Here's an interesting video of the procedure. Notice how throughout it, despite the baby's screaming, the doctor simply denies there's any pain. And then at one point, the father mentions that the doc said there would be pain relief? Yeah, this is what’s told to parents, quite often, yet its false. It's been debunked in scientific studies.

A Summary of the issue basically, a baby will suck on anything you put in its mouth because of a reflex. That doesn't mean it isn’t in pain. its like when old civil war doctors gave amputees a bullet to bite on. they weren’t actually feeling less pain, its jut if they bite a bullet, they don’t scream so much, so the doctor felt better about it. that what happens with the sugar water pacifiers. there was a study that claimed to show it worked. however, the way those researcher measured pain was by testing the VOLUME of cries, and had a nurse stand by and record her opinion of how pained the baby's faces looked. The babies who had the pacifiers didn’t cry as loud, so they claimed it was less painful. Of course, the more rational conclusion would be that if something's stuck in your mouth, you cant cry as loud. That doesnt mean you feel less pain, since nerves and the brain still work the same. Yet This passes for science in America.

And in the end, the excuse is made that they don't remember it. Problem is, they kinda do. that study showed that babies who were circumcised had stronger pain responses to vaccination months later, than those who weren't circumcised. And even the ones who had anesthesia had stronger responses, showing that it simply isn't enough.

Sexual pleasure is subjective. Circumcised women, like circumcised men, will claim that they can enjoy sex just fine—and they probably can.

Science can not easily measure subjective experience but what it can do is provide us with a framework from which to make educated claims.

The most comprehensive study ever done on penile sensitivity to actually measure said sensitivity had this to say about the difference between the intact and circumcised penis:

"The glans of the circumcised penis is less sensitive to fine touch than the glans of the uncircumcised penis. The transitional region from the external to the internal prepuce is the most sensitive region of the uncircumcised penis and more sensitive than the most sensitive region of the circumcised penis. Circumcision ablates the most sensitive parts of the penis."

(as opposed to FGM)

There are forms of female that are less invasive than male circumcision as you probably know it. Would you say that those should be allowed?

Yes and no. As I said, pleasure is subjective. There is only so much suffering or joy a person can experience and it is a bit of zero-sum game. At some point a person is just not capable of suffering any more than are already or can't possibly be happier—emotional expectations plateau and adapt to the circumstances.

A privileged Westerner with little understanding of "true suffering" in actually probably feels just as much distress when they get laid off from work as someone in a poor third world country would when their harvest is not going well even though the two are not actually comparable because the aforementioned Westerner has a much lower suffering threshold.

My explanation kind of weak but I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. You could MRI a circumcised man and woman and compare the results to intact counterparts and you'd probably get pretty damn similar results.

What the research I quoted above shows is that intact men have a much higher potential threshold for genital sensation. And it's better than that because it is not just a spike in the same kind of sensations a circumcised man might feel but completely new feelings altogether. The foreskin is erogenous yes but it is also particularly sensitive to fine touch, which goes hand in hand with findings that show the presence of meissner's corpuscles in the foreskin which are the mechanoreceptors that respond to the lowest of vibrations and give us fingertips sensitive enough to read braille.

The WHO classifies as FGM:

Clitoridectomy: partial or total removal of the clitoris (a small, sensitive and erectile part of the female genitals) and, in very rare cases, only the prepuce (the fold of skin surrounding the clitoris).
Excision: partial or total removal of the clitoris and the labia minora, with or without excision of the labia majora (the labia are "the lips" that surround the vagina).
Infibulation: narrowing of the vaginal opening through the creation of a covering seal. The seal is formed by cutting and repositioning the inner, or outer, labia, with or without removal of the clitoris.
Other: all other harmful procedures to the female genitalia for non-medical purposes, e.g. pricking, piercing, incising, scraping and cauterizing the genital area.

Of all these, only the removal of the clitoris and infibulation is more severe than the most common type of male circumcision. Any form of female circumcision were only the clitoral hood or the labia are removed have less impact on genital function than male circumcision as practiced in the US.

What other word would you prefer to use for men that have whole genitals? Personally, I find the words "uncut" and "uncircumcised" to be a lot more offensive since it implies that circumcision is the default which is not only offensive but outright wrong.

Sad to hear that, but it's worth noting that your bf had the ability to make that decision, because it wasn't taken from him.

I was circumcised as an infant, and have hated it and those who did it to me since the day I knew. Do you know what it's like when every time you shower, use the restroom, change clothes, even make love, you're reminded that you can never be whole again? do you know what it's like when you go through your youth and teen years, discovering sexuality and being reminded of that every single time? Yeah, it does some damage to some of us. I no longer speak to my parents, and never will again. I just wish they were in jail for what they've done.

The vast majority of medical organizations in the world with a policy on circumcision are outright against it. including:

Routine infant male circumcision does cause pain and permanent loss of healthy tissue. |

Australian Federation of Aids organizations They state that circumcision has "no role" in the HIV epidemic.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan has taken a position against it, saying it is harmful and will likely be considered illegal in the future, given the number of men who are angry that it was done to them and are becoming activists against it.

The President of the Saskatchewan Medical Association has said the same (link above).

The Central Union for Child Welfare “considers that circumcision of boys that violates the personal integrity of the boys is not acceptable unless it is done for medical reasons to treat an illness. The basis for the measures of a society must be an unconditional respect for the bodily integrity of an under-aged person… Circumcision can only be allowed to independent major persons, both women and men, after it has been ascertained that the person in question wants it of his or her own free will and he or she has not been subjected to pressure.”

Swedish Association for Sexuality Education published this guide that talks about circumcision, in a pretty negative way. not an official advocacy policy but it makes it fairly clear. it also talks about how the frenulum is sexually sensitive, and helps prevent infection by blocking fluid from the urethra; the frenulum is often removed in an infant circumcision, yet easier to leave intact if an adult is circumcised.

Royal College of Surgeons of England

"The one absolute indication for circumcision is scarring of the opening of the foreskin making it non- retractable (pathological phimosis). This is unusual before five years of age."..."The parents and, when competent, the child, must be made fully aware of the implications of this operation as it is a non-reversible procedure." |

it is now widely accepted, including by the BMA, that this surgical procedure has medical and psychological risks. .... very similar arguments are also used to try and justify very harmful cultural procedures, such as female genital mutilation or ritual scarification. Furthermore, the harm of denying a person the opportunity to choose not to be circumcised must also be taken into account, together with the damage that can be done to the individual’s relationship with his parents and the medical profession if he feels harmed by the procedure. .... parental preference alone is not sufficient justification for performing a surgical procedure on a child. .... The BMA considers that the evidence concerning health benefit from non-therapeutic circumcision is insufficient for this alone to be a justification for doing it. |

Australian Medical Association Has a policy of discouraging it, ad says "The Australian College of Paediatrics should continue to discourage the practice of circumcision in newborns."

Australian College of Physicians:

"The possibility that routine circumcision may contravene human rights has been raised because circumcision is performed on a minor and is without proven medical benefit. Whether these legal concerns are valid will probably only be known if the matter is determined in a court of law .....Neonatal male circumcision has no medical indication. It is a traumatic procedure performed without anaesthesia to remove a normal and healthy prepuce."|

I love that statement about human rights. it mentions that the only way to determine the validity is to ask the courts. as if it's not the job of a medical organization to take a stand as well.

Some men strongly resent having been circumcised as infants. There has been increasing interest in this problem, evidenced by the number of surgical and non-surgical techniques for recreation of the foreskin.|

A letter by the South African Medical Association said this:

The matter was discussed by the members of the Human Rights, Law & Ethics Committee at their previous meeting and they agreed with the content of the letter by NOCIRC SA. The Committee stated that it was unethical and illegal to perform circumcision on infant boys in this instance. In particular, the Committee expressed serious concern that not enough scientifically-based evidence was available to confirm that circumcisions prevented HIV contraction and that the public at large was influenced by incorrect and misrepresented information. The Committee reiterated its view that it did not support circumcision to prevent HIV transmission. We trust that you will find this in order. Yours faithfully Ms Ulundi Behrtel|

Royal Australasian College of Surgeons I like this one especially. It's a detailed evaluation of the arguments in favor of circumcision, they note that during one of the recent trials in Africa, the researchers claimed the re was no loss of sexual satisfaction. but the RACS called them out:

"Despite uncircumcised men reporting greater sexual satisfaction, which was statistically significant, Kigozi et al (2008) concluded that adult male circumcision does not adversely affect sexual satisfaction or clinically significant function in men." In general, they discuss how there's no evidence to support it.

this study shows significant harms to men's sexual ability and satisfaction after circumcision.

because to take a body part from a man when he's an infant, is to take it from him as an adult. it's irreversible. Also, I like to point out that it's an issue of men's rights in a debate, because people who defend it like to discuss infant as if there's no connection between them and adults, acting like just because he can't say no now makes it ok for someone else to make the decision, as if it MUST be decided then. when it doesn't have to be.

I've seen people argue that he probably won't decide to be circucmcised later, and that therefore, NOT circumcising is also permanent, so either decision is ok. they want to put acting and refraining from acting on the same level, when they aren't the same. in reality, the facts demand the opposite from ethics: circumcision is permanent, but leaving an infant alone is not, circumcising removes his right and ability to choose later on, and there is no necessity to circumcise a healthy infant, so human rights and ethics demands that one not act.. effectively, refusing to circumcise an infant is not even a decision to begin with, at least not on the same level with cutting because it is reversible at any time. but people ignore this.

Girl here... Honest question.

Does it make me an asshole for thinking uncircumcised is unattractive and a little...gross? Whenever I see them on gonewild they are unattractive and freak me out, but could that be on par with just another sexual preference? I have had sex with one uncircumcised male, the extra skin kinda freaked me out but I was having sex with HIM, I wasn't having sex with him because of his penis. We still had sex and the sex was still good...but I just visually was turned off by it, and any time I've seen one before or since. I wouldn't not sleep with someone because of it (if I am going to have sex with you before I see your penis, that is not enough reason to make me not want to sleep with you), I just think they are weird.

I don't plan on having kids, but if I did I don't know what I would do with it. Obviously it would be discussed with my partner, but I don't know. Is it reasonable to say I want my son to be "more attractive" and easier to clean so I would cut it off now. My only qualm with the "let him chose" is that I feel like at age 18..getting dick surgery requires more healing time, more concentration to heal and not get an erection, etc. instead of when you are a baby and less aware of it/what is going on around you...and I would rather put a baby through that than an 18 year old. But again I don't plan on having kids so I don't really think much about it...but this thread started the wheel turning.

As I stated, routine circumcision is a major issue. But FGM is more of a gender issue. FGM is a male creation designed to control women (mainly in developing countries), and Male circumcision, although it goes against our human rights, it really doesn't have the same repercussions nor is it used by women to control a man's sexuality. As a male I do see when men are oppressed and radical feminists make me want to scream, and yes circumcision is a major issue. But when you look at the world as a whole, at the countries that have the lowest HDI, it is FGM that is a much larger problem. Again, I am not saying that routine circumcision is not an issue, but globally it is not as serious, as many men prefer it. Zero women want it, but their male counterparts do it to them anyways. Just try and understand how it would feel to be a woman in an underdeveloped country, having your external genitalia removed, by men for a purpose none other than to reduce your pleasure. That is when it becomes a global gender issue.

Well, that study isn't opinion, it contains quantifiable and measurable results.

The best description I've heard, is comparing it to color-blindness. The color-blind still enjoy movies and tv (as the circumcised, sex), but some measure of the picture is missing.

The other description is a music analogy. Some people explain that if sex were any more enjoyable, their head would explode. The music analogy tries to point out that such concerns are like the volume of the music you are listening to. Having a foreskin doesn't increase the volume (would be be painful), but it can add a bass line, or a piano. It's not increasing the level of sensation, but the breadth perhaps.

But guess what! This is all besides the point, which is that each person should have control of their own body. Circumcision shouldn't happen based on aesthetic or religious reasons alone.

How is "MY BODY, MY CHOICE" so hard to understand? I'm not shaming you for being circumcised. But if you think that this is necessary to do to your son simply because it was done to you, I would simply disagree....

Additionally, an uncircumcised penis is easy to care for and keep clean, so improved hygiene is not a reason for routine circumcisions, either.

No, that isn't it. It's because of the differences between male and female circumcision. They aren't exactly the same. Female circumcision leaves the woman not only permanently scarred, but permanently damaged. She will be cut without anesthetic, being held down by family members, with an unsterilized knife or pair of scissors. Then her flesh will be sewn together with a needle and thread, or with thorns, and her legs tied together for a few weeks. Have you ever gotten urine in a wound before? Weird question, I know...but I have - after my first child was born, I had some tearing, and it burns like fire to get urine on torn flesh. These girls have to do that for weeks while their excision heals. It has been estimated that, in some areas where antibiotics are not available, as many as one in three girls die following the procedure. Other areas have a lower death rate, closer to 1 in 10. Once she is healed, only a pinhole is left through which urine and menstrual fluid have to pass. On her wedding night she usually needs to be cut open with a knife by her new husband before the marriage can be consummated. Let that percolate for a few minutes. Cut with a freaking knife, and then you're going to have sex on that nice open wound. Although they don't always use a knife...sometimes they just shove their way in.

Depending on the type of FGM that is practiced, it can also increase a woman's chances of having severe complications during and after childbirth (ever heard of an obstetric fistula? google it and prepare to be horrified, it's pretty terrible). Maternal and even infant morbidity and mortality are significantly higher among women who have been circumcised than they are among uncut women.

Male circumcision is every bit as unnecessary as FGM. It is every bit as much a violation of a baby boy's body. However, it doesn't leave him quite as crippled as FGM does. Worldwide, it doesn't cause as many deaths as female circumcision, because it is mostly less invasive (although there are people who botch it). Tommassive is right - they are not 100% the same. Pointing this out does not mean that a person cares less about men than about women, or that men are worth less, or that male circumcision is less serious. It isn't less serious; it's just as wrong to do it to a boy as to a girl. But the facts speak for themselves. Statistically speaking, FGM seems to cause even more harm.
