It's entirely anecdotal, but there is an example here of a woman explicitly denying the importance of looks.

(Note: That video is fantastic, in my opinion, and is very well-made even if you disagree with the story it tells.)

Here are some ideas about why women deny the importance of physical attractiveness:

  • they want to seem morally superior (but why more so than men? don't men also have this desire? why do women have a greater desire in this regard?)

  • they lack introspection and therefore express the way they would think/feel in an ideal world as though it is actually the way they think/feel, without any self-insight as to the reality of the situation ("hamstering?"); the hamstering often involves a claim that XYZ traits are attractive without a recognition that these traits are attractive if and only if the looks-threshold is met

  • consciously/subconsciously, they want to keep orbiters around and these orbiters would vanish if these orbiters knew that they had no chance

  • consciously/subconsciously, they want to keep their post-Wall "beta bux" retirement-plan available (why would this require deceit unless they actually think that their future "beta bux" husband is somehow within earshot, which is incredibly unlikely? how would telling the truth possibly come back to bite her in this regard? it seems unlikely...)

  • they genuinely don't want to hurt unattractive men's feelings, so they give them a false picture with the best of intentions, even though it's not helpful for these men to be deluded

1: Do women deny the importance of physical attractiveness more than men do?

2: What are all the actual reasons that explain why women deny that physical attractiveness matters to them?

3: If a differential indeed exists, then what explains the differential between men and women in terms of denying the importance of looks?
