Fair warning I'm far less critical of feminism than many posters here so... don't be shocked if you see something you disagree with.

This particular notion hit me during an internet feud with someone who was deeply hurt that most men weren't feminists and that she was extremely tired of trying to explain to men that feminism isn't about hating women, it's about all these good things.

I understand where she's coming from because I think there are forms of feminism that are healthy and balanced and there are a lot of men out there who have fallen prey to misinformation.

But then I realized that the burden is almost exclusively placed on men to determine for themselves what "true" feminism is and ignore all the misandrists who might label themselves feminists. That struck me as very odd, especially because so many people will argue (correctly) in the same breath that feminism isn't a hive mind and that those bad people that call themselves feminists aren't actually feminists, my version of feminism is the right one!

It's doubly confusing to realize that the expectation is on men to "educate themselves" and somehow sift through this quagmire of no-true-Scotsmans, the vocal misandrists, the genuinely hateful, and come back to the original person and be open-minded and ready to learn.

Frankly I think that many feminists simply don't have the life experience that being a man entails. It's very easy to surround yourself with happy go lucky activists who believe the exact same stuff you do and project that on to everyone you interact with. They don't see the interactions with women overflowing with hate and anger who use feminist language as a paper thin shield for their dripping misandry. And even if they do interact with it, chances are there's just not as visceral of a reaction as if they were male. So bad feminists are even further written off.

It's just crazy to me that in an era where "burden of proof" is so important, somehow we leave the contextualization of an entire movement that at best tangentially cares about them to individual men, blaming them for failing if they internalized a belief that feminists hates men after they interacted with a million people spewing hate that proudly wear the label.
