From the comments on my previous post, at first I deducted that it was a somewhat pointless discussion since the conclusion would simply be that men suck and that there are assholes/LVM to be found within any profession. However, when a user requested that I summarized my findings from the thread, I discovered that while the above was still true to a large degree, there were actually professions standing out with what I would say is enough quantitative data to be relevant.

Let’s say you did a survey amongst roughly 400 women (same as users participating in the discussion) asking them what kind of food they didn’t like. Now, there would definitely be a lot of different opinions as food preference is a very subjective experience. So fx a lot of women might state that they absolutely hated sushi while other women only had positive experiences eating sushi. Still, if most of the women listed sushi as a negative, you would be able to deduct that generally, women don’t like sushi and use this knowledge to avoid certain restaurants when asking a woman you don’t know very well out for dinner.

From this outlook, I decided to turn the discussion into relevant information that you can actually use to tell if there are certain professions that you should avoid or beware of when dating.

This post is already going to be long, so I won’t go into details, but it was quite time consuming work. I’ve had to apply spreadsheets and come up with different point systems, groupings of professions, reading, re-reading and interpreting the positive or negative representative value of comments, factoring in significant numbers of upvotes, applying my best knowledge about qualitative and quantitative studies, interview techniques etc. to be able to present you with the most accurate conclusions possible.

The most important value that I’ve sorted answers by is “general relevance/multiple experiences”. Why? Because we’ve all had negative experiences with LVMs and exes. But your ex-boyfriend had to have some kind of profession, right? So let’s say I dated a photographer who was an absolute asshole and for this reason I personally dislike and avoid dating photographers. While this guy probably most definitely was an asshole, if I didn’t have negative experiences with other photographers when dating or in general, saying all photographers are assholes would be false/too subjective, thus making my contribution to the discussion irrelevant data unless a large number of other women had the same negative experience with photographers.

The same approach has been applied the other way around. So fx in my initial post, I listed Chefs as a positive. But considering the number of women commenting listing Chefs as a negative, I have had to conclude that my experience is “false” in a bigger perspective, thus putting Chefs on the “Avoid” list.

Which brings me to the lists. I have separated the professions into three categories: Avoid, Risky and Questionable. How do I suggest you use these lists? Well, “Avoid” should be pretty clear, “Risky” can be used so that when meeting someone with this profession, you are extra aware of red flags and can look through other women’s experiences with negative traits associated with a certain profession in the comments of my original post to catch bad behaviour early on. The “Questionable” list is exactly that. Information about professions that are questionable/possibly risky when dating, so this category is mainly for your information and less of a warning sign than the first two. Professions that didn’t have sufficient quantitative data to draw conclusions from were left out.

As this was a discussion prompting a negative response, obviously there weren’t many suggestions as to what would be a good profession to date. However, two women independently mentioned Accountants positively and I didn’t see anyone commenting negatively on this profession, so who knows, maybe that’s the one safe bet.

Finally, to the lists!
