I was a "nice guy" - but nowhere near as extreme as the examples on the NiceGuys subreddit. Honestly, I think those examples where these guys lash out in exaggerated ways once called out on their 'niceness' are quite rare among most people, HOWEVER...

I do believe that a less extreme version of 'nice guys' exist. People who believe that being nice entitles them to sex. A LOT of people have this belief and many who do are usually nowhere near as confrontational as the examples on this sub.

Now my question is isn't "nice guy" behaviour encouraged?

When I used to bend over backwards for female friends I have to admit that a lot of my "nice" behaviour was encouraged and I was told things like:

"Never change. One day you will find a great girl. You're such a nice guy"

And it's not just me who got these types of comments. These types of comments are given a lot. The book "No More Mr Nice Guy" deals with this and how millions of men behave like this.
