Don’t buy it as a suicide, since it’s weird that the boyfriend was also MIA at the same time.

They really need to talk about domestic violence and what flags to look out for in school. How to report, utilize shelters, what resources to use if you’re in that situation or you see a loved one is, etc. These behaviors are already coming up with high school boys. Should supplement sex Ed.

There weren't even red flags, it was just blatant abuse and the girl's family didn't do anything. Didn't do anything about her dating an older man either. Why? Just said "It's weird". Their sister/daughter was being abused and groomed right in front of their eyes.

I remember when I kicked my ex out. I went and hid out somewhere he couldn't get to me until he could be picked up by his father.

He kept trying to invite me to come see him so he could apologize. The words he used were concerning.

"One last date"

"Treat you the way you deserve"

Things like that. It was hella creepy and his own father told me not to go back as I was in real danger of being harmed due to his past behaviour.

Or when my sister told a guy she didn't want to get intimate and he kept pushing, so she left and dumped him over the phone when she was a safe distance. Dude lost his mind and told her to come to his house right away so he could apologize. Then he said "You're probably the type to call it rape" and she hung up.

Too many twisted men to even risk it.

There are people in my life who were in abusive situations. This is how I learned, the long and hard way, that you can’t love or talk a victim into seeing the truth. Not like it happens in the movies. Abuse is insidious, starts small, and usually by the time outsiders realize, the victim has been conditioned not to see it as abuse: she made him angry, she isn’t patient enough, etc etc

The most helpful thing in both my experience and in articles I’ve read is to provide a nonjudgmental space and maintain contact. If and when the victim is considering a change, she then knows she can turn to you.

One of my cousins left an abusive relationship this year. She was a textbook case of clam up and retreat if we tried to call abuse, well, abuse. So we stopped doing that. We invited her out. We called and texted. On the rare occasion she was “allowed” to meet us, we would calmly tell her, “You don’t deserve that” often following with a gentle, “If our boyfriends/husbands did that to us, would you think we deserve it?” But mostly we didn’t pursue discussions about him, just let her talk.

There were times when needed to set boundaries for our own mental health, but we never names these, and continued to call, text, and send memes to let her know we were thinking of her. As friends do.

And finally! After almost a decade, she came to us for help to get out. She didn’t go to her parents, because all their stronger attempts to help were manipulated by her now-ex. “They never liked me. They’re trying to tear us apart. THEY DID THIS BECAUSE YOU DON’T STAND UP FOR ME.

“Your own parents don’t love you. I’m the only one who loves you. They just want to control you.”

So she came to us. And she couch surfed while she figured out what she needed to do. And we got to the point where I could finally - finally! - say, “🤷🏻‍♀️If he shows up here, I’m gonna kick his ass”

But omg, what a road to get here 😢

The only family member to seemingly notice the warning signs and call to an online forum for help and she's barely an adult, 18. She must be confused as shit. Probably doesn't know what to think, suicide or murder, her sister is now just gone. The Klonopin comment got to me. This is so sad if it isn't fiction.
