I like this from the angle of "Oh wow, Prostate cancer must be way worse than I thought." Rather than trying to compete with breast cancer.

It can be a hard line to walk I know, but as with most issues here I don't want them to turn into a competition with women's issues. Breast cancer is a problem and deserves attention, Prostate cancer is at least just as much of a problem and deserves attention.

One can talk about the funding difference between the two, but that's something else entirely.

[–]SqueaksBCOD 231 points232 points233 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It is not about competing. It is about perspective.

People have the perception that lots of women die from breast cancer.

If lots of women die of breast cancer, and more men die of prostate cancer, logically that means lots of men die of prostate cancer.

It is in my eyes trying to be relate-able and make it familiar. They could put a number, but without context that number would mean very very little.

[–]old_user_handle 23 points24 points25 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. It piggy-backs on any and all advertising for breast cancer awareness.

[–]twomillcities 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is spot-on. All cancer sucks, but we have more money going into the 'for the cure' pyramid scheme than we do for other cancers that need far more research and / or funding. If people started seeing things for what they are, getting better perspective, money would be donated better and not to foundations that keep 95% of the money to make their board members filthy rich.

[–]Macismyname 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, that's what I said. I like it from that angle. Like, "Oh wow, I know breast cancer is serious, so this must mean prostate cancer is way worse than I thought!"

I just don't like turning things into a competition for no reason.

[–]The_BeardedGentleman 42 points43 points44 points 9 years ago (29 children) | Copy Link

The reason more people die from it probably has to do with the difference in attention towards the cancer vs others, given the age it affects (older people) vs others. As well as the typical stubbornness of the older males that are most likely to get it. Even though we know most of the people in my family die from cirrhosis of the liver, getting anyone to go check themselves out is near impossible. This includes myself, I'll wait til my arm is falling off to go check and see if somethings wrong.

[–]novice_at_life 35 points36 points37 points 9 years ago (28 children) | Copy Link

Exactly this, which is why it's worded that "More men DIE of prostate cancer than women DIE of breast cancer" It doesn't talk about number of cases diagnosed, just deaths. If men were as diligent about checking for and catching early and then following through with treatment, who knows what the numbers would look like.

[–]Philandrrr 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The numbers wouldn't look all that different. PSA is the test most Drs use to test for prostate cancer. But, even with high PSA numbers, the odds the man will die of the prostate cancer are pretty low considering most of the men who develop life-threatening prostate cancer are very old and will likely die of something else. And the men with high PSA often have other health issues. Do you want to go through severe radiation therapy at 80 when that therapy can lead to severe damage to the rectum and descending colon and really painful shitting? Basically, prostate cancer affects very old men who are likely to die of something else. Why go through painful, debilitating treatment? A lot of women develop breast cancer in their 30's, 40's and 50's. That's an age worth fighting and when the patient is more resilient and responsive to treatment. More women die of breast cancer than children die of leukemia. I still think leukemia needs forceful research.

[+]midwesternliberal points 9 years ago* [recovered] (25 children) | Copy Link

Yea, but if the genders were flipped here I absolutely know the feminist response would be: something something patriarchy, women have been conditioned not to go to the doctor as often. We need a social movement so women don't feel weird about asking for help.

[–]salty-lemons 25 points26 points27 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

My feminist response is that this is an example of toxic masculinity that is literally toxic. It is killing you. Men have been conditioned not to go to the doctor as often. You all need a special movement so you don't feel so bad about asking for help.

[–]dermac 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Men have been conditioned not to go to the doctor as often.

I really don't like this notion about a "unknown higher force that conditions you to do stuff". It doesn't exist for men and it doesn't exist for women. We don't feel bad about going to the doctor, at least no man I know does.

[–]ClarifiedInsanity 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Why is it due to toxic masculinity? I realise an argument can be made for it, but why is it different to say, the need to educate women about the importance of mammograms?

[–]salty-lemons 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

“Toxic masculinity is a narrow and repressive description of manhood, designating manhood as defined by violence, sex, status and aggression.” - Good Man Project's definition. So I can see the argument either way too. But men/boys are told to "man up", "walk it off," etc which would generalize to seeking medical attention. Studies have backed this up notably finding that "men who held traditional beliefs about masculinity -- that men should be tough, brave, self-reliant and restrained in their expression of emotion -- were more likely to ignore medical problems, or at least put off dealing with them, than women or than men with less traditional beliefs." You're right that many men just need education and awareness but some men may need more, especially since prostate exams involve a doctor putting his/her fingers into men's anus's.

[–]_pH_ 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I fundamentally don't like the phrase "toxic masculinity" as a shorthand for social standards that harm men, unless it's also acceptable to say "toxic femininity" when talking about social standards that harm women.

That said, the difference in funding for prostate cancer vs breast cancer is one of marketing- it is way, way easier to get a bunch of 20-something college girls to go topless to "save the ta tas and fight breast cancer" and raise a big pile of money than it is to figure out how to get people to donate to fight older male ass cancer.

[–]salty-lemons 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree with you on the toxic masculinity term. I also use toxic femininity to describe the way women adhere to social standards that are ultimately harmful to women. I also agree about the marketing difference between breast cancer and prostate cancer. While problematic and a little sickening, the sexualization of breast cancer has been effective in raising money and awareness, and I don't see much potential in sexualizing prostate cancer. My grandpa died with prostate cancer at 91 (died of kidney failure) and while the disease didn't kill him, the treatment was highly unpleasant and I'm sure, took away his ability to have sex. Both are problems I would like to see addressed.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We don't go because most of us can't afford to take time off of work. We are the providers after all.

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points28 points 9 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

We need a social movement so women don't feel bad about asking for help.

WHY ISN'T THAT YOUR RESPONSE????

Why do men have to just 'accept the patriarchy' and die from treatable diseases? Fix that shit. Don't complain that women are fixing their shit and refuse to fix your own.

The patriarchy is killing you, but apparently that's fine because it's not the draft or child support.

[–]IHateKn0thing 14 points15 points16 points 9 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

I love how even if something is actively pushed by feminism, it's patriarchy.

[–]k9centipede 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

What are you claiming is being pushed by feminists? That men shouldn't go to the doctor regularly?

[–]IHateKn0thing 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Feminism regularly pushes the idea that men are better off in all walks of life, and therefore require less aid and support.

[–]Griffin880 11 points12 points13 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Ok dude. Just go to the doctor and have them check your asshole for cancer. That's all we're saying here.

[–]IHateKn0thing 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Quite literally what I just said.

Just to make it clear I'm not pulling my claim out of nowhere- that's a slate article where they bitch about prostate cancer awareness because it's about a problem only men have.

[–]Griffin8801 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Did you read the article at all. They are complaining about the way Movember is marketed because it is limited to a very narrow and often inaccurate portrayal of masculinity. It has nothing to do with prostrate cancer being just a male problem.

[–]IHateKn0thing2 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Yeah, I read the entire article, and their reasoning is thinly-veiled bullshit where they offer no viable alternative. They just spend the entire time bitching about how offensive it is that anybody dare try to raise awareness in a way they don't explicitly approve of.

[–]Griffin8801 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I personally thought it was a decent discussion of the problems with marketing Movember the way they do, you were saying it was just them hating on prostate cancer awareness because it only effects men, which just isn't true.

It seems like you are grasping at straws in an argument only you want to be having when really you should be grasping at your prostate to make sure it isn't inflamed.

[–]IHateKn0thing2 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

If you try to shut down all forms of progress, and refuse to accept any alternatives, you're not in favor of something, you're actively against it.

Isn't that even a core claim by feminists about men's rights?

[–]Griffin8801 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

What are you talking about? The article isn't saying there shouldn't be a month for prostate cancer awareness, just that the way that month is marketed has problems. How is that trying to shut down all forms of progress?

[–]k9centipede1 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

That article is basically the same argument feminists have against a common breast cancer slogan of "save the ta-tas!". That a lot of breast cancer awareness boils down to focusing on the breasts as a sexual organ, removing the woman they are attached to from the picture completely.

So feminists are disappointed that men's health is going through a similar marketing issue.

[–]dermac 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The patriarchy is killing you, but apparently that's fine because it's not the draft or child support.

So patriarchy is bad because women get no "representation" which means they can't push laws that they need. So men should be of perfectly since they get all the "representation". That isn't what we see at all. That either means representation is a made up non-issue (since we see it doesn't work) or the patriarchy doesn't exist.

[–]Magsays 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How is it patriarchy that's doing this? It's because patriarchy is responsible for all the negative things in society right? It's because of patriarchy that men graduate college at a much lower rate. It's patriarchy that men are shamed for their baldness. It's patriarchy that men are shamed for their sexual desires, etc. it's all just patriarchy right?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Patriarchy is not a real thing.

[–]A_Direwolf 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Can the feminazis just go away and keep it in church, take your patriarchy myths with you. We're talking about Prostate Cancer awareness and has nothing to do with your politics or idealism. So please stop preaching and stop trying to derail the subject at hand by trying to talk about breast cancer. Thank you.

[–]SKNK_Monk 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Patriarchy isn't real, but what makes you think MRAs don't care about this issue? It's literally on the front page of r/menrights.

[–]56andcounting2 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I live in Canada, so everything I say will be applicable to Canadians. Other countries may have similar or different rules.

Women are given guides to self-examination that can lead to early detection and treatment. Mammograms are generally covered under medical plans. I know women don't look forward to them, but there is no expense. It's a well publicized cause, gets a lot of attention because, B(.)(.)bies, and no one wants to see women lose their lives (or breasts) to Cancer.

On the other hand, Men can't do a self-check. I'm not sure if PSA tests are currently covered under medical plans, I know I had to pay out-of-pocket for one. It's an invisible disease, you gotta go through an a$$hole to get to it, and no one really talks about it.

My Father had Prostate Cancer in his early 60's, and after treatment lived until 81. I'm aware of how this may affect my own life.

With Prostate Cancer, it cannot grow without the presence of Testosterone, so treatment involves taking Estrogen or castration. Taking Estrogen is an ongoing expense, has side effects and expensive, whereas castration is a once off thing. Guess which option your medical provider is more willing to pay for?

[–]gaedikus 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

for how much focus there is on breast cancer, i'm kind of shocked. is this recent? local to that country or worldwide? did we just get better at curing breast cancer? is prostate cancer presence increasing lately?

i have so many questions

[–]YHallo 40 points41 points42 points 9 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

I just looked up the rates in the US on cancer.net . I only looked at the first site that popped up so it's not comprehensive. It said that 40,450 women are projected to die of breast cancer in 2017 and 26,120 men are projected to die of prostate cancer in 2017.

Worldwide it is 307,000 men dead in 2012 and 522,000 women dead in the same year.

So my guess is that someone is either lying or cherry picking a country not in the main demographic of this subreddit. Which makes me sad because cancer shouldn't be a competition.

Edit: Oh hey it's right there in the poster. Australia. I guess I made an unfair assumption about the poster's motivation. I'm leaving this up for the statistics.

[–]gaedikus 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

thanks for citing sources and doing the research, you're a cool dude.

[–]hoots88 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, it is different if you look at individual countries. As the poster is from Australia we can look at the Australian Government Prostate Cancer website which contains details and statistics put together by the Cancer Council and other medical groups.

It shows that while more cases of Breast Cancer will be diagnosed this year, the mortality rate is higher for Prostate Cancer.

As an Aussie, I had no idea the rates were so similar as much more publicity is given to Breast Cancer in Australia. Id love to see this sort of stuff more often!

Estimated diagnosis in Australia in 2017: - Breast Cancer 17,730 (Females 17,586) - Prostate Cancer 16,665 Estimates Deaths in Australia in 2017: - Breast Cancer 3,114 (Females 3,087) - Prostate Cancer 3,452

[–]Zephs 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sounds like they might actually mean dies with prostate cancer, rather than from. Since it hits so late, there's a huge number of men that die with prostate cancer, but who were on their way out from heart disease or liver disease or any of another thousand reasons anyway.

Breast cancer hits much younger, so we are more aggressive about treating it and studying it. Prostate cancer is more of a nuisance once you're old enough, and the treatment is worse than putting up with the disease for the short time before you die from something unrelated anyway.

[–]hio__State 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Honest answers?

  1. In the US breast cancer actually affects considerably more people, it affects younger people, being diagnosed carries a higher risk of death and more do in fact die of it. I'm not sure why people in the US are so quick to believe this poster applies to them when it's trivial to look up US rates

  2. Decades ago breast cancer was stigmatized and seen as shameful to have and this lead to wide spread issues of those with it not seeking care and not being able to find support from family, friends or in their communities in general. This is what spurred the "awareness" campaigns to bring it out into open light and reduce the stigma surrounding it.

[–]gaedikus 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

thank you for honest answers. i'm only 29 so i had no idea that breast cancer was stigmatized, and only sometime in the last 10 years did i find out that it affects men, too.

i absolutely detest oppression olympics, in all directions. the "but we're struggling more!" mentality isn't helpful, and cherry picking statistics is even more unhelpful because it doesn't create a receptive dialogue.

as the saying goes "statistics don't lie, liars make statistics"

[–]I_Eat_Scorpions 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Well breast cancer is far more common, with about 250,000 new cases that will be diagnosed this year. Prostate cancer is more like 160,000.

Also 1 in 37 will die of breast cancer (about 6,756 people this year) where as 1 in 39 will die of prostate cancer (about 4,102 people) so yeah, breast cancer has more in terms of mortality.

Not saying cancers should be treated differently, mind you. Just stating breast cancer is statistically more of a problem.

[–]Hypertroph 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So how do your stats line up with the stats in OPs photo? Because they're in direct contradiction.

[–]Macismyname 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Did you read my post? Let's not compete over this.

I believe you, breast cancer sucks. People dying sucks. Let's work on this! Let's work on prostate cancer too, it's all fucked up.

[–]Omegeria 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Then we have the funding comparisons. Try to tell me breast cancer is statistically more of a problem with funding like that.

[–]rdrodri 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Neither gender wants to get tested. No one wants a mammogram or a finger up their butt. It's just uncomfortable.

[–]PleaseTakeMyKarma 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I looked up both of these as "how many women died of breast cancer in 2016" and "how many men died of prostate cancer in 2016." Four ads showed before any real information for breast cancer. Zero ads shown for prostate cancer. Bottom line... Men are less likely to make a fuss and try to influence people to support it. There is less money, and therefore it will always be less relevant.

[–]bradtwo 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's not women. It's coorpwrations acting like non profits to scam people out of donations so they can make a buck. It's fucking sick shit really.

I think you missed my point.

Let's not compare them at all. Let's look at them both as problems which deserve attention.

[–]the_unseen_one 71 points72 points73 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

But prostate cancer still kills more men? That's a pretty broken rebuttal.

[–]DarkAlessa 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Not to mention there are more women than men.

[–]the_unseen_one 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It is important to remember that people do die of prostate cancer, and many die young. I remember hearing that statement about dying with prostate cancer word-for-word but I had a sudden and rude awakening.

More men die WITH prostate cancer. This is a distinction.

[–]im29andsuckatlife 124 points125 points126 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I came in this thread to make this point as well. Prostate cancer is very common in males especially when you get to 80+. A good majority of men will die WITH prostate cancer. It is one of the slowest growing cancers and one of the least likely cancers to become metastatic (the bad kind). To OPs post that picture is definitely sensationalism and absolutely with out perspective

[–]Nowhereman123 19 points20 points21 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What did you think? It's posted on /r/MensRights, of course it's gonna be sensationalist.

Is breast cancer the most common form of cancer women experience?

Yep! Women: Breast, lung, colon. Men: Prostate, lung, colon. This is just in order of frequency not deaths. For deaths just move Lung to biggest cause of deaths from cancer for both men and women.

[–]lasssilver[🍰] 17 points18 points19 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Quick Google:

20.7 deaths per 100,000 men for prostate cancer per year

21.5 deaths per 100,000 women for breast cancer per year

Both stats from: https://seer.cancer.gov/statfacts/html/breast.html (or prostate in place of breast).

So, if that's accurate it would suggest breast cancer is slightly more deadly per 100,000 people, but technically rather equal.

Now add in how many men die from breast cancer each year vs. how many women die from prostate cancer and I'd assume more men die from prostate or breast cancer per year than women.

[–]Numendil 31 points32 points33 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Look at the other stats: 10% of women with breast cancer die within 5 years, while this is only 1% for prostate cancer.

[–]Tsorovar 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Doesn't that mean that deaths from prostate cancer should be more easily preventable, if detected early? Which is what this sign is trying to achieve.

[–]beekr427 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I got appx the same results. 40K men/yr and 50k women/yr.

[–]super_ag 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I"m not even sure that is accurate. Prostate cancer has a 98.9% 5-year survival rate. If the cancer is limited to the prostate tissues, the 5y survial rate is 100%. It's the same for prostate caner that has spread to regional lymph nodes. If it has metastasized to distant tissues, the 5y survival rate is 29.3%.

For breast cancer, if the cancer is only in the tissue (stage 1), it has a 99% 5y survival rate. If it has spread to local lymph nodes or into surrounding (stage 2-3), the 5y survival rate is 85%. If it has metastasized to more distant parts of the body, the 5y survival rate is 26%.

Now let's look at new case rates as well as mortality rates. There is an estimated 246,660 new cases of breast cancer for 2016 and an estimated 180,890 new cases of prostate cancer with 40,450 and 26,120 deaths respectively. The new case : death ratio for breast cancer (an approximation of how many with cancer die from it) is 6.1 : 1. The ratio for prostate cancer is 6.9 : 1. So it turns out that fewer people with prostate cancer die than those with breast cancer. This is not to say 1 in 6.9 die of prostate cancer. It's just an approximation of how common the cancer is (# of new diagnoses) and how many people die each year from that cancer.

Pretty much every cancer is worse than breast cancer (not to say that it isn't*terrible#). You would think that even with a large focus on women, it would be cervical or ovarian getting all the attention.

Edit: it seems I was not correct.

[–]playitleo 83 points84 points85 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The reason breast cancer gets so much "awareness" marketing is that early detection is the best survival strategy. If it is not caught in early stages, you are basically fucked and are going to die within a few years. Prostate cancer is very slow growing and can take 20 years or more to start causing problems. In older men, it often isn't even treated after its identified because they are so old and something else will probably kill them first.

[–]estuaryfire 41 points42 points43 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly this. Talking with my oncologist, he said most men die with prostate cancer, not because of it.

[–]mrbob1234 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep! Furthermore not only is the prognosis better if caught early, similar to most cancers, it's also because of the availability of good screening tests for it. A simple mammogram (x-ray) of the breast is pretty good. And women can feel their breasts themselves for lumps. Not the way with other cancers. Take prostate, some people even classify it as part of the normal ageing process. Theres no good screening test available. The best method of diagnosing is with a biopsy which in itself can be quite dangerous with relatively high rate of complications etc.

I also think the fact that very young women can get breast cancer is a major factor in regards to it's awareness and all the marketing etc.

[–]SqueaksBCOD 27 points28 points29 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I think it is really less about what is worse and more about what you can do something about.

Breast self exams are free and can be done at home by the woman herself. I am not sure what free and home self options that cervical and ovarian cancer really have. I think part of the attention comes from a "this is something we can do something about" place.

EDIT: I'm wrong. US has significantly more breast cancer deaths than prostate cancer but Australia has 10% more prostate cancer deaths than breast cancer.

Breast cancer is ranked #3 in deaths from cancer and is 3rd only to lung cancer and colon/rectal cancer. Prostate cancer ranks #5. Prostate cancer kills 75% as many as breast cancer and receives 5% of attention as breast cancer. That alone is atrocious and something worth focusing on; we don't need to spread lies in this subreddit to get people to care more about prostate cancer.

I put off doing anything about it for fucking ages due to embarrassment. Kept telling myself it'd be nothing even though deep down I knew what it probably was. If you feel a change go get a freakin ultrasound, it's painless reasonably quick and probably free pretty much anywhere. Oh, and my Dr at the time had a feel and couldn't feel anything and said probably wasn't anything but scheduled the ultrasound just to be sure, leading me to put off the ultrasound for another month longer. Don't listen to your Dr on this one, you know what your junk feels like better than he does.

yes, a bit like a blind pimple. though having learned a bit about how it develops etc since then I'd say any irregularity, especially if it's hard warrants a check. If it is cancer and you catch it prior to symptoms there's like a 95% chance that the total consequences will be a trivial keyhole surgery and a few weeks of discomfort. If it's not cancer you just had to sit through a 15 minute ultrasound. If it is and you don't catch it... well a friend of mine tells me chemo fucking sucks.

The reason this isn't more well known is because it's alittle different. Here me out, I come here often but how it really is is important (not that this isn't true). Breast cancer effects women of all ages, whereas the reason why prostate cancer kills more men is because a large portion of those men are elderly, so it isnt considered such a horrible thing, it's like well, you're old you're going to get sick and die most likely from cancer, turns out you have it in your prostate.

Breast cancer deaths are on average much younger. When a woman dies of cancer at 30 it's seen as a bigger issue than someone dying of cancer at 75. And I'd actually have to agree.

[–]PowerToAnnihilate 53 points54 points55 points 9 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

yeah I see what you are saying, but on the same note, suicide kills men much younger (biggest killer of men under 35) and nobody is really wanting to talk about male suicide either.

[–]soundsaboutWRIGHT 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

People talk about suicide all the time but don't find it appropriate to separate men and women. Both kill themselves and both need support. Separating their causes alienates people who need help.

[–]ShitStateOfAffairs[🍰] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'd argue that the mental health stigma against men is entirely different than the one against women so in ways, they should be separated or at least given separate attention.

[–]soundsaboutWRIGHT 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

There is a stigma but it's not biased against men. Men are encouraged to get help. There is much more support for men when it comes to mental health.

[–]ShitStateOfAffairs[🍰] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't think it's specifically biased against men or women, just that the stigma affects both genders entirely different. In my personal experience with being female and mentally ill, there's been a lot of "crazy bitches amirite" where a lot of issues are just reduced to women being women. Whereas with men there's a few disorders that don't really get recognition at all (men with eating disorders tend to be ignored a lot) and there's the whole "man up" aspect to it. Ignoring that different genders experience things differently for the sake of equality is a step away from progress, imo.

[–]PowerToAnnihilate 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I agree. But if we want to play that game, lets talk about men who get breast cancer since that does happen. The cancer effects them the same way, so why only talk about female breast cancer?

[–]soundsaboutWRIGHT 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because it is 100 times less common in men.

[–]DeltaForcePanda 32 points33 points34 points 9 years ago* (6 children) | Copy Link

I think the issue is simply that people do not see men as a "group". Women are their own group, minorities are their own group. But something about men makes people put up some kind of block where they don't see us as a group. It's more like "a lot of these men are having their own similar problems and they need to learn to deal with that individually" rather than people thinking something is affecting us as a whole. To them it's like saying "30% of people with brown hair develop <blank>" you're not going to look at it as something affecting people with brown hair as a group as you are going to think it's just something lots of brown haired people have to deal with. Hard thing to explain. I think that's the reason you can show people hard statistical facts and it wont affect them in the least. Simply put, men as a group don't exist.

[–]Apexbreed 40 points41 points42 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

[–]DeltaForcePanda 14 points15 points16 points 9 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

Men can absolutely not be seen as victimized. That's at the core of feminist ideology.

EDIT: As /u/Unexpected_reference has said you can't condemn a whole movement and I didn't intend to. But I totally get why you'd think that. This is an anecdotal reactionary comment not for the purpose of having a point in a debate, but in an eye rolling kind of way.

[–]Unexpected_reference 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Maybe third wave feminism but I do hope you open your eyes a little wider before condemning whole movements, what you're doing is just as bad as calling all Trump supporters racists/nazis...

Feminism sees patriarchal structures as a problem and while yes, they lastly affect women they do also affect men and are the cause of the thing you're complaining about (if you believe it). According to patriarchal structures a man must be strong and independent, an "alpha male" and hence he doesn't want to belong to a group or be seen as weak (aka prone to illness). A man working a women dominated field is also suffering from the lowered waged (compared to skill/studies necessary) then he'd have if he chose a male dominated job.

I think the higher fatality could also come from men seem to be much less adept at managing their own health than women. Every middle aged couple I've seen its the same story:

"Yea I got this bad pain in my side, my wife wants me to get it looked at but it's probably nothing, just some gas."

1 month later

"Turns out my appendix exploded. Guess she was right that it was more than just gas..."

It's a well documented phenomenon in research as well, generally men don't want to seem weak / needing help from others. And going to the doctor seems to fall under both of those dreaded categories.

I wish they would talk about breast cancer statistics honestly. Most women get breast cancer when they are old, an many are never treated because it's slow-growing enough, and their age is so advanced that there's no point. They say 1 in 8 (or whatever) women will get breast cancer in their lifetime, making it sound extra scary.

It isn't as dramatic as you put it. The last I heard of it, women die from breast cancer most often around age 70, and men die from prostate cancer around age 76-78. If women were dying most often around age 30, 40, or even 50 perhaps there could be an argument for it.

[–]PilotDad 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Possible factors that would influence these numbers-

  1. We men, as a group, tend to suffer in silence for a long while rather than make time to see a doctor.
  2. It's less likely to detect prostate cancer in the course of everyday activities such as taking a shower. While it's common to touch the breasts, it's not so common to give oneself a digital rectal exam. (Okay, I'm speaking for myself here. Your experience may vary.)

To fellow MRAs, this argument makes plenty of sense. But to bluepillers (or "purple pillers") this argument sounds like it's trying to make a male/female divide, and turns things into a gender divide instead of gender unity.

Maybe put a statistic like "Help prostate and breast cancer! 1,000 people die of breast, while 1,100 people die of prostate cancer!" (Idk the actual numbers, but put em in) And have the blue/purple piller connect the dots on their own.

I believe that most of these threads have missed the point of the poster entirely. It's not a competition. It's not even really to debate the numbers. The point is to make people (men) take notice and become aware of what they could be facing. As some of you pointed out, men are far less likely to get regular check ups and catch cancer early. So if this poster makes even one man say "Oh sh$t... maybe I should get checked out!", then it has achieved the goal of the marketing campaign.

Cancer sucks either way. But yes! Breast cancers survival rate when caught early is extemely high.

Since it's location can be isolated easier than the cervix or prostate.

Honestly it all just because of the pink ribbon scam I mean foundation.

It's easier to talk someone into a boob squeeze than a finger up the ass.

[–]scyth3s 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That depends

[–]SuperSulf 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Is it really a scam if they increase awareness and people get screened earlier and catch stuff?

I'm not a huge fan of Komen but they're still useful.

[–]Dylothor 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

No, because other organizations do the same exact thing, but also donate to cancer research. The two aren't mutually exclusive. Komen does it for profit.

[–]SuperSulf 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Is cancer research the only useful thing when it comes helping people? Are screening and awareness not helpful?

https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=4509

I don't like their policies with copyright infringement and stuff, but they're still a good charity.

https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.programs&orgid=4509

They just don't focus much on cancer research, so if that's what you care about, donate to something else. And I get that their slogan is a bit misleading considering they don't donate much to "the cure".

[–]Dylothor 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

they're still a good charity

I disagree. Any charity that is both for profit and sues to protect its "intellectual property" is not a good charity to me. Successful and good are not the same.

[–]SuperSulf 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why do you think they're any more "for profit" than other cancer charities?

[–]Eiriktherod 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is a lovley & tactful ad, I wish they had it in my area!

[–]falsestone 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've often heard this attributed to underdiagnosis not due to a lack of access to gastroenterologists or others who may perform colonoscopies, but due to failure of patients to seek these screenings and to follow up as recommended (in US healthcare, as a member of the research community). It's thought to stem in part from the "macho man" persona where men don't "complain" (seek help). Also, a better equivalent might be pap smears for cervical cancer: both require penetrative screening by a specialist, are sex-specific, and are underdiagnosed due to a lack of screening. Breast cancer can affect either sex, but only XX women have cervices and only XY men have prostates.

[–]wlxr 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Effective and targets the groups who should care. Nice.

[–]suitology 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]BattmanRI 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

FYI just gonna call bullshit on this "fact" :2013 40k+ women died of breast cancer and 27.5k+ men die of prostate in USA - Australian stats only show projected 2017 (which shows Prostate overtaking breast cancer) but could not find prior data to support this stat. Sounds like a marketing ploy.... https://www.cdc.gov/cancer/breast/statistics/index.htm https://www.cdc.gov/cancer/prostate/statistics/index.htm

[–]TheSpiffySpaceman 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The comma splice though :(

[–]Unexpected_reference 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Should at least get a tag that this is true to Australia and not US/EU since some comments seem to think it's a hidden conspiracy to kill men.

[–]jr_G-man 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Is this real? I thought most men die WITH prostate cancer, not OF it.

[–]BlackBeltBeta 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Should cancer really be a competition here? Reasonably speaking most types of cancer are treatable through the same methods, so research into a cure would likely be universal. So just because breast cancer gets more attention doesn't make this a case of women having more rights than men, like the title of the subreddit suggests.

[–]kilbox1a1 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Can we all agree all types of cancer just flat out suck?

[+]DrewFlan -16 points-15 points-14 points 9 years ago (23 children) | Copy Link

Uhh, my 5 minute Google search shows that this is flat out wrong:

It is estimated that 26,120 deaths from this disease (prostate cancer) will occur this year.

.

It is estimated that 40,890 people (40,450 women and 440 men) will die from breast cancer this year.

Actually you're stating the US rates. Interesting enough in Australia (where this poster is from) it appears that the numbers are reversed and more men do die of prostate cancer.

https://canceraustralia.gov.au/affected-cancer/cancer-types/breast-cancer/breast-cancer-statistics

https://prostate-cancer.canceraustralia.gov.au/statistics

...But the big question is why is this different in Australia???

[–]DanBMan 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Regional differences can have odd effects on diseases, it's not fully understood why though. For example MS rates seem to correlate with how close you are to the equator, with being closer to the poles increasing your chances of developing it. Furthermore moving from the equator to a more polar climate greatly increases the risk, while moving from the poles to the equator actually decreases it.

[–]Alkomb 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's actually very interesting.

[–]Krooked_Kangaroo 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

...But the big question is why is this different in Australia???

Breast cancer screenings are probably more ubiquitous in Australia than in the US. I would also say that our healthcare system probably treats and prevents breast cancer better than the US system does, driving down deaths.

Australian and American men however aren't letting their doctors put a finger up their asses often enough.

TL;DR: Difference is in breast cancer treatment / prevention.

[–]topflyte17 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I guess a lot more tends to happen "down under" there.

[–]OSHA_certified 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

It wouldn't be so bad if you didn't outright refuse to edit your comment to state your mistake.

[–]DrewFlan -5 points-4 points-3 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

But then how would people like you get that warm fuzzy feeling that comes from pointing out other's mistakes? I am willing to take one for the the team.

First you came across as a moron. Then you came across as an even larger moron "I'm wrong and proud of it.

Now you're just being a condescending asshole.

[–]DrewFlan -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

You could have said "this was taken in Australia, not the USA" or "you are mistaken on the country" or something less cheeky in your original reply to me. Being condescending begets the same in return - you are not without fault here.

[–]dickfourbutt -3 points-2 points-1 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I'm with you man. Who cares it's the most down voted comment anyway. People on this site just love to prove people wrong

People love to prove condescending assholes wrong, there's a difference.

[–]DrewFlan 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]Dylothor1 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Because you tried to prove something wrong by saying you debunked it with a "five minute google search" when in reality you just made a mistake and assumed that it was in the US.

[–]blackhole885 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Cancer sux and IMO shouldn't be used as a gendered/political issue. There's many types of cancer and we can all get it, IMO a united front against it is best.
