Does the constant Promotion of Females/Girls on TV demoralise boys?

As a teenager in the 90's, I didn't understand why my father didn't like that I loved "Married With Children", which was very popular in the early 90's.

His point was that the dad's/father's were portrayed as bumbling, failures and dolts. Like Homer Simpson, it was always the females that pulled everything together. Even though Al Bundy's wife Peg was a disaster of a spouse.

I get it all now. Yes, yes it's a problem. Most people just don't recognize it because it's just supposed to be entertainment.

But why would major media have to force an above average in reality LGBTQ representation or replace attractive models/actors with "everyday body types" if they didn't have an affect over time? They know. The general public doesn't.

I also fixed the misinformation told to my daughter about RBG being the first ever female justice. They outright lie to our children. They put down boys and put girls over and above them. Have you heard about the He-Man reboot? It's basically He-Man without He-Man.

Despite He-Man featuring heavily in the marketing and trailers, he dies in the first episode. Every episode after that Teela (a female character) is the protagonist.

Ghostbusters, Dr Who, He-Man, and apparently the next James Bond will get the same treatment (apparently JB will take a back-seat for a female character to be the lead). Instead of actually creating their own movie/TV show to feature "strong and independent female characters" (which takes effort, creativity and time), feminists are just eating up existing classics, replacing the male protagonists with females, making the females strong+independent and the males complete idiots, then shitting them back out. Then they get upset when these crappy forced-diversity reboots fail at the box office and blame it on "misogyny".

I don't have any issues with "strong and independent girl power" characters, it's the non-stop slaughtering of classic movies as well as the fact all the male characters in these movies are portrayed as either the bad guys or bumbling idiots. I don't watch any TV anymore but I can imagine it must be demoralising for guys who do especially boys.

I don't watch Hollywood movies anymore. I got tired of tropes being pushed that paint women as the strong, powerful characters because they're women, while painting male characters as dependent idiots that ruin everything, or are genuinely bad people because they're men.

I got tired of seeing women brutally assaulting men, with an emphasis on dick shots, and it being portrayed as a 'power move' for women. On the flip side, men portrayed attacking women is ALWAYS a tool to make men look bad and women look like innocent victims.

There are so many double standards I have seen in modern film I wont even bother mentioning any here.

I'm an adult male and it sure does. Take the Olympics for example, I am a die hard sports guy and actually love the Olympics. No exaggeration, 95% of stories that cross my feeds are about women. I had to actually actively look to see if our 100M Men's relay team won because ALL the news was about some girl who won... sprint rowing??

I turn on the news and it's almost all about women, I can't even relate to shit in media anymore.

Throw on top of that nearly every story about dating, relationships etc is written from the female point of view and how things effect them, I am yet to see a one covering males. The only one I saw recently was about men having ED.. and how it's so bad for women. Everything feels like it is written from the female perspective now, there is barely anything to relate to as a male when it come sot media.

It demoralises, angers and depresses me because it is fake, it is not based on any genuine motive to promote talent, provide entertainment or provide information, it is simply an attempt to pander to what they believe is the current trend and whatever they believe will encourage revenue - although I don’t understand why they insist on continuing to base coverage on a factor such as gender when it clearly isn’t acceptable as the viewing figures for BBC, ITV and C4 plummet each year, I can only surmise that someone is funding such failure - history has taught us however that deliberate, concerted bias based on certain demographics and sections of society never ends well so I live in hope.

Is important to note that is specially demoralizign when they intentionaly swap the gender of a male chatacter to be female on purpose.
If they want more females in entertaiment they should at least create new characters instead of replacing the male chacters we have thats very agressive and demoralizing.

One terrific outlier on this subject is the brilliant DARK MATTER sci-fi series where women are strong, powerful when1) they're genetically modified and 2) they're android... And if a woman is not 1 or 2, the whole crew tells them to avoid fights and stay away from violence. I often wonder if the writers did this on purpose.

Recently quit my job in public accounting. Wasn’t the reason for quitting, but we regularly had to do online trainings for ethics, workplace harassment, etc. The men in the videos were ALWAYS portrayed as being either completely brainless or being predators, meanwhile the strong black women were the superheroes who everyone was supposed to adore. I probably wouldn’t have really noticed, but it was the same theme in EVERY video.

Grew up in an era when the slogan was 'girls can do anything' which even then made me feel like by inference boys couldnt.. media these days is just an extension of that with the bonus that portrayed males are usually incapable or evil idiots... I dont think sidelining 1/2 the species in media to glorify the other is healthy for either gender.

I'm not a parent, but it might be worth pointing out that every crisis is an opportunity. If you are a parent of a boy, watching and talking about these shows is an opportunity to introduce them to the idea that television is often not representative of society, that you as viewers can subject it to analysis and criticism, and develop their viewing and critical analytical skills. As well as introduce them to the idea that television rarely, if ever, provides good role models for anybody. Talk about it with other parents who are friends and who share the same views. You can talk about the fact that viewership of TV shows and news shows is rapidly declining, precisely because the shows are sidelining the entire male gender.

If you are a parent of a girl, this is an opportunity to introduce them to the idea that television and the media also attempt to frame and corral their mindset, even if it appears to be in a positive way. You can introduce the idea to them that if most girls are brought up to have negative attitudes towards brothers, husbands and fathers, they will have problems all of their lives relating to the male gender if they follow these stereotypes.

That might be a bit much for any kid to take, but the idea is to rise above just passively accepting what is thrown on you at the screen and don't use the screen as a source of personal identity and/or self-image.

Seriously? Have you looked at the Netflix lineup. If not, take a look. It is filled with shows featuring women/girls who appear stronger (physically), smarter, more powerful, and more successful than men. If men appear in the show with them at all, they are represented as weaker or somehow damaged in all ways compared to women. If there are men in the show, they have to learn lessons about being the right kind of men.

Hollywood is a despicable piece of crap these days in the way men are represented. I feel like I have to watch a bunch of Clint Eastwood movies to get clean after watching the recent BS that TV wants us to think is entertainment.

Like look at alien's. Nobody had a problem back then with the strong female leads. She didn't make it out she was a girl. She just got on with the job and got it done and it was a great film. Thats happened a lot over the years. It stopped when feminism came alone.

Look at moden strong female leads. Typically they have to make cringy sexist remarks and step on the head of the men to "promote" them often stealing another previous male charater. Its not making them look better. It jsut simply cringy.

Same stuff is happening with netflix. Its like they are picking a cast then writing a script around it rather than writting a script then casting people into it. They have to do this in order to have the correct number of minorities in the film/TV. The story lines are all messed up compared to reality. Like when you see 3 movies in a row and the "twist" is the same the stero typically tough quarter back punk. Turns out ot be gay. Its a bit "shit" after the 3rd, 4th, 5h, occurance of this in a row. There is plenty of films which have played this stuff off perfectly in the past. However in the modern industry its just "forced" into every single script.

There becomes a point where its pushing narrative that actually quality entertainment. Ofc ourse if you raise something like this you will simply get called sexist, homephobic or what ever.... so people are shutting up. Voting with their wallet and dumping that area of the entertainment industry and moving to other things.

I’m not gonna say it’s a good show or anything (I used to like it back before the writers became hellbent on making sure it’s fans knew that they hated them) but you can see this in Rick and Morty as well.

The latest season could actually be a parody of the show it’s so bad, I remember about 4 separate occasions of them making a very specific point about how men are awful and sexist and always hold women down.

It was so on the nose I actually thought it was satire but no, literally something like “now the men have screwed everything up it’s the women’s turn to fix it and receive no credit!” - I wish I was joking.

I think it does up to a point. I think the biggest issue is that a lot of Prime time TV caters to women especially now in the days of chord cutting. My mother is someone who loved to watch all sorts of TV in the evening. I noticed some of her shows portrayed men negatively although some of them I admit were funny. I am someone who likes The Simpsons(well up to about 2002 or so plus the movie) and I admit I find Homer to be hilarious however I do acknowledge that he is a poor role model in the grand scheme of things. Sure you can see his redeemable qualities like being the only one who works and provides for his family and the fact he does act like a father to his kids. I also admit that I found shows like Everybody loves Raymond to be funny too.

I think besides sitcoms showing the men to be morons, it gets worse with the TV commercials with the dumb man trope. Yes these products tend to be advertised for women but it does feel demoralizing to see a married be incapable to washing his own car or holding a garden hose while watering the rose bushes his front yard and other stupid stuff. I find that to be the real demoralizer. However there is one last thing that I also think hurts men and even teenage boys growing up is how the news often reports stories on men. It's often men who commit the crime and go to jail and the news pulls no punches. If the man committed is thief and murderer and rapist, there are no filters, this said convicted man is garbage and convinces all of is this. Now if the women are convicted, you often see the news try to beat around the bush or change the language to make it sound less severe of a crime. For example in Montana, a women took a machete and held it up against her ex boyfriend's throat and forced him to have sex with her. By definition that was a rape and yet the news reported it as a sexual assault.

So the main point is that it just doesn't stop at promoting women in TV, it's just how at all levels TV and entertainment, men are pretty much viewed as lower class a lot nowadays. With the way men are viewed, it very likely contributes to the issue of male self-esteem. We live in a day and age where men are viewed as trash in the media and I think a lot of boys are deciding that it doesn't matter so they'll just be terrible humans themselves because they're following a self-fulfilled prophecy that the TV has told them they'll end up being. I guess if there may be one glimmer of hope is that with the trend of chord cutting, it's kind of allowing a lot of boys and men be able to choose their own programming and to some degree even their own kind of ad experiences so they can break away from the traditional TV format in favor of something that may provide better and more positive messages for them.

I’m not saying it’s any better, but both of my kids give no shits about tv. When they want to be entertained, they go online where they can choose what they want all the time. They don’t follow a single tv show anymore. Zero, zilch. Only one ever watches movies. Mostly, it’s online sites that serve up content they can afford: free or almost free. YouTube pays pennies on the dollar, when they don’t just randomly demonitize their creators.

Every kid isn’t like mine, but I think there is a lot of this going on. And it has a peculiar impact. Feminists/misandrists love, love, love controlling corporations with soft power. They crawl into a spot where they can suggest, warn, and guide content toward what they think is appropriate. You notice how shows bend woke over time? They are tilted that way by an army of low value degrees that each apply a bit of institutional pressure.

Individuals are not immune, they get deplatformed, brigaded, and cancelled all the time. But it doesn’t matter, because there are so many other content creators ready to rush into the vacuum created.

It’s not the same product, content creators have hilariously low production standards. The ones that last get better, but many get bored and wander off to do something else. It’s eternal September. The most interesting bits are interesting because they’re new, not because it’s polished and blessed by the gender studies graduate that wormed their way into the network standards and practices group.

Anyhoo, there is an obvious, endemic, oppressive bias in the large corporations media creators (who have to hire on the basis of defending themselves from lawsuits instead of talent), but kids aren’t necessarily consuming their content.

Theatre, TV and media generally reflect the culture and views of the community creating theatre, TV and media, a population subgroup that is not representative of the general population. This subgroup population is not well known for it's high moral values or intellectual behaviours, but is more common known for it's highly sexualised behaviours, poor impulse control, narscissism, shallow stereotyping of male and female characters, and entrenched deviate behaviours ranging from pedophilia, coersive rape, fraud, down to minor issues like just being self-indulgent bores.

This is the culture that produces much of our current literature, theatre, TV and journalism. It's no wonder that both men and women are so offended by the lack of real-life context or common moral values in the media. This culture is contemptuous towards heteronormative family structures (anything that protects the vulnerable from exploitation) and will endorse any movement that seems to be rising in popularity, regardless of moral turbidity or logical inconsistency.

As a teenager, I often feel very hopeless when I see it. I got extremely down for a few weeks because there's no change, and nobody can hear me, and even when somebody does hear me, they act as if I am evil and hate women.. It makes me wish I were not born male because everyone hates me for it. Maybe it's because these types of programmes are mainly watched by women and they are therefore interested to make them etc? I don't know what you are talking about exactly but for example I don't see anything suspicious that yt channels about cars are 99% men for example.

If you are talking how feminists/"progressives" cry about toxic masculinity and then produce movies/cartoons with women protagonists that basically embody every toxic trait (assholery, being vulgar, doesn't care about others, violent etc etc) but somehow in female body is cool then yea. Anyone can see this it's so blatant. But I just don't watch these tv shows or movies.

As a kid growing up in the 90's, the negativity directed towards men in pop culture did have a big influence on how I saw myself and how I felt about men in general. I can't even imagine how much worse it is now. At least the negativity is easier to spot since it's usually packaged with low quality writing, direction, acting, etc.

I'm now a dad with two young boys and I will have to try to get them to understand that entertainment is different from reality. That some people try to insert ideas into a lot of movies / shows / etc. that are not healthy for my kids to internalize and use as a basis to see the world and themselves.

It's all part of teaching my kids critical thinking skills instead of accepting everything they see at face value. I hope I can spare them some of the self loathing and delayed self actualization that these negative stereotypes forced me to deal with growing up.

It's the same with American TV.

Especially if you look at Sitcoms including classics like Friends and Everybody Loves Raymond.

Joey is an idiot who can't hold a job

Chandler is an insecure man who can't let go of his past/childhood

Ross is so insecure that he can't trust his girlfriend around another man and torpedoes his relationship. Also a major baby

Meanwhile all the girls are shown as successful.

Monica is shown as a extremely successful and killer chef

Phoebe is a masseuse and can hold a job

And Rachel well pretty much has everything handed to her or she gets it by happenstance

Yes, the simpsons always made me depressed that the men, Homer and Bart, were stupid.

The problem with that show in particular is because it's a cartoon, little boys and girls watch it and they are being told what the world is like.

I don't watch tv anymore. I have a Netflix subscription and I choose what I want to watch.
