Perfectly put. They hope they run into a woman like this who is too timid to say stop so they they can have their way with them. From what I’ve seen their response is always about how asking “kills the mood” 🙄 because making someone bleed from being so rough doesn’t?
I’m so turned off by hookup culture these days. She’s bleeding and being called crazy shit for some “guy” just for attention/ validation? What exactly does she get out of this? I get that he is gentle other times but I’d love to hear exactly how she benefits from their arrangement

Men view sex as something they do to us and not with. They can't comprehend consent because they don't think women are people with autonomy so they'll sexually assault us and then be like "she didn't say no or stop" when I'm pretty sure her body language was saying "ow."
Studies have shown men can read body language as they do successfully in other scenarios. With sex they just don't care.

“I don’t know if he just likes it rough or what’s up”
A very revealing question. She intuits (correctly) that this man gets off on debasing and hurting her. But she anticipates the orthodox retort of “he’s not an abuser, he just likes it rough, it’s his kink, and you should respect that”. Her question sort of implies that him “liking it rough” is the benevolent reason for his abuse.
There is no benevolent reason to make a woman’s vagina or vulva bleed.
As for “confront”...jeez. “Should I ask him why he hurt me? Should I demand an explanation for his sadism?” Hows that going to achieve anything. This man is a pornsick sexual sadist and he’s at least done her the favour of revealing his true nature.

This guy is not even your boyfriend, congratulations now leave and don't go back. He's just pushed his first boundary it doesn't usually get better because you communicated. He will just wait a couple of weeks then try again.
Here's what she should communicate: you went too far and without warning. What you did was disrespectful, a complete turn off and you physically hurt me. Goodbye.
There's always a chance he somehow thought she would like it because she once stupidly said she likes it rough just to seem more sexually adventurous. And he stops after she tells him but why risk it. I learned early on never to tell guys that I like it rough (I don't) or any kinks to seem 'cool'. It's just an open invitation to be abused.

I swear I’m going to get medieval on the ass of any guy I find out hurt one of my daughters. They better stay the fuck away. The damage they’ve done to society because of their dicks is atrocious and there are no words. Then they act like victims when they’re still completely complicit in encouraging this damage even if they’re not rapists. They’re all depraved and obsessed with sex and objectifying women. Oh my goodness. This is horrible.
Sexual politics are not easy to navigate and this shows you that “consent” doesn’t work: it always forces the onus on the woman to say yes and no.
The point is that good sex is something which comes from a place of mutual vulnerability. It’s not about constantly having to worry about about pleasing your partner.
What I would ask her is if she felt she could only have sex on the grounds that she feels desirable — if so, then this will objectify her and she will continue to be abused in this way.
EDIT: because of the reply beneath, it’s my point that consent is essentially a very arbitrary concept which doesn’t protect women from sexual violence. If consent worked, we would not experience the violations we’ve experienced.
[–][deleted] 41 points42 points43 points 5 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
This is not consent. From the post, they had exchanged consent for what she described as previously sweet, mutually satisfying sexual contact.
They hadn't discussed this type of contact at all, which from the post is sexual assault. Consent is a conversation about boundaries, likes and dislikes, hard nos, soft nos, a safe word (if needed, as in soft nos will be explored), definite yesses, etc. It is NOT pushing someone's boundaries and make them say no while being traumatized and assaulted to get you to stop.
THAT IS ASSAULT. It is NOT consent.
I don't know how anyone can read this and think it means this guy had consent. He didn't. He clearly didn't. This woman is traumatized and in shock. She was sexually assaulted and isn't thinking clearly. Can we, as women, please not make fun of her for not being a perfect victim? She needs help. I've been a victim in this type of situation and you are not thinking clearly at all. Further, you are very ripe for being abused again by anyone who finds you. Your no doesn't work for awhile because it was completely ignored. Worse, her body is reacting in trauma and is in the typical fight, flight, freeze, fawn so it likely took a lot of strength to post here and leaving may feel beyond her capabilities right now (but she needs to do it). She needs help, kindness, care, and therapy.
She is in shock and is traumatized right now. Maybe a mod of this sub will reach out to her, better someone with training in trauma. She could use a caring, trained soul to listen and speak words of kindness. My heart goes out to her.
[–]MrsJohnMarston__FDS Newbie 14 points15 points16 points 5 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
I don’t think this was my point, that it wasn’t assault. I’m saying consent doesn’t protect women from assault.
It’s pointless having a conversation in my mind with him about this because he obviously doesn’t understand that. It’s clear that he views her as an object of his desire.
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
We're in agreement here. No trying to have a conversation with a rapist / assaulter.
I'm not totally clear what your point is, and no, the onus is not on us to protect ourselves from violent men. But, there are steps we can take and I will say that being cognizant of consent can be a flag for these types of men if we're paying attention. If someone doesn't seek out your consent for acts you would have consented to, that's a blazing flag to not see them again. I've had this happen myself. No conversation, no seeking of my verbal yes (or no), nothing. I would have consented but he didn't know that. No chance I'm alone with that person again, and I will treat him like he is dangerous because I fully believe he is.
Someone who doesn't care about getting a yes will not heed a no. In true consent culture, silence is a no and does not equal consent. It's a do not proceed.
Take heed and be careful. Please note that this does NOT make the assault this woman's or any victim's fault. This is 100% the assaulter/rapist's fault.
[–]MrsJohnMarston__FDS Newbie 13 points14 points15 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
I certainly don’t think it’s her fault at all.
My point is that consent discourse is part of this broader “cOmMiNiCate” nonsense (like the OP has pointed out). When men should know not to assault you. Constantly the responsibility has burdened women.
The point about objectification is one where you feel as if you’re being made the object of sex, the “desired”. Whereas good sex comes from a place where you’re two people entwined. If someone assaults you it’s because they’ve dehumanised you to an object (I read it implicitly in her post, but if you asked her in those terms she could see it is therefore worthless confronting him, he’s too porn-sick). Much of this goes back to FDS teaching us to listen to the subtle clues men give us in their use of language about sex as potential red flags.
Pornography has accelerated this emphasis on searching for women’s desire, but it’s burdened with loathing and hatred ergo we see a rise in violent sexual assaults and rapes.
[–]shutup201FDS Newbie 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
I took what you said as men exploiting consent to use it like a rape loophole. I detest how men use the...she consented arguement nowadays when they know they manipulated and pushed a women against her boundaries. Sooooo many people blame women for bad consensual sex, but I wish people would not simplify it down to consent or a lack of no because it leads predatory men to target young, naive, meek and timid women. They are fully aware of what they are doing and the motivations behind it are the same as rape but most will just say...she consented, this downplays real rape, etc so it's on her but what about his awful ass and his awful intentions to sexually hurt and misuse a woman's body just because she's a woman? I wish...WISH...society would analyze these situations further and call men out on it.
Women rarely initiate these type of boundary exploiting situations. It's always rotten men exploiting women.
[–]MrsJohnMarston__FDS Newbie 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yes, that’s what I was meaning. It’s discussed quite often in FDS why women don’t outwardly say “no” — I consider myself a confident person but it doesn’t mean that I haven’t become intimidated by men, especially when they wanted to have sex with me.
I’ve never mentioned this before but when I was in America I remember being peer pressured into sex — I was being encouraged to have sex with a guy at the hostel I was staying at. Then the next nights we had sex because I didn’t want him to kick up a fuss, I mean he said he watched me sleeping.
How does consent work if they intimidate you? It doesn’t. Again it’s all about relying on women to say no. And they take advantage of that.
[–]shutup201FDS Newbie 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
They most certainly take advantage of that (relying on women to say no or stop) and society allows them to and they are fully aware of that. It is absolutely rape and wrong but they know they can get away with it, which makes it all the worse. I hate that you went through that. You should have never been asked or pressured in the first place. I hate how people can blame women for not saying no or stop vs blaming men for initiating these horrible situations. A lot of men do anything to avoid the rape label besides actually respecting women and their boundaries. I am postive this happens a lot.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I completely agree. Men should know not to assault us 100%. Anything that is societally acceptable or unacceptable need not be communicated.
We disagree that consent is part of that, and we can agree to disagree. Assault is a very different thing than communicating in a relationship or other type of interactionship (what are they calling these these days?) vs an assaulter. These are not the same.
If I'm still misunderstanding you, I apologize.
[–]MrsJohnMarston__FDS Newbie 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I think to say I reject consent as a concept is quite challenging and provocative, so I understand why you disagree.
Speaking from experience I don’t think I have ever verbally consented to sex. Consent requires you to be able to disclose your desires, it requires you to have inner knowledge of what you want — it’s quite burdensome and I believe it objectifies your sexuality and makes sex performative.
My experience of good sex didn’t need me to say “yes, I want this” it happened in a context of intimacy — complete vulnerability.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes, I see what you're saying now in context with your other comment. Bad people, rapists, etc, will misuse the concept to their own ends. That I 100% agree with.
A consent conversation requires both parties to participate. It isn't to put the onus on the woman to know everything she would say yes to off the bat. Both/all parties come to the table with desires and present them, and only verbal yesses or soft nos are explored. During intimacy, it's common to say "is it okay if I xyz?" or "is this still okay?" to check in, etc. It's an ongoing conversation when done in good faith - and it should be because both parties want the other to have a good time. To me, this feels very intimate and pleasurable so it might be a personal thing. It's not so one can look for loopholes to exploit. The concept of a verbal yes is to avoid unintentional miscommunication of "I thought so and so had nodded or smiled or otherwise indicated consent" vs I was thinking or frozen in fear, etc. I was recently in a situation where I thought I would hook up with someone. However, I couldn't get a verbal yes despite all actions pointing to a yes, but I said I need a verbal yes to proceed. The onus is on both parties because neither party should want to push someone unintentionally. I'd rather err that way than the other. Good men will be the same (and indeed, ime, have).
Text is difficult to convey this. It's something that very much depends on the involved parties handling it in good faith and with the intention of the other party actually consenting enthusiastically. That's the goal. Not to trick someone into not saying no properly. That's either coercion, rape, assault, etc and bad acting all around. If they try to pressure or coerce you into acts as described in the hostel, get up and leave. Alert the front desk that you need a new room due to being harassed and unsafe in the one you currently have (not blaming you in anyway, that guy was awful and deserves no women ever. Preparing for bad situations in the future is empowering). You would be right to ignore and not feed energy, but a bad actor like that might have assaulted you since he demonstrated his rapey tactics already. Sorry you had to endure that on your visit!
If a sexual partner isn't actively concerned about your pleasure or actual happiness during sexual intimacy, this is the brightest flag you need to not see them again. Truly.

Sometimes I feel like this pressure to have Sex early in your teens is exactly for this: so women get dragged in unhealthy habits before they even have the chance to find their confidence and to learn about boundaries. Teens are so much more impressionable and easy to manipulate, not only by their partners but also by societal standards.

I feel like this is fake. Why? Because every time a woman is raped (yes, raped; she didn't sign up for being beaten the fuck up) they constantly reassure the reader that the rapist didn't do anything wrong because she didn't catch up to what was happening at every second and told him "no, don't violate me". They'll say "he probably didn't mean to, he's a good guy and all, how do i tell him i don't like this without hurting his feelings?"
I feel like, and i hope, this is someone who's fed up with all the rape we let happen because of ASSUMED consent, and put it short and frank; he violated me, i started bleeding, do i talk to him about it? Without all the excuses on the way, it seems fairly obvious; he needs to be told that he's guilty of rape and, in rare cases, maybe she was such a good actor he's actually just ignorant and confused and may make up for it? Or he knew what he was doing, enjoyed it, and needs to be left fast without any warning whatsoever.
