Her Name is Dr Kati Kariko

She works at the University of Pennsylvania and earned her PhD at the University of Szeged. Seemed like she married a HVM who supported her by doing the childcare while she was at work.

Her daughter is a 2x Olympic gold medal winner in rowing.

WHAT’S HER NAME DAMNIT?!?! I feel like articles and people on twitter constantly fucking do this. Referring to a well-known woman (or a woman who should be well-known/is up and coming) as simply a ‘woman’ or a ‘wife of [also well-known spouse’s name]’ or a ‘female [occupation]’ when writing headlines/tweets and only ever saying women’s names within the depths of articles... obviously isn’t cool lol. tbh I feel like many people in those types of writing jobs need to stop using such sexist tactics and language still in 2021?? so much media is trash tho, idk, it’s icky :/ and I’m so glad I didn’t grow up on as much technology and the type of technology that literal babies and children are growing up on today.

Edit: Thank you Dr. Kati Kariko for her lifesaving research! I’m gonna thank her on twitter too and spread the word on the barriers she faced just to be able to innovate and get grants to do research (like men in the field get all the time) - and she went through all of that bullshit nonetheless so that she would be able to literally save all of our fucking lives?!?!

Jokes aside, that's really sad how she was treated by her employer and academia in general.

I feel like when women go into academia it is more likely that it is truly for the love of the subject and not prestige/money because of the sexism they often face. I have a male friend who really wants to be a professor and admits he mostly wants it for the prestige/title.... 🙄

The wording on this is kind of weird to me. I'm not in science but like how common is it really to get your own lab? How common is it to get grants? That being said im pretty poor so 60k seems comfortable to me lol. Being an immigrant and a woman is certainly an obstacle to overcome in the sciences in America and this is incredible, im just curious why the other things made it in. What's the average salary of someone else in her field?
