"Matriarchy", seriously? The woman's actual desires and interests in this matter were entirely ignored; she wasn't consulted by the "white knight" about whether she actually wanted the clips. It's not as if the woman ordered the man to retrieve the clips for her, with him being helpless to resist her command.

I don't see this incident as being about a man risking a fight to help a woman so much as it is about a man signaling his dominance to another man, with the woman as no more than a passive trigger for the conflict. This post is an excellent example of an MRA failing to grasp the roots of gender inequality, blaming everything on the "feminist establishment" and the "matriarchy" rather than ancient notions about rigid gender roles that teach men to be dominant and aggressive, and women to be helpless and passive.

Interesting story, but how do you know this guy was doing it because he was brought up to sacrifice himself for women? He might have just done it because he's the type to butt in when he sees even minor wrongs done. some people are just like that.

It kind of reminds me of someone I knew in my senior year of high school. One of my Cross Country teammates, we'll call Brad, was the type who always appointed himself the judge of EVERYONE else's actions. Brad once informed our coach that it "sent a bad message" that he required the athletes to dress in workout clothes for practice but didn't do so himself. (apparently Brad had never seen a basketball game... or understood the purpose of workout clothes.)

The best incident, though, was when Brad and I were on our way to our Athletic P.E. class. The class was designed for varsity athletes, and were were allowed to create our own workout plans for each class, so long as we have one that's reasonable and inform our instructor of it at the beginning of each class. One guy, a Tennis player, needed to take it easy during one class, I assume in preparation for a competition coming up, or to recover from an injury/rough workout stress; that's pretty standard stuff. He walks by the teacher, and says offhand, "I'm gonna take an easy day today." teacher nods, checks his name for attendance, and pays no more attention to it. Brad and I see this, and I think nothing of it. once we're out of sight and earshot of the teacher, Brad says, "hey, you can't talk to the teacher like that."

"huh?"

"you can't just TELL the teacher you're going to take and easy day."

this made no sense, so the guy gets a confused look, rolls his eyes, turns away, and keeps walking. brad doesn't like that.

He grabs the guy by the shoulder, pushes him against the wall, and tells him again, "you can't talk to the teacher like that."

The guy is shocked, says "ok man, sorry!" brad lets him go and he keeps heading to the locker room.

I'm kind of confused, and shocked, and I say something like, "what the hell man?"

"what?"

I stammer, and I tell him, "you can't just throw someone against a wall because you don't like what they say."

"why?" and that really threw me off guard, because he wasn't being trite. He honestly was puzzled to hear that it wasn't ok to do that. He just felt it was his duty to make EVERYONE corrected about minor mistakes that weren't even mistakes. It was surreal.

It's not even your place to judge someone's attractiveness to a third party - or their motives. The way you said this makes me think you think it's somehow more justified to "white knight" if a woman is "hot" so that she'll have sex with you.

This is a story about a guy being an asshole. One can speculate about his motivations for being an asshole, and that speculation could be interesting, but there's nothing in your story to indicate that there's anything more special than some jerk being an asshole.

And yes, the asshole is responsible for being an asshole....

If you're concerned about the asshole's behavior, you should report it to the management of the gym. Even if you were 'in the wrong', it wasn't his place to correct you.

This isn't a men's rights issue, and it's potentially distracting from issues that ARE men's rights issues.

Amusingly, I can't help but note you had an opportunity to white-white knight him right back, and you let it pass.

As soon as the woman came up to you with the clips, you should have said to her, "Would you come with me, please?" Then you should have walked up to the guy and gestured, "This woman was through with her clips. It was her business whether to let me use the clips, not yours. Don't interfere with her decisions again." and walked away.

I can definitely relate to this story, though not in the exact same circumstances. I just broke up with a woman who would find it too dangerous to speak up to a stranger like this, and so would need to have a man she knew speak up for her. (Actually, she was so shy, she wouldn't even enlist the help of a male who wasn't a close friend.)

What's even funnier about this is that the woman wasn't even hot.

I once accidentally clocked a woman in the face. With my elbow.

It was in a club, the place was packed, and I'm badly coordinated or something. I apologized, but she was totally cool about it, laughed it off. Guess who wasn't cool about it. Some skinny little asshole got into my face about it, (literally) puffing up his little chest in protest. He didn't even seem to know the woman who's honor he was defending.

I ignored him. If you're gonna white kinght, be at least a little bit concerned about your own safety.

Just a few things to comment about.

First, that was no alpha male, alpha males are secure of themselves and know they do not need to act all macho around a woman in hopes perhaps they will receive some pussy in payment. It doesn't really matter for them if the woman is hot or not.

Second, the only one at fault was the beta male white knight, he was being the ass, not you, nor the woman, proof of that was that she approached you to clarify the situation. Furthermore, beta males do not care about how hot a woman looks, they acknowledge hot women are out of their league and will do anything to attract any female attention.

For the record, alpha males, real ones, do not care about looks either.

That's pretty dumb, if someone leaves equipment in a gym I think it's assumed they're done with it unless they stay near it to take a break? I always take clips off of bars when people are done with them and have never had a problem, but I've only seen a few women in this place.

It IS his fault. Ingrained or not, he CHOSE to come over to you and confront you. He wasn't brainwashed into it or asked to do it by anyone. He made the choice himself, therefore must be responsible for his own choices and actions. Saying that he did it because it was ingrained in him is creating excuses for him. Don't create excuses for others, they need to answer for their choices.
