Question: Would home video cameras/ body cameras protect men against false allegations of rape/domestic violence? Or would having a camera running be a crime in itself during sex (ie illegal recording of private acts, sex videos). Is this a catch22?

The judge is giving her a light sentence because no one in Cyprus wants a light shone on how the case has been handled.

From the woman being questioned for hours without either a lawyer or an interpreter, from her writing a confession which is written in broken English using phrases that British people don't use, to the judge refusing to hear expert testimony provided by the defence.

They want the whole thing to blow over quickly.

This is a tricky one, I think. I can believe that Cypriot police would pressure her into retracting the statement, especially as they make so much money from British tourism.

I'd be very interested to read exactly what she said in that retraction, as well as more details from the trial. That seems unlikely to happen though sadly.

Normally I’m the one with the pitchfork but this story is pretty troubling. She had bruises all over her body indicative of rape or forced sex, but the judge refused to admit it into evidence. Also, she was questioned for several hours without the benefit of a lawyer, which is where her retraction came from.

People who falsely accuse are scum, but I’m not sure this is one of those cases

That is a staggeringly one-sided and biased article.

It doesn't mention any of the issues with the investigation and prosecution - such as:

being denied access to a lawyer
being denied access to a translator
the crime scene not being held for long enough (the room where the rape allegedly happened)
the phones not being downloaded for the men when they were arrested (which would be standard practice in just about every rape investigation)

I happen to think - as a gut feeling - that she probably has lied or exaggerated what happened. But the reality of this situation is that the Cypriot authorities completely screwed this up and ran an investigation that they should find embarrassing. As a result of such a shoddy investigation there is now forever going to be doubt towards both sides of this case. We will never know what happened for sure.

This article just skips all of the issues that have been raised - it's a hatchet job.

I'm a bit confused about this part:

In an earlier analysis of the trial arguments, Schow highlighted the weakness of the evidence against the men. A forensic pathologist testified that he found DNA traces from four of the men on her, which says nothing about whether they violated her:

DNA, however, can be left on a person’s body in any number of ways that do not include rape. They could have been deposited through contact via the man she agreed to have sex with, for example. She could have been near the men earlier and obtained the DNA traces.

I thought "DNA traces" in a rape investigation means semen. So... when they say "she could have been near the men earlier and obtained the DNA traces," do they mean it could have been a consensual gangbang? Cuz I don't think you're getting sperm on you from walking next to a guy randomly. And you'd think something about a consensual orgy would have turned up somewhere else in the investigation.

Good article except for the Brock turner stuff. This is where men’s rights activists go wrong. Are women able to falsely accuse men of rape without consequences? Absolutely but that doesn’t mean there aren’t people who are actually rape victims

We have to assume innocent until proven guilty, and put it on the accuser to prove guilt, but we need to acknowledge when someone has been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

It's laughable that the article compares this bitch to the PoS Brock Turner who got the same lenient sentence for raping an unconscious woman. I fail to see it as a legitimate comparison. Yes, he will be forever registered as a sex offender, but she didn't rape anyone, she lied about being raped. Are we saying that lying to police should carry the same sentence as rape?

I agree with the idea that false accusers should be put on the register, but lying and raping are different offences and rightly should be punished differently, even if it feels unjust.
