyfriend left a sleepover they were out because he wasn't feeling good.

[+]mybloodcansing1 points 8 years ago [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

My boyfriend's ...

If your boyfriend had bromance with this friend, I think it ended when you came into the picture. The friend's reaction could be a reaction to you more than a game. In any case, I believe a 'bromance' is more than a long term friendship.

[–]LeaChan 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

No. Not at all. I haven't interfered at all with their friendship. They were still hanging out nearly every day, I have even let him stay the night with us (my boyfriend and I live together) more times than I can count. We all worked at the same warehouse for a while. Said friend and I even hungout alone a few times.

I wasn't even playing the game with them when it happened. Apparently their base got raided because of poor communication and his friend told him to never contact him again, the thing is that this is always been his go to. Every single time he's ever mad at anybody he cuts contact with them for a few months. He did it to my boyfriend before I even started dating him, Once cutting contact for months because my boyfriend left a sleepover because he wasn't feeling good. Friend has trouble keeping friends because of this, always has.

So because of this my boyfriend pointed out that is extremely immature of him to cut people off every single time he's mad, and this made him ridiculously upset and he ended up telling my boyfriend to drop dead. Last I heard he moved in with his mom a state away and hasn't spoken to anyone where I live since.

The bigger issue here is why was your boyfriend besties with this cunt in the first place? What dysfunction inside him made him reward such terrible behaviour? And how might this aspect of your boyfriend's personality be affecting your relationship?

[–]LeaChan 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's not just my boyfriend, we both always give the friend second chances because he's really fun to hang out with when he's not angry, we have so much in common and we have a lot of good memories. But we're done now, this was the final straw.

Most of the conversations I have with women are about themselves and if I say something they don't agree with anything could happen, not speak to me for a week/tell everyone I'm a dickhead/accuse me of rape

I have a disagreement with a man and we argue it out and after the arument is done and it doesn't affect how we treat each other. I've argued with men at work and voices have been raised, the women start looking over/at each other, get giddy because there's some drama and them within 15 seconds we're back to talking about football. You see the cogs turning in their heads, confused look on there faces as they tried to figure out why we aren't pulling each other hair or some shit.

Gee I wonder why we prefer male friends than female.

[–]sexyjeremypharoahwiz 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Indeed. You yell at each other, maybe swap some fists, then grab a beer and a grilled cheese and you're friends again. Try that with a girl. She'll never speak to you again at best and at worst you wind up in jail.

A friend I had as a kid lived next door, and one day we were playing in my backyard and climbing trees or something. We ended up fighting and punching each other (he gave me a better black eye, I'm a pussy~)

We apologized to each other after we cooled off, obviously with our parents facilitating as we were in grade school. But things went back to normal almost instantly, I had a black eye and we were hanging out like it wasn't even there.

Guy friends are chill.

That about the arguments at work is a great example. I've seen it happen. Almost shouting matches were people showed up from nearby rooms to check on "What the heck going on" and within minutes of resolving the issue back to shooting the shit because it's done.
It even confused me the first time I saw that happen.

for this to have any significance, we have to ask woman too, as a control group. If woman feel the same about marriages and female friends the problem are not the women, but the marriage institution itself.

[–]theAnalepticAlzabo 40 points41 points42 points 8 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

Well, I mean, duh.

Your friend knows who you are, values you for your good qualities and forgives you for your bad ones. You don't have to spend money on him: your presence in his life adds to it. If you get into a really bad fight, you duke it out and are friends again.

Women have been trained since birth to hold contempt for men and boys, and all share in the 'secret' (if something blared from loudspeakers every night like a mosque's call to prayer can be considered 'secret') that women are better than men in every way, and deserve the best in life for no other reason than her vagina.

She has already had sex with men far more attractive than you, so she regards her marriage to you as a sign of her personal failure. Your only value to her is what you can do for her: she could give a shit about whats inside you (unless its something that could get her money). Actually, i'm wrong - women are actively disgusted by any reveal of emotion by her man. Hes supposed to bottle it up, dontcha know.

The only thing most (not all) have to offer in exchange for that hell is..... Well, sex.

[–]sexyjeremypharoahwiz 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not all women, but some definitely do treat men like this and that's the kind of woman championed by modern feminism. Bad behavior should be shamed, not encouraged. A guy who views his wife as a moist hole or a punching bag should be condemned just as much as a woman who views her husband as an incompetent buffoon or an atm. I could be biased from what I see online and on tv, but it seems like women are encouraged for the latter while men are near universally shamed for the former.

[–]theAnalepticAlzabo 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

[–]WrathOfSolace 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Eh, I fall into the younger age bracket on reddit and a lot of what I see here doesn't happen with younger people. Who knows

[–]OnTheSlope 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I remember when The Redpill movie came out the strongest negative reaction from women was in the 30-40 age range and the strongest positive reaction from women was in the 15-20 age range, so you may be right.

[–]WrathOfSolace 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Its interesting because we see a majority of younger people having more liberal political views and older people tend to have more conservative views. Which plays in with the fact that younger people tend to have a more positive view on gender and sex equality while older people are more likely to have beliefs that men should work hard and women should be at home or basically put men in higher power.

[–]Dancing_Anatolia 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think I have a decent theory on why younger women are so much more receptive of all this. Politics tends to be like a pendulum; it swings right to left, but it'll never swing one way forever. Politicians and celebrities are always annoying, and that negatively shapes the opinions of young minds (negative meaning 'opposite' in this scenario). When conservatives are annoying douchebags, the next generation might be more liberal, and when its the liberal's turn to be annoying douchebags, the next generation might be more conservative. And right now, liberals are annoying as hell.

[–]The_Best_01 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

If only there existed some kind of sane, rational center...

I don't think younger people are becoming more conservative, they're just more open-minded than people in their late 20s and above. They're still more liberal than previous gens, but in a good way.

Is it any wonder? Women and Men typically deal with their emotions in different ways and it's incredibly stressful when you try to discuss your emotions with someone and they get mad at you for "doing it wrong." [–]TheNewestofNew 33 points34 points35 points 8 years ago (59 children) | Copy Link

Maybe women are just starting to lack empathy.

Women fundamentally lack the ability to empathize with men. They have no frame of reference for how men perceive the world around them. On the flip side, men fundamentally lack the ability to empathize with women, for the exact same reason.

Sure, they can sympathize with men, commiserate, what have you. But empathize with men? Sorry, not a chance.

Excluding the varying genetics (XYY, XXY, XXX, X, XXYY) which is never argued for by these people, almost as if it doesn't exist and induces rage in them online:

There aren't. Testosterone, when taken by women, and estrogen, when taken by men, (as well as blockers) cause the said gender to act, and think, a lot more like the opposite gender. Unless you can produce a chemical that functions like a steroid that enhances/changes known differences between the genders, produced by the adrenal medulla, that creates totally different physical effects than either normally have, that is produced by an identifiable gender from birth, then no there isn't. Also most medical professionals (my girlfriend being one, and me having a degree in psychology) don't believe in more than two genders.

We know in dieases such as PCOS that women can produce more, or even as much, testosterone as a man. Most of the time those women grow hair similar to a man, think more similarly to men (specifically in areas of sexual reproduction, and have higher numbers of partners.) I'm sure a disease effects men where they produce more estrogen, but I can't think of one off the top of my head.

Anyone arguing that the things in your head are "more real" need to realize that your brain is made up of chemicals just like the rest of your body, and that the brain is something you don't have control over in terms of evolution.

Everyone arguing that it is a 'spectrum' misunderstand what gender is and (consistently) argue things like the way you dress makes you a man/woman. More importantly they misunderstand what a spectrum is, and that nothing about the things they argue impacting gender, are a spectrum. You have it or you don't. You have a penis or you don't.

Also in the great mouse utopia experiment lots of mice acted like genders they weren't born as, increasing homosexuality, and for mice to act 'trans' and seem just as confused as any 'non-binary' person out there. Which has to do with sociological shifts, and not anything physical on the mouse.

Trans people are a special case, and about 60% of trans people will attempt suicide after transitioning, even if the transition is "flawless" because they have a disorder known as body dismorphia. The other 40% are probably actually trans.

And even in the case of a person having a fucked up chromosomes (even in cases where they don't have any severe retardation/syndromes) the people still exhibit the signs of one gender or the other. Hell in some cases the person doesn't even know they have extra chromosomes. Ironically making the people who aren't male or female based on genetics, more likely to identify as male or female more often than than 'a new and unique gender.'

So the evidence suggests that, yes, there are only 2 genders. Anyone advocating for anything else is just falling into the same mental trappings of people believing they have multiple personality disorder (confused now days with schizophrenia) in the 50's and 60's. Despite south park joking with the words "designer disease" in an episode about HIV and cancer, thats exactly what 'non-binary' people are basically doing: Their lives are boring, just like the people in the 50's and 60's and they try to spice it up with made up bullshit that is mostly speculation.

There was even anger over people who argued against those claiming they they had MPD (Now DID), just like now when people argue about it online. Even stranger, there are only two cases of MPD/DID that even have any credibility, and both of those occurred in the last 10 years (likley due to the shift from DSM 4 to DSM 5, and accuracy with reporting symptoms.)

Case in point: The actions of a theocratic state or militarized group do not represent a religion. Or you can just accept that you're a fucking unamerican hypocrite.

[–]Islam-Delenda-Est3 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

The actions of a theocratic state or militarized group do not represent a religion

Not necessarily, but it does when the actions of that group match the words in their holy text, and a large number of adherents of that religion agree with their action, and their holy text also instructs them to lie to infidels to cover for those waging jihad you can assume even more do.

I don't expect you to change your fanatical worldview, but for anyone reading along this book will provide some enlightenment on the "religion of peace" and is very accurate to the text and its interpretation in the Muslim world:

Once again you completely disregard the second part of the point: You cannot say anything about Islam that you cannot say about any large religion, to include Christianity. And Christianity actually did take over the western world for a long period of time.

But you don't seem to have a problem with THAT. And not having a problem with that leads me to think that your worldview is like something out of The Handmaid's Tale.

[–]Islam-Delenda-Est2 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

No other large religion is growing and expanding into new territory right now other than Islam. No other religion is responsible for 95+% of terrorist attacks worldwide for the past three decades. Which has nothing to do with ability or willingness to sacrifice. What a daft point you've made, the motivation comes from the mind not the physical attributes of the body.

Who wrote those stories? Men right? Who is also projecting male traits onto women? Those men that wrote the stories.

Men are still better at handling physically stressful situations, as well as more likely to survive them. If women were as strong or as durable, pretty sure they'd be more willing. There's a reason the vast majority of the people in the military are men. It's not just discrimination.

What stories? I'm talking about real life. Obviously we don't know what it's like for everyone, but I'm pretty sure a few decades ago men relied on women more for emotional support. Why do you think more women are teachers, nurses, therapists etc?

Yes, and it has to do with evolution. Men and women are not the same, make a women just as strong as a man and she will not act like a man. Stop thinking that we're the same, the blank slate idea is bullshit.

"but I'm pretty sure a few decades ago men relied on women more for emotional support."

I have no doubt that men tried, it is in our nature, so called male mother need. But receiving that support that men wanted from women? Women cannot do that because that would mean recognizing his weakness and respecting him just the same and women abhor weakness in a partner.

"Why do you think more women are teachers, nurses, therapists etc?"

Because they like to manipulate and care for things like babies and kittens. I'm saying they aren't any good at caring for anything past adolescence like when men need emotional care or when teenagers need to grow into adults.

In the case of teachers, it's because they shat on the whole education system, catering it to girls and a stigma has been created to demonize male teachers in the lower grades labeling them as pedos. With that hostile atmosphere who the fuck would want to stay there, and this atmosphere applies to nurses and therapists as well.

[–]The_Best_011 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I'm not projecting, I genuinely think if women were physically stronger, they'd be more willing to save lives. I'm also not saying we're the same, but caring for people on a human level is a fundamental human trait. And willing to put yourself at risk to save someone isn't the same thing as emotional care. Not even close.

Actually, I think that showing weakness actually makes them respect us more. It's good to show vulnerability every now and then, or do you believe men are supposed to be unfeeling rocks?

Babies and kittens? What's that got to do with this? I was talking about grown-ups too, do you think only children are patients of therapists and nurses? I'll give you a point on the teachers thing though.

[–]hork231 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

"I'm also not saying we're the same"

When you say this right after saying this...

"I genuinely think if women were physically stronger, they'd be more willing to save lives."

You are saying men and women are the same in that respect.

"but caring for people on a human level is a fundamental human trait."

I would agree.

"And willing to put yourself at risk to save someone isn't the same thing as emotional care."

I would also agree but it certainly shows a willingness to put someone else's well-being in front of oneself, which women tend not to do when it costs them.

"Actually, I think that showing weakness actually makes them respect us more."

That's what they like to say but it's incongruent with their actions. An example, man gets sick or loses his job and the wife acts hostile against him rather than understanding. His situation is threatening her stability and too many women take out their worry on the husband rather than trying to help the situation.

"It's good to show vulnerability every now and then, or do you believe men are supposed to be unfeeling rocks?"

Non sequitur and are you trying to poison the well here? It should be obvious what I think of this based on our interaction.

"What's that got to do with this?"

I'm talking about women's ability to care for things and how it's limit to being effective is at that level. The average women can hardly raise a proper adult as shown by stats of single motherhood and its effect that it has on their children's ability to coexist in society.

"do you think only children are patients of therapists and nurses?"

No. Therapists, however, are taught terribly in how to help men deal with their troubles. They are taught how to help women and since men and women are different this won't help men.

[–]The_Best_011 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I didn't say they'd be as willing, I said they'd be more willing than they are now. Men would probably still be more willing, as far as the "fight or flight" response goes, men tend to fight more.

Again, emotional well-being does not equal physical well-being.

Well, that sounds like they're just shitty wives then. I don't think most women are like this. If they are, I wonder why the divorce rates aren't even higher than they are now.

No, it's not obvious what you think. It sounds like you think men are just supposed to be stoic all the time, bottle it up until they kill themselves, right?

That's because women aren't supposed to be single parents. A child needs a father figure in their life just as much, for different reasons.

So you're saying therapists are useless for men? That's good to know, guess I won't bother with one again in the future.

[–]hork231 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

"I didn't say they'd be as willing,"

You are right.

"I said they'd be more willing than they are now."

I don't think they will.

"as far as the "fight or flight" response goes"

Women have a different stress response, tend and befriend.

"Well, that sounds like they're just shitty wives then."

They were, but part of what I'm arguing is that this is how women will act when society doesn't constrain their behavior, as is the current paradigm. This is close to their natural self.

"If they are, I wonder why the divorce rates aren't even higher than they are now."

Because men are resilient and are taught to be put up with suffering from women. It's also a wonder that many more women aren't dead for the same reasons.

"It sounds like you think men are just supposed to be stoic all the time, bottle it up until they kill themselves, right?"

Holy shit dude, how'd you come to this conclusion? This whole time I've been arguing men's superiority in empathy (which leads them to believe that women are also on this level), ability to care effectively (aid that will help long term), and greater willingness to help others (to the point of self-sacrificing) in addition to pointing out how they are fucked over in therapy and marriage for showing the wrong emotions yet somehow you've concluded that I want men to shut up and take their lumps.

Your chain of logic hit a major curb since you have thought ill of me at some point in this discussion and have concluded I want men to be slaves in this manner. That is the last thing I want, which is partly why I want men to understand female and male nature in order to avoid these traps and manipulations. I want men to view women how they really are, and learn that they don't fucking need them to live their life. If they then choose to interact with women afterwards that is their burden.

"That's because women aren't supposed to be single parents."

No, women are shitty parents, that's all. Do children of single fathers have this insane problem? Not as far as I know.

"So you're saying therapists are useless for men?"

Not what I said, I said the way therapist learn how to help their patients is specifically fitted for female psychology, not male's. So the majority of therapist will be useless to men as men do not operate in the same manner as women do. Look up Tom Golden for more information.

By "fight or flight", I meant that women will generally choose "flight" in response to physical threat. "Tend and befriend" only happens if there are men nearby so they can face the threat instead.

Actually, I think in the last 50 or so years, society has actively changed women's behavior, and this is getting passed down through generations, which explains why they now aren't able to empathize with men as well. Before that, I think women behaved more naturally. Society didn't "constrain" their behavior, they simply didn't have as many rights.

I don't understand, how do you want men to act then? I'm all for effective aid, but men have to let out their emotions on a regular basis. Did you mean don't show any emotion around women at all, and express your emotions to close male friends only? That's kind of a step back for society, don't you think? I haven't thought ill of you by the way, just a bit confused by what you meant.

How are they fucked over in therapy for showing the wrong emotions? What are the "right" emotions that women show that men don't?

How are women shitty parents? How are men better in this regard?

Aren't there many species in the animal kingdom where the male and female only interact to procreate?

Yeah, but primates aren't one of them.

That's more of the realm of things like leopards and badgers. Humans aren't solitary animals. If you try to live like that, you'll probably go insane in very short order.

The term "bromance" was created by women to demean and cheapen male friendships. Feminists add the prefix "bro" to things they dislike.

Not true, please at least try looking things up first before making proclamations about them.

What if we just take the girls out of it? We can have our own system, it's a counter-system. And then, you do things together, you swim, you row, you... boat, you eat, you stink. We can just be guys! [–]seraph85 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is the problem I've had with trying to get back into a relationship since my divorce. Besides sex and kids I don't see anything I want from a relationship with a woman. We have less in common they aren't as fun or funny its just stressful and unlike real friends they demand most/all of your time or they don't like you anymore. Relationships with women just feel so forced.

My buddies bitch about there girls non stop and they cant do the things they used to love anymore. I really don't see why men put themselves through it. Maybe relationships with women used to be good but modern day women are not worth the effort.

[–]DownWithDuplicity 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There's nothing remotely romantic about my relationship with my male friends, so I kind of find the term "bromance" to be perverse.

[–]lilychick0385 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The title is a little misleading. The abstract of the study says "girlfriends" and since it was 30 undergrads my guess is most were NOT married (in fact it may be that none were married and Daily Mail just added that because they don't care). Not that this negates the outcome, but marrying someone is MUCH different than dating someone. And maybe that's what makes the difference in this generation, that a man might not get married until he finds a woman he can confide in. I would like to see this repeated with actual married couples.

These white knight comments never seize to amaze me.
I think the authors but way too much emphasis on the 'homophobia' aspect, as seen from the comments. Much more plausible explanation would be the breakdown of the female and her wage slave dynamics that emerged after world wars. I remember reading somewhere that before ww1, students would hold hands with their mates and as such, it being totally fine.

[–]MazeMouse 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I went from a mixed environment at work to a job which has only men.
While I enjoyed the mixed environment the difference is light and day in how people interact with eachother. There was a muted energy in the mixed environment as if people were holding back to not offend.

That is completely gone with my current all male environment. It's brash, harsh, sarcastic, funny and when stuff needs doing it goes serious-mode and shit gets done. You know, what feminists would call "toxic masculinity". Then when shit IS done it goes back to no-holds-barred. And it's always tongue in cheek and management is in on it.
Taking what we say and do out of context would have us branded, doxxed, deaththreats made, mailbombs to have us fired, etc for having the gall to make off colour jokes while at work. And it's liberating to finally be working in an environment where I don't have to worry that saying the wrong thing would jeopardize my job and life.

So hell yeah that "bromance" is more rewarding. It's made my working life go from "enjoyable enough" to "I love going to my job"

[–]perplexedm 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Good, it seems men are getting over the stupid gay FUD.

Whenever men talks friendly, few gangue of women and men in recent years started abusing 'gay' word. Men were reluctant for some time to be in friendship groups. It was not like that decades back when they had real adventures and positive networks.

Time to take back those times. If women want to writhen down in selfishness and self pity cult, let them.

Let men universally go forward and progress the way it should be.

Why are they always trying to belittle men and male relationships? "Bromance"? They're friends, nothing more. People that use the term are jealous, want it to be gay, can't stand that men can have good friendships

[–]TheTyke 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Definitely. Me and my best friend consider each other brothers. Tell each other we love each other and support each other the best we can. I'd kill and die for him. Nothing gay about it, it's just true brotherly love.

I've never had that feeling with a female romantic partner. Not sure why, to be honest. But I feel there's a lot of eggshells with wives and girlfriends you have to step on.

"But as awareness of homosexuality grew, peaking in the 1970s and 1980s, ‘straight men began to fear being homosexualised for displaying physical or emotional intimacy.’"

You're one of the scared ones. Don't worry. It will be okay. Soon, no one will care if you are straight or gay. You don't need to be frightened anymore.

"Another subject ‘Beck’ said: ‘Guys nowadays, in my generation, there is so much kissing between guys because it’s showing affection."

If this quote is what you are referencing, how is 'showing affection' "normalizing homos"? Is your sexuality so fragile that you'll suddenly be begging to take it up the ass if society allows or is indifferent to male on male displays of affection? And, if that's the case, why do you think it is wrong?

Besides, kissing isn't automatically about sexual intimacy. You'd know this if you had Italian relatives or ever visited family in Europe.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

1 Scared? Scared of what? I am not "scared" of anything. I'm not going to kiss another dude because its gay.

2 So your position is that 2 dudes kissing in the USA is not gay....Ok, words don't mean things I guess.

how is 'showing affection' "normalizing homos"

3 How is normalizing physical intimacy between males NOT promoting homosexuality

Soon, no one will care if you are straight or gay.

Yeah, I can't wait for the final demise of western civilization, the normalization of aberrant and degenerate behavior, and full extinguishment of traditional norms and masculinity. /s

[–]LordCharidarn 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

You're scared of people THINKING you are a fag, otherwise you wouldn't care what people thought when they saw two guys kissing.

You're scared that, deep down, you might actually be gay. Those sexy little thoughts you have, almost constantly, about those hunks on TV or the sexy twink serving you coffee? Straight guys don't have those thoughts. It's not something all men 'struggle' against. Straight people just don't have a strong attraction to the same sex.

And I know you have those thoughts, despite your inevitable denials, because you are projecting your fears. You fear that if homosexuality is normalized, EVERYONE would be having gay sex. 'Final demise of western civilization'. You say thar as though the only think keeping you and every man you know from having an ass full of thick veiny cock is the social stigma of the act.

That's simply not the case. If gayness were socially tolerated or irrelivant, gay people would still be gay and straight people would still be straight.

So, like I said, your scared of people thinking you are homosexual, but you only fear that because you yourself fear that you are homosexual.

But it's okay. Being gay is okay. And you don't need to be afriaid.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Yeah I'm not seeing it either. I get /u/azazelcrowley 's point that the bromance is "a learned behavior after realizing women are for the most part, hostile to men not basing their interactions with women around womens needs and interests".

Makes sense. Men have decided that if women are going to constantly demand emotional support, yet poke fun at them to "man up" when they have a problem (and yet still complain that their man isn't sensitive enough), why not open up to your best bud instead?

I don't see how this harms men's rights any. Maybe it's just a byproduct of the current state of men's rights?

[–]bufedad 12 points13 points14 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Suicide has nothing to do with men's rights. It has everything to do with men. I don't think we're limiting ourselves to rights specifically. This is an instance where men are blamed for reacting to bad behavior from women by withdrawing.

Gender roles that put responsibilities on men to "man up" should be something we tackle as a movement.
