If it weren't likely to happen then nobody should mind if the Selective Service was either abandoned or made gender-inclusive. Unfortunately, they mind very much.
It might not seem like a big deal to put your signature on a document that asks you to voluntarily give your life up for whatever mess your country gets involved in. After all, it may never come to pass. Except that now you've given the government this incriminating document that they can use against you should you try to get out of being sucked into some criminal enterprise you could have never seen coming.

I was by my school without consent and I never signed the form they sent me.
Because of selective service, which is limited only to men in America, so in other words you could say:
Because I was born a man, I have never voted. I never went to college and never got an official job. I have worked independent contracting all my life paying 1099 taxes because I wouldn't sign a form the government sent me. Because I am a man I could be in prison tomorrow at the governments whim.
Who is the truly discriminated gender? If I was female I wouldn't even know what selective service is, hell, I did a survey of the females I know and majority barely knew what selective service was and most didn't know it was required to drive vote or work. If I was a woman I would have been ushered into college with open arms, encouraged and empowered to vote without signing away my life and freedom, and had a much easier time finding employment.
And I'm going to put this out there, if there ever comes a day when the government attempts to force me to kill or be killed on their behalf, to "defend my freedom", I sure as hell will defend my freedom. I will defend it from the people attempting to take it from me, also known as the government attempting to have me kill on their behalf.

I must purchase my right to drive, vote, or work in America as a man, and the currency I must use to purchase those rights are my soul and my life.
As a woman, those rights are freely handed out. Of the women I asked, majority had no idea what selective service was, and almost 100% were not aware it was required to vote, drive, and work.

Signing up for the military draft. If conscription is needed, the US has a handy list of almost all males over the age of 18.
Where as, women are not required to register, and are explicitly disallowed to by law.
It was also part of a womans right to vote requirement, that was repealed before passing due to the woman folk aghast at being told they have to register, and may get drafted.

In the US males, and only males, must put their names and adresses on a list that could be used to draft or consript them into the army. If they do not register they can't do several things as listed. If you move you must let the Selective Service know within 10 days so that they can keep track of you.

I would hate the day that they reinstated the draft. If they came for me.. I'd honestly flee the country. I will not fight corrupt wars for corrupt bought and paid for politicians. Just because I'm a man doesnt mean I have to fight. I hate violence.
If they came and asked me to "defend my freedom" I would. I would use my legal guns to defend my freedom from those actively attempting to take it from me. I would not "defend my freedom" from some little goat village across the world.

I don't really understand the big deal with selective service. You have to registrer, why? I guess it's because U.S. does not have a central person register but aren't you just as eligble for the draft if you haven't registered?

Well that's the main reason why it keeps being brought up. It's the biggest example of legal gender discrimination we have in the USA. Other than toplessness laws, try to find a law that explicitly disadvantages women in relation to men, and you won't find anything in writing.
But other than that, while we haven't had conscription since the Vietnam War, 40 years isn't that long of an amount of time. (19 years between WW2 and Vietnam, 23 years between WW1 and US involvement in WW2, and 48 years between the American Civil War and WW1) and whether the conscription is active or not, here stateside you can still be imprisoned, potentially losing your rights to vote as well due to being convicted, if you can be shown to have active knowledge of not having registered.
