This tweet is pretty obviously satire, I’m surprised it’s confusing people.
[–]redpandanation_FDS Newbie 33 points34 points35 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I originally wanted to scream at the beginning
[–]betsybassetFDS Newbie 13 points14 points15 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The satire has too much resemblance to reality I think.

As a female engineer, every time I don't want to stick my hand up and ask for more money I have to kick myself and say this is why there's a wage gap.
Everytime I think I'm not qualified to apply for a position I remember that study that women will only apply if they match 90%+ of the requirements, whereas men will go at 60%. Gotta just ball it ladies till we get it all 🤙
[–]frustratedanon123FDS Newbie 21 points22 points23 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This advice is absolutely true in any field. Men who are so much less competent than 90% of just average women think they're awesome, so they go for the good jobs. We could easily have those good jobs too. Stepping up and asking, "why not me," when it came to advancement opportunities was the best thing I ever did for my career.

I was interviewing for a senior engineer position, and the salary they mentioned was a bit off, so I asked a friend (male) and he revealed that they offered him more. FOR THE SAME POSITION.
Always negotiate the initial offer, even if it's good enough or within what you expected. Because I guarentee you, men get better offers.
[–]CrepeCrazeFDS Newbie 11 points12 points13 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Should we start saying “pussy to the wall” instead of “balls to the wall” ? (This is not a criticism of you saying “ball it”— it just gave me this idea lol)
[–]Donttellmehow2feelFDS Newbie 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Question: does the reference "Female engineer" bother you? Would you like to identify as just "Engineer"?
[–]BlueGen19FDS Newbie 10 points11 points12 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well normally I just say engineer, I wanted to clarify for the sake of this sub knowing I was in fact a woman 😅
[–]worriedrenterTWFDS Newbie 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Your first point is not true, women actually ask for raises just as much as men, but unlike men, are perceived negatively for it and less likely to get it. You can search it up. It's men's attempt at trying to blame us for our own oppression.
[–]ihaveafunnyname71FDS Newbie 291 points292 points293 points 5 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link
I’ve been working in the same position for 10 years after my boss quit and I took over his responsibilities. To this day, 10 years later, I still earn $10k less a year than he did when he retired a decade ago.
[–]HumanFondantFDS Newbie 187 points188 points189 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
The real question is why have you been there 10 years knowingly making 10k less???! A job no matter male or female will pay you as little as they possibly can. It’s worse because we’re women. They know we won’t speak up on it. You should’ve left 5-8 years ago.

We relocated to a state with a much lower COL about 9 yrs ago... Part of it is I was promoted from within from an entry level position (have nearly tripled my wages since I started so I’m not mad) and he’d been hired with the education and previous work experience in his managerial role. Others (male and female) who’ve been promoted from within also seem to make less than a new hire into the same role would cost... so a little about gender and little about just being frugal.

From experience, this is always true regardless of gender. So if you want to make the $$$ you've gotta get the promotion and then make a plan to find a new job with a bigger paycheck in a year or so.

Wow I never thought of it that way. I seriously need to do this.
[–]queen_beastmodeFDS Newbie 62 points63 points64 points 5 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
Yea, one piece of advice I'd give to any woman just starting out in her career is that while women may be playing the game with some disadvantage, focusing too much on how gender is keeping you back can limit you by making you think that your issue is gender while it may just be that your company is acting like a company does.
Corporations exploit their employees. Some more than others. Long standing employees always give shit to newbs. That's just how they do.

I saw this in another subreddit. The amount of responses from men about this about how "the wage gap is a myth" and their resulting "reasoning" and gaslighting of the women who try to explain why it's not a myth is an exercise in "over-confidence of mediocre men" and "mansplaining". I mean, that one entire thread should be preserved for all time as the paradigm for mansplaining, truly.
[–]pinkcityscapeFDS Newbie 19 points20 points21 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I had an interview last year and the male interviewer flat out told me if I get the job I’ll probably get paid less than the male employees so I should get ready to negotiate. I was so pissed it’s not a myth at all...

Why nah sis as a tag? 100%, this is a joke, and a pretty funny one.
[–]Human_Summer_1709FDS Newbie[S] 18 points19 points20 points 5 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link
Na, sis re falling for the "wage gap" lie
EDIT:
It is my opinion that this tweet is a sarcastic joke, targeting people who say that the wage gap exists because women go for lower-paying jobs. This tweet, in my opinion, does not agree with that theory, and is sarcastically saying that women go for lower-paying jobs such as "female CEO" as opposed to "CEO" and "female engineer" as opposed to "engineer" and "female doctor" as opposed to "doctor." In doing so, this tweet seeks to underline the absurdity of claiming that A) women go for lower-paying jobs, and B) this is why the wage gap exists.
I used the "nah, sis" tag on this because I agree with (what I feel is) the intention of this tweet. My "nah, sis" tag is meant to be a commentary on the theory that: "the wage gap exists because women go for lower-paying jobs." I intended the tag to: 1) agree with (what I feel is) the intention of this tweet, and to 2) reject the idea that the wage gap exists because women go for lower paying jobs.
I hope this clears up why I posted this tweet and why I used this tag.
EIDT2: I have also changed the tag on this post to "FDS humor" to make it more clear that (in my opinion at least) this tweet is sarcastic humor, and is not to be taken literally.
[–]West-CookFDS Newbie 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Thanks. I was confused. Typically Nah Sis posts are serious posts or people discussing serious issues, so I wasn’t sure as to whether or not you were taking the tweet as literal or a joke. (Some early comments in the thread took it literally.)
[–]Human_Summer_1709FDS Newbie[S] 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah I get it. I've seen some nah sis tags on memes or humor/sarcastic posts, so I thought people would understand my meaning.
[–]_bethiebabesFDS Newbie 25 points26 points27 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
you might consider rewording that to “the ‘wage gap is a lie’ lie” because rn it kinda reads like you’re saying the wage gap is a lie and I know that’s not what you mean 😉
[–]Human_Summer_1709FDS Newbie[S] 11 points12 points13 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Thanks, I added an edited to my comment.
[–]LynneStoneFDS Newbie 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I love this on so many levels. Obviously poking fun at wage-gap deniers, but also seems to be taking a dig at the stereotypes that doctor/engineer/CEO and the common practice of labeling a job title by gender when a woman happens to hold to role.
[–]DPCAOTFDS Newbie 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
this was brought up on a journalist's ig I follow and one of the male posters actually denied it claiming it's not true because modeling pays women more..like he literally chose the one industry that pays women more to refute this claim
[–]Human_Summer_1709FDS Newbie[S] 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
And an industry where a woman's entire success and worth is literally just her looks. As soon as you throw in some skill, like in film and tv acting, men are paid more again.
And don't even get me started on the porn industry.

[–]miiju86FDS Newbie 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
And then there are the (obligatory - sadly) guys saying "ThIs GaP dOeSn'T eVeN eXiSt!".... where there are simultaneously so, so many studys and experiments proving that even already while applying for a new job, there are massively lower chances if the application has a female name on it....
[–]Human_Summer_1709FDS Newbie[S] 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
College and job applications should be submitted without names. Just a contact for the person. There's plenty of room for discrimination during the job/college interview, but at least the initial screening step would be focused on merit only, with no room for racial/gender/ethnic etc biases to seep through.
[–]miiju86FDS Newbie 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Exactly. But also a sad reminder about how things really are.... still are. Also it's unfortunately not practiced everywhere (the anonymised applications); in my country no application would be accepted without full info - which gives of course plenty of possiblities for discrimination. I have to say though, that in my country (I'm swiss) it's fortunately no longer that abundant as it used to be - but it's still there to a certain degree nonetheless (also it depends oftentimes massively, in which field / industry). Plus, if it's the case - go and try pointing something like that out - quite impossible....
[–][deleted] 46 points47 points48 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I feel this might be intentional satire just by adding female in front of each term to imply that women in the same jobs are paid less. If it’s serious... the irony is strong with this one.
[–]Human_Summer_1709FDS Newbie[S] 29 points30 points31 points 5 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

we take care of the kids and such as if we’re the problem.
And that is unpaid labor! Funny how men think house work and raising kids is nothing and shouldn't be paid. ESPECIALLY when you take into account domestic labor, women work more than men.
[–]Exsqueeze_mehFDS Apprentice 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
not only that but this is why the “stay at home” (historically the woman) gets a portion of retirement ... their unpaid labor has zero fringe benefits, and they try to make it out like they’re not entitled to it. Scrotes please.

The same premise of the old tired bs of 'biology' -
note: this is SARCASM ladies
The male violence isn't real. Men just tend to have higher testosterone. Hence they are violent, abusive and manipulative. Whereas women have lower testosterone, so they're like emotional, needy and clingy
