She drove to my place (30 min drive). The crêpe place we'd planned to walk to was closed on Sunday (I found that out shortly after I suggested it 2 days ago but didn't tell her until she arrived), so we drove to a sushi restaurant instead.

I had planned to invite her in for a minute before grabbing a bite to eat (more settings for the date), but I forgot and just ended up leading her straight from her car to mine.

  1. I hugged her when she first arrived, but otherwise there was no kino. She sat across from me at the restaurant, and I moved next to her with the line "I'm going to sit here so this doesn't feel like an interview." I found an excuse to whisper in her ear at one point, but we were still sitting far enough apart that I couldn't find any excuse to touch her.

  2. While at the restaurant, I made 3 faux pas:

    • I dropped my chopsticks more than once (I fidget a lot, especially when I'm nervous. I didn't feel very nervous, but that didn't stop me from fidgeting and dropping things.)
    • Ever had edamame? Well, I hadn't. I totally just started eating them whole. Then I had to spit out the parts of the pea pod that aren't chewable. Haha, that made me feel like such a dolt. I tried to laugh it off but it seemed like she was laughing at me, not with me.
    • While picking up the check, I splashed soy sauce all over myself and the table. I know I'm a clumsy motherfucker, but this was a record night even for me.
  3. Conversation was definitely lacking. This is a weak spot for me. All I know how to talk about is geek stuff and politics. I try to just listen to the girl talk, ask her questions, and occasionally interject my own stories, but she didn't seem to feel like talking much either, so I felt like I didn't have a lot to work with. She was very talkative when we were on the phone, though, so either I put her off from the beginning of the date or she was just nervous for her own reasons.

  4. She ordered a drink (alcoholic), but I didn't. One drink won't affect me much, but I didn't want her to worry about me driving us from the restaurant.

Even before the check arrived, she started talking about how her job requires her to get up early Monday mornings (it was only 7:30pm at the time-- we had met at 6). She offered some money toward the check, I paid a bit more than she did to cover a good tip, and we left. I asked her if she wanted to go to a nearby bar (what did I have to lose?), but she confirmed that she wanted to go home, and started babbling about how much busier her workplace is around New Years.

Truth is, I didn't really like her anyway. I found her somewhat boring, which is why I couldn't think of much to say. She also seemed kind of stuck up, which I found intimidating. Still, I'd like to get to the point where I can choose to interest someone even if they don't interest me.

Thoughts?
