If she treats her child any way like she seems to treat her husband (as more or less just a means to her own ends), it doesn't really matter what the gender is, she's going to be a terrible parent either way.

More like "raised by snakes...."

Here here.

[–]ThatWhiskeyKid 12 points13 points14 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Actually it's hear hear. It was another way of saying hear what this person is saying. Check it out

[–]blueoak9 60 points61 points62 points 10 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

"That ultrasound revealed two things: the nature of his genitalia and my sexism. "

I was all set to hate her, but then she said this towards the end. Maybe, just maybe, there's hope for that kid.

The husband OTOH is a total pussy-whip for not pulling her up tight on her misandry when it first became obvious.

[–]Seppuku4You 31 points32 points33 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not so hopeful. The first paragraph she is fantasizing about the would be child, and the first thing she mentions is looks. Then she mentions intelligence, then humor. Imagine if she did have a daughter who was ugly/unintelligent/bland. I'm trying to figure which would be worse for the poor kid, being an unappreciated boy or unimpressive girl. The next sentence after the mention of the ultrasound is a tirade of disappointment

Also, the author hopes the daughter is intelligent so she won't have to get involved with any of the "smart" stuff the husband seems to take care of. Then she talks about basically playing dress up and wedding planner. She wants a pet, not to raise a child

[–]NibblyPig 14 points15 points16 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I kinda read it as, no need to be sexist, I can just treat my boy as if he were a girl, a copy of myself and expose him to all the things I think a girl should want and do.

Pretty creepy.

[–]XGC75 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree. The creepy part is just her rationalizing the crazy "he/she should be this" or "he/she will be better than me at that" projections.

It's the projections that are so damning to that child's life. You can't force a person to be the things they're not. We all felt this as kids when our parents would force us to try (and sometimes perpetuate) activities we didn't like.

[–]192873982 38 points39 points40 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Damn these stupid women in the comments. Most of them actually tell her it's normal to be irritated by just not having a girl.

[–]coke501 30 points31 points32 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The article itself makes me cringe. What does her husband think of her contempt against his gender? Does she look at him and see the same stereotypical traits she assigns on her unborn child? How far do you have to drive on the misogony-train to think this way?

[–]192873982 16 points17 points18 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The worst is, even in such situations they just don't realize their irrational hatred. She literally has a relunctance towards her unborn child. This is just sick.

[–]redfernspore 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She sounds like she wanted to breed a female seeing eye dog to walk her through the visual arts, not mother a human child.

[–]mrminibagel 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Probably only half are women, usually white knights are about half the comments on these types of articles.

[–]jakelove12 -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Really? Maybe it's just the timing difference, but most of the comments seems pretty negative toward the author's attitude.

But honestly her initial feelings are pretty normal. Or at least, not unusual. I mean, dads wanting a son is a pretty common trope, and the "tomboy little girl who likes baseball" is in almost every form of fiction that features a father-daughter relationship.

[–]EphemeralChaos 15 points16 points17 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Do I want a boy who’s smarter than me? Not really. I already know plenty of men, young and old, who think they’re smarter than me.

Wow, so humble, but she didn't had issues admiting her daughter would be smarter than her, she was not so bad at first it just looked like dissapointment and self realization of wanting a girl that fitted gender stereotypes, but once you see through her sexist image and dislike of the sterotypical image of a boy.

But I came up short when searching for probable reasons to like him, this mysterious person whose toenails have only just started to form, when all I knew about him was that he was a boy. It seems stupid now, but all I could picture were the stereotypical-boy characteristics.

What's wrong with the stereotypical-boy characteristics?

There’s no reason my son can’t be a tiny ballerina. There's no reason I can't sign him up for a class, even if it is full of little girls. The next day I went out and bought him some useless pink ballet slippers, with bows, in the hopes of having a child who is a better version of me after all.

In other words, "there is no reason I can't push my son in becoming what I WANT him to become, because I just can't deal with the fact that he may have his own personality. I also can't accept that something that it's not what I pictured is not better than me." This woman is SOOO egocentric and clearly misandrist, she realized that she was sexist by recognizing that she was expecting her daughter or son to fit a gender stereotype already, but blind to the fact that she is making a big deal because she doesn't want him to fit the stereotype now. Controlling, egocentric and sexist. Blregh.

[–]Blutarg 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, there's no way any man she knows is smarter than her! Sure, by her own admission she's bad at math, but what does that prove?

[–]Freyzi 12 points13 points14 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Guess she didn't stop and consider what if her husband wanted better version of himself? What if the girl turns out to not like all these things you're planning for her?

Well at least she realized her own sexism at the end.

[–]gnprincess 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

What I was irritated with is how she continually described how she wouldn't push gender norms on her little girl but as soon as she found it the baby was a boy, she immediately jumped to stereotypical boy things, like video games and mud. That's so sad to me and I feel bad for that baby boy, even though she did come to the realization of her own sexism. It's so hypocritical of her and it makes me cringe.

[–]AVAtistar 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I know self-promotion is generally frowned upon, but I switched gender for race, just to show what this woman is actually saying http://judgybitch.com/2016/01/25/why-am-i-so-sad-about-having-a-black-baby/

[–]kragshot 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

OMG!!! Janet...what the fuck!

LOL!!!!

You know that place where you go when you feel that you should be offended by something, but at the same time, it's so damn funny that you feel guilty for laughing?

Yeah, you did that.

And the sad part is that she'll never be truly called out for her sexism.

BTW, I'll give you your "official African American person's pass" for writing that piece, so nobody gives you shit for doing so. If they complain, you can tell them that I said that "it is okay."

[–]warsie 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

awesome.

[–]sexyjeremypharoahwiz 22 points23 points24 points 10 years ago (31 children) | Copy Link

Sounds like she's going to screw her son up quite a bit, putting him in dresses and treating him like a little girl to push her agenda. Poor kid.

[–]orangorilla 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago* (30 children) | Copy Link

I had a different take on it. It looks like she'll offer him dresses and ballet. I didn't read any forcing.

Seems to me that offering your child every option and letting them decide is better than it would be to decide a category they should follow. Sure, if you go by gender, you'll hit 98% of the time, but who doesn't have an interest or like that's genderatypical?

This has to be my most SJW comment ever.

Edit: to many letters

[–]colourful_opinion 18 points19 points20 points 10 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

It looks like she'll offer him dresses and ballet. I didn't ready any forcing.

"I'm not going to turn you into a pariah, but I'm going to make sure you have all the tools so that you can find your way to being a pariah, yourself."

Social experiments with your children, so that they can buck "the system" rarely turn out well for the kids. At some point, they have to work, date and make friends in that world they are trying to buck so badly.

[–]orangorilla 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

Kids are already social experiments. As a parent, your guidance should be limited to making sure they grow up good, and let them explore whatever they can.

Some children want solitude, some don't want "the system." We can't argue that things shouldn't be done because they're not socially accepted. That's empty traditionalist thinking.

[–]colourful_opinion 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago* (14 children) | Copy Link

Membership in society isn't optional. You're either working to pay your own way, or someone else is feeding you, clothing you, and putting a roof over your head.

And people wonder why the Millennials are so entitled? When Mom and Dad bend over backwards to ensure the kid's world view, wants and whims are paramount, that's what happens. Sure, let them dress how they want to dress, but also prepare them for being turned down repeatedly for job interviews and find them some means of establishing income other than employment.

We are called "adults" because we know that seven year olds with no real concept of money, no real concept of responsibility, no real concept of markets and competition for work and whose biggest decision is whether to dress like Spiderman or Batman today are a little insulated and detached from reality.

[–]orangorilla 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Our worldviews are very different. I have never dressed up for a job interview, nor have I dressed smart for a job. If you're a guy that handles customers, I get it, they want you to look okay. But what the hell, is there an office in the US where you have to dress formal, because your boss wants you to be aesthetically pleasing? I thought prostitution was mostly illegal over there.

Sorry, I'll wind down, dress codes piss me off.

Preparing your children to be adults is what you should do. They should be responsible, and ready to contribute. There is a huge difference between bending over backwards catering to them and treating them like their opinions matter though. And even how pathetic a parent you are giving your kids whatever they want, it's still no worse than trying to run an authoritarian household where you tell your kid what to like and what not to like so that they fit some arbitrarily established mold.

[–]colourful_opinion 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

How do you get from preparing them for the real world of adult life, where virtually no one cares about your opinion or how you want to dress in your private time, to an authoritarian household?

I want to live and work where you do, because if you've never worked where there's a dress code, then that's where I want to live. In the US and Canada, any job worth having has some sort of dress code, and most certainly has standards for interpersonal behaviour. It's not just clothes that make Millennials so tough to manage, it's their attitude. One Millennial in my office was griping the other day that after 4 years of working for the company, he couldn't get a six month leave of absence so that he could go to a music festival in the far north and spend the summer working at a pub to pay his way. He was aghast that the company told him to quit and reapply. He felt that he had "earned" his six month sabbatical with 4 years of very sub par work.

[–]orangorilla 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How do you get from preparing them for the real world of adult life, where virtually no one cares about your opinion or how you want to dress in your private time, to an authoritarian household?

Ah, I'm sorry. I wasn't clear about that: "Preparing your children to be adults is what you should do. They should be responsible, and ready to contribute. There is a huge difference between bending over backwards catering to them and treating them like their opinions matter though."

What I'm saying is that raising your kids can be combined with treating them like their opinions matter is a good way of preparing them for the real world. Let them know that you as a parent care and listens, but that most people won't give a shit. I'm cautioning against not giving a shit, so they'll be experienced in not being heard.

I want to live and work where you do, because if you've never worked where there's a dress code, then that's where I want to live.

I was a little dishonest, one of the places I worked had a "no sweatpants or yoga pants" rule. But you're more than welcome, it's right east across the sea, and possibly a little north, you'll know when you're in a fjord with your balls frozen off.

In the US and Canada, any job worth having has some sort of dress code, and most certainly has standards for interpersonal behaviour.

As for interpersonal behavior, professional across companies, but I wouldn't say any company is worth working in if you can't call your boss a motherfucker now and then.

One Millennial in my office was griping the other day that after 4 years ...

He sounds like a cunt. His parents failed. But we get brats from every generation, and each time, the previous generation will say the new generation is brattier than ever before. I forget which Greek dude complained about the youth talking back and putting their feet on the table a few eons ago. I personally think this comes down to the older generations having forgotten how much shit they had to figure out on their own, and never knew how bratty they were themselves.

[–]poloppoyop 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You know what? Lot of jobs will be doable from your home as soon as old people start dying with their dumb ways.

At the moment it is just some software jobs but once drone technology is used to control humanoid machines, even construction jobs will start being done from far away. Which could be your home were you can work even naked if you want to.

[–]colourful_opinion 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I'm actually not, though.

[–]Ricwulf 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I love how quick people jump to blame boomers for all of the worlds problems.

[–]warsie 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

but blaming millennials is perfectly ok!

[–]Ricwulf 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nice implication there. Never did I say that. What I will say, is that millennials are trying to reinvent the wheel, just like every other generation before them. They're bitching about how shit life is thanks to those dastardly Baby Boomers, forgetting how every other generation did the exact same thing: bitch about the hand they were dealt.

In 50-70 years time, I assure you that that generation will be blaming millennials for their situation as well.

As with every generation, they always think they're the first, that they discovered the wheel.

I'm not blaming millennials, I'm just calling them out on their shit.

[–]warsie 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

How is being allowed to crossdress meaning that you won't get a job? I'm pretty sure you can wear gender fitting clothes at interviews if need be.

Also, automation is killing everything anyway.

[–]colourful_opinion 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

The point is that you prepare your children for the world that is, not the Pollyanna utopia you wish existed. There's all sorts of stigma, bias and rules in adulthood, and pretending to your children that they can do anything, be anything, etc. when you KNOW that the stigma exists is actually kind of cruel.

Look at modern universities as an example of his trend in action, just not around clothing. Modern schools are seeing students stressing the mental health facilities on campus to a breaking point, much more than previous generations. The work isn't any harder than it always has been, but modern students are arriving VERY ill prepared for an adult world where no one takes attendance, zeros are a possibility, failure is a possibility, you're not the smartest person in the room anymore, and you're just one of thousands and thousands of students. Childhood coddling means far too many Millennials are hitting that adult world woefully unprepared for it. I was already seeing it 15 years ago when I was teaching, and parents were starting to show up to disciplinary sessions and tried to speak instead of their adult children. It's only gotten worse since that point.

[–]warsie 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The topic of conversation was about clothing choices. You decided to turn it into 'polynna utopia' in general. This is pretty much a goalpost movement.

Furthermore, you can easily make the counterpoing that increasing stress in university is not due to millennials not used to stress, but something else such as socialization to say 'any failure means you suck at life and has no future'. In past eras, university was not one of the only ways to guarantee a decent life given there were plenty of "good blue collar jobs| without college requirements. And those are largely gone now.

[–]colourful_opinion 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The topic of conversation was about clothing choices. You decided to turn it into 'polynna utopia' in general. This is pretty much a goalpost movement.

Not at all. The utopia, in this case, is that you can wear what you want, when you want, and defy social norms and business norms for dress codes without penalty. We both know that's not happening without serious stigma. Show up for that interview in a dress, as a man, and see how often you get the job. Childhood becomes a bubble where parents artificially insulate those kids from the stigma, only to have it show up in adulthood. It's like telling your kids about Santa only to have to retract and admit it's you as parents when they hit their Tween years. Why not just avoid the lie to begin with and let the kids know the truth?

Wishing that this kind of stigma didn't exist is utopic. As long as humans operate in groups, they will have group norms. They aren't going away, any time soon.

[–]EphemeralChaos 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I agree that she did state that she would offer him dresses and ballet, but if you kept reading you would see that she said "In hopes of having a child that's a better version of me" This shows that she thinks her son coming out as a steretypical boy will not fulfil her hopes, or in other words dissapoint her. I think if she has a daughter next time she will show just how sexist she really is. I hope this boy turns out to be great and show his mother how wrong she was for thinking that only her perfect idea of gender would be better than she is. In fact. I think that the less she messes with the kid the more likely he will be better than her.

[–]orangorilla 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I did read to the end. To the very end, where she said she realized she wouldn't be getting a do-over. Because the plans she had for her daughter were shattered, and justly so.

This is a person who saw her own sexism and is wrestling with it, she wants desperately to live through her child, but realizes it is wrong at the same time.

But I agree though, the less she messes with the kid, the worse he will turn out. That's generally the reason why raising your child to be something doesn't really work.

[–]EphemeralChaos 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

She is willing to admit that she wanted a girl that fitted with her idea of what a girl is supposed to be like and that that is wrong.

Sadly she is not willing to admit that she still hates boys and not only that but she is very directly saying that she hopes the boy doesn't become like most boys and more like a girl. Because she like a spoiled child still wants a girl and can't deal with the fact that she is not getting one.

[–]orangorilla 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Oh, no doubt she'll fuck him up. Though I don't think she'd do anything close to forcing him into something he didn't like.

If she's fucking up, it's bound to be in a way where she encourages the activities she wants him to do, and actively discourages the more boyish thing.

But she shows promise, she's got a shred of introspection, and that glow could be kindled, and allow her to actually get some perspectice.

[–]EphemeralChaos 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agreed, it's just amazing that she is unable to see that she clearly hates boys.

[–]sexyjeremypharoahwiz 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

She did say that she's already bought him pink ballet shoes with little bows on them.

[–]orangorilla 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh yes. But did you never get offered a try at an interest when you were young, only to find out it wasn't for you?

I'm not doubting she'll screw him up. But I don't think she'd try and force him into anything he clearly didn't like.

[–]192873982 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Or, you could just bet on the 98$ (actually I am sure it's more like 99.5%, but it doesn't matter) and then later try to detect if the child doesn't like it. Children are honest, they will tell you.

[–]orangorilla 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

Sure, I'd say the detecting if they like it is keeping the options open. Important thing is that we agree parents shouldn't put down mandates about what their kids should like.

Edit: forgot a word

[–]192873982 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Well, keep the options open is not wrong, but ignoring the probabilities is stupid. If we raised all the children gender neutral and wait for them to decide what they want, they may be less happy. Result: we have not 99% children that are less happy and 1% that are a little happier. And that is ignoring societal component that would probably also add to the unhappiness of the 99%.

The majority is the most important, no matter what leftists dream about. If we want to optimize the sum of happiness of all people in our country, 90% are 9 times as important as the whole rest together. This means we would chose making the 90% 1 unit happier each over making the 10% 8 units happier. That of course is a problem for too small minorities, because their cerncerns may become irrelevant in relation to the majority. That's the reason we need multiple countries in the world, because that way we could avoid having too small minorities. In theory that is. In practice, people just didn't get that system and now as a result, we have tiny minorities everywhere all over the world.

[–]orangorilla 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

If we raised all the children gender neutral and wait for them to decide what they want, they may be less happy.

May be.

But I'm not talking about gender, I'm talking about placing your child in a box with a pre decided choice of interests, whether decided from class, or gender, or whatever.

As for minority vs majority, I agree that the majority shouldn't be made less happy to cater to minorities. All I caution is that we shouldn't legally prohibit minorities from doing their minority thing unless it's actually harmful.

[–]192873982 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes, that's true. Also people forget that not pissing off the minority too much helps the majority too.

[–]orangorilla 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Good point.

[–]never_said_that 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There's no reason I can't sign him up for a class, even if it is full of little girls. The next day I went out and bought him some useless pink ballet slippers, with bows, in the hopes of having a child who is a better version of me after all.

I'll force him into girl clothes. That will give him the freedom to become exactly the gender I have chosen for him.

I think she is only partially aware of her own sexism. However, she outright admits that she is sexist against boys. In a world that rarely accepts that such sexism can even exist, I think she does deserve some credit.

No matter how evolved I thought we were, it turns out I wanted a girl, badly, and not for reasons I’m proud of. Do I want a boy who’s smarter than me? Not really. I already know plenty of men, young and old, who think they’re smarter than me.

Wow, you really are just a terrible human being aren't you.

[–]NoFuryLikeKristine 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Doesn't it seem unhealthy for a parent to want to make their child a better version of him or herself? Your children may have picked up your mannerisms, genes, and maybe some of your opinions, but they'll never be just like you. They are their own person. I feel like I've been handicapped by my parents' (especially my mom's) attempts to stifle my individuality and force me to become their idea of a perfect child.

Seems like you shouldn't have kids if you're going to treat them like that and have an unhealthy relationship with your kid from the start.

[–]mrstickman 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh yeah. I'm tempted to start a GoFundMe for the kid's eventual therapy now.

[–]dejour 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's unhealthy, but I think it's pretty common.

Narcissism.

[–]rottingchrist 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Rather the boy be aborted than be born to someone like that.

[–]WhiteThrone 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Better the boy be born and given to a loving, caring family who want children. Rather than allow this hateful bitch to 'raise' the boy an inflict her loathing upon his young psyche.

Everybody, boys and girls both, deserve a chance to grow and become happy, healthy adults. This woman seems unable to love and nurture this child ... and the child will suffer for it. Suffer immensely.

Maybe she should just fuck more less dominant, beta males; I say this with my tongue firmly planted in my cheek. Interestingly, according to this study, mammals can choose the sex of their offspring based on how the female views her mate, and the potential for their offspring to sire children. So to summarise; alpha baboon, bangs female baboon, female baboon more likely to give birth to male offpsring. Because said male issue is more likely to inherit the traits that make his father alpha. If some beta baboon gets laid, and they do occasionally, it is more likely to produce female offspring. Female offspring to beta males are more likely to breed with the alpha, because the alpha pretty much fucks all the females in the harem.

In humans, throughout the ages, only 40% of males breed, and 80% of the females have produced offspring. Source to sources here.

I don't understand the hate towards male children. I have two boys with another boy on the way. It's awesome! They are unabashedly male, boisterous, crazy, hyperactive bastards, who are going to be raised to never once apologise for being a man.

[–]SpiritofJames 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Female baboon more likely to have males

Is this more likely to give birth to males, or more likely to raise them?

[–]blahblahblah005 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Edited for clarity. More likely to give birth to males. It's been a long few days.

The term you are looking for whold be "Delta male".

[–]warsie 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

AFAIK, more females than males reproduced because the males had a higher death rate

[–]blahblahblah005 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

80% of women reproduce verses 40% of men. Maybe the higher death rate did play a, large role, but I think there is other variables at play.

I understand your sentiment but there's no way to take away that universal right without going down the eugenics path. Not to mention the massive invasion in personal liberty let alone what to do in unwanted pregnancies (and those that will be claimed to be unwanted).

[–]5th_Law_of_Robotics 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Hopefully she'll get over herself and realize that having a child shouldn't be about having a miniature version of yourself so you can have a redo for all your failures.

[–]chavelah 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Of course she will. This kind of attitude is incredibly common in first-time expectant parents of both sexes. Realizing your error BEFORE your child is born is actually getting off to a great start

We've always had cases of "gender disappointment" with young parents. The fact that it is now a subject for books and articles and endless message board posts, rather than something a person talks about with their parents or grandparents or older sibling and has their delusion pointed out to them and sorts their shit out promptly, THAT'S what I worry about. That's probably why the author's husband was not thrilled to find a book on gender disappointment in their house - people who feel the need to read/write books like that aren't emotionally mature enough to be good parents.

[–]401InvalidUsername 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I would bet that this child will grow up with hormone blockers, because he feels like he "should've been a girl" and will be raised as a transgender girl. This is the type of disgusting behaviour common to many of these new SJW parents who use their children to push their own agenda of "acceptance", which is really anything but.

[–]user1492 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

what I truly wanted was a better version of myself.

I think that's what all parents want when they have a kid. Men want boys because they know what it is to be a boy. They can look to their dad and learn how to be (or not be) a good dad. Men generally don't know how to raise little girls because they don't have the perspective from the other side.

This brings to mind two things. First, good on this woman for recognizing her prejudices, but shame on her for thinking that her husband thought the same as her. Second, it is incredibly depressing how many women think they can raise men without involving a man.

[–]SpiritofJames 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

There's a serious lack of realizing the independent being they are bringing into the world should have their own direction and there should be support for what they chose to do.

A child is not an accessory to your lifestyle.

For a fleeting moment there I thought "Hooray! At long last, an article by a woman who's sorry she's having a boy because she knows how the deck is stacked against boys these days, right from kindergarden to uni graduation."

Then I went and stabbed myself with a pointed stick until I got better.

[–]Flasteria 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Me too. I should know better by know.

[–]SolidSpruceTop 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Here's the issue. No matter what your child can find a way to say you fucked them up in their early stages before they could think enough to make their own decisions. This woman seems like she'll fuck her child up by forcing feminine things on him. Don't worry about colors on his clothing and don't ever stop him from wanting "girly" things, but don't force him in ballet. Don't force transgenderism on anyone.

I have a good friend who said that if somehow she becomes pregnant (she's asexual) she'll only keep the child if its a boy. Kinda funny.

It's when I read articles like this that it becomes clear to me how big a loss that loss of shame has been for Western culture. The author should be ashamed of her emotions, not publicize them in an article.

[–]Clockw0rk 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What a narcissistic, sexist bitch.

I'm really starting to believe that people should be given psych evals before they're allowed to raise children.

Damaged parents result in damaged kids.

A woman in the comments wrote:

Daughters are pretty great. But sons are even better, from my experience, and I have both. The mother/son bond is a secret romance that goes on and on. My daughters are actually a pain in my ass, now that they're grown, while my son is still the love of my life. I usually keep this a secret. I'm not too articulate this morning, sorry...

I found that quite touching. There was a time when the mother-son relationship was the strongest of all relationships, even more than father-son or human-dog/cat. Perhaps nothing has changed, and she will realize the error of her ways as her son grows. But it's extremely depressing to think that modern women now regard sons as a burden, rather than the light of the world. If men have achieved all of the great advances, it was their mothers that made that possible. Please God let us end the sex wars. It is nothing but self-cannibalism.

Once we found out we were having a boy, we cringed over new visions: video games. Mud, chaos.

The horror! If the article is any indication as to this individual's parenting ability it's a shame she's having kids at all...

[–]Tmomp 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think in turning out to be a boy, this baby did himself — and any theoretical future children I might have — a huge favor. That ultrasound revealed two things: the nature of his genitalia and my sexism.

Maybe there's hope -- if she believes there is a problem with sexism.

Her experience also illustrates the importance of males' involvement in identifying, revealing, and stopping sexism.

Ah, clueless new parents. How little they know.

When reality doesn't meet expectations, disappointment is usually inevitable.

There ARE good reasons to be sadded at having a boy. Boys are dis-advanced in education, have shorter life-expectancy, more likely to be victims of crime etc.
