Imagine being in a relationship like this for 6 years of your life during a developmental and formative period of your life. It's a super strong yet flimsy attachment with so much and yet so little meaning. At least that was my experience with a 4 year relationship similar to this.
It took him dumping my ass and a year of pining to get over him because I had convinced myself that he was my "soulmate" and I was so lucky to be with my "highschool sweetheart" and my oh my how I thought I fucked it up.
He was a serial cheater and a man child that I felt like I was playing mommy for. I hope the OP of this post has better sense than I did during that relationship. (This was long before I found FDS or anything like it.)
ETA it took years of therapy to stop blaming myself and accept that what my ex did was wrong and horrible.

Correct. My cousin married her high school sweetheart, and what a train wreck that marriage has been. Both were star athletes with seemingly bright futures. She went into a very successful tech career. He became a drunken, verbally abusive couch potato who works part time at his fathers house painting business - when he’s not too hung over to work.
Why cousin stays with her husband is totally beyond me. He is LVM supreme. Never marry potential. Sometimes it’s just an illusion.

Great question. I'm not sure about other women who fell into this as teenagers, but I know personally I romanticized it because of the high amount of these kinds of relationships in my family. Therapy helped me realize I don't know anything about their relationships except for what they want others to see.
I think I was also somewhat of a red pill pickme without knowing what that even was. I had a great HVM counselor who helped me see how backwards and gross that thinking was. SO glad I'm not brainwashed by that ideology anymore.

Me too! I had that picture in my mind but I don't really know why my parents are literally 10 years part no way my dad as a teenager grew up with my mother because she was in elementary school in South America. But I do think movies play a role when a romance teen movie end we just assume (or my strange little mind) they stay together for a long time because movie shown they clearly meant for each other. I am too glad I stop with that idea and if I have a daughter or son I tell them to never romanticize that idea.

Great point about movies aimed toward teenaged audiences. The media plays a huge role in what we think is okay and normal. I just got divorced after 20 years. He was my first “real” adult boyfriend at 21. I fell for him because I had a ton of childhood trauma. My dad valued IQ above all else, and my ex is very good looking and very high IQ. I truly never realized how abusive he was because I grew up in abuse. It was all I knew. My parents didn’t model a healthy marriage, no other close family or friends did.
“What It took” to break that trauma bond was him refusing to get a vasectomy, refusing to use a condom, orgasming in my ass, a SECOND abortion, and him trying to refuse to take me for the abortion. It STILL took years of counseling, an affair with a man who loved me, limiting contact with my narcissistic mom, 16 months of marriage counseling etc before I was ready to leave.
And when I started the process I was only leaving for my kids, because I was so scared to model for them what was modeled for me, and doom them to the same fate. Never again. They will NEVER see me with a man unless he loves me, values me, and expresses it in all the ways I want and need.

Sadly I had a similar experience in my bangmaid days.
