Thatโ€™s how it first came about. It actually makes a little sense when youโ€™re bathing once a month, but cleanliness has been the same for both intact and circumcised penises for a while.

The reason itโ€™s so popular in modern times is because the king of cereal decided he would do anything to get little boys not to touch themselves, even mutilating their penises.

[โ€“]OctaviaPinfold 72 points73 points74 points 4 years ago (47 children) | Copy Link

"Cleanliness" has nothing to do with this, the foreskin evolved as a protective layer much earlier than humans had any concept of being clean. That couldn't have happened if it was enabling infections left and right.

[+]matrixislife -20 points-19 points-18 points 4 years ago (42 children) | Copy Link

Depends where you are living, getting a load of sand down between the foreskin and glans is never going to be pleasant.

[โ€“]Sininenn 50 points51 points52 points 4 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

As opposed to the pure extasy of sand rubbing against an exposed glans...

[โ€“]Temporary_Spend_3111 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I love that outlook of it๐Ÿ˜‚

[โ€“]Sininenn 10 points11 points12 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Who doesn't love getting their dick sanded...

Especially when the protective foreskin is cut off, the sand can now enter the urethra way easier! Absolute bliss...

[+]matrixislife -8 points-7 points-6 points 4 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Oh neither is good, but having sand be unable to get out is considerably worse imo, especially if you're not able to clean it out properly later on. I think that might have been the reason for routine circumcision in the first place. Nowadays of course, no justification for it at all.

[โ€“]Sininenn 25 points26 points27 points 4 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

You're acting as if underwear wasn't invented until 10 years ago...

The reason for circumcision was as a substitute for blood sacrifice of the firstborn male, and to cripple male sexuality.

It has absolutely nothing to do with sand in the foreskin. If that were true, nobody would be able to survive in sandy areas for more than a generation, yet we have thousand years old civilizations who do not genitally mutilate having done just fine.

[โ€“]Conscious_Hair_5472 -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's not correct in any way...

[+]matrixislife -8 points-7 points-6 points 4 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Yeah I'm aware of the Abraham tale, usually things are done for a good reason then gets converted into a spiritual one to support religious doctrine.

Afaik it wasn't done to affect male sexuality until Kellogs got in on the act, a few thousand years later.
I do love how definite you are, how certain that you are correct. And how willing you are to project something that might affect one or two men a year into a society-killing epidemic.

[โ€“]Sininenn 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

I was not referencing any tale, but Eric Clopper's historical research on circumcision, which he presented in his play - sex and Circumcision, an American Love Story.

Wait, what exactly are you accusing me here of? Your argument was that getting sand into the foreskin is unpleasant, and leads to further problems, therefore, cultures living in sandy areas - which is where the two religions outright demanding, or practicing MGM come from, would cut the foreskin off to avoid sand accumulation - which you say is an issue.

My argument was that people have used underwear for ages to prevent debris entering their genital areas, and that sand will rub way more against an exposed glans in the first place, and that there were and still are other cultures, who live in arid areas that do not mutilate male genitalia - who seem to have been fine surviving for centuries without their genitals rotting away due to infections from sand buildup.

Something you, at first, claim would be a big issue requiring widespread societal amputation of the foreskin to prevent such issue, and then switch to arguing that the very same issue is not as prevalent.

Does that sound right at all to you? And I am not saying all this to judge you or anything. I have heard the argument you used before. However I have never actually critically though about it until now - and it made me realize how it just does not make any sense - and it is yet another one of those myths regarding circumcision that cycle around...

[–]matrixislife0 points 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I'm saying that a problem that could affect a few men a year to the point where the society might say "let's find a way to deal with this" is not something where

nobody would be able to survive in sandy areas for more than a generation,

Going over the top and exaggerating a claim for the sake of winning an argument you aren't even having is a little weird. I'm not trying to argue against a ban on circumcision, I was considering the way it came to be widespread in the first place.

[–]Sininenn2 points 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Something which would affect a few men a year would not result in society saying 'let's start cutting all men's foreskins'

It is not exaggerating to claim that a society in which the entire male population has to get cut or have infected genitals impossible to reproduce with would not survive without said cutting.

Remember, it was you who claimed that it was plausibly necessary because of sand - which, as I already explained makes no sense.

[–]matrixislife1 point 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Then what would?

[–]Sininenn2 points 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I already told you what the reasons were, which you completely ignored. I also named the source of my information more than once.

[–]matrixislife2 points 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Substitute blood sacrifice. Really? I think sand makes much more sense than that.

[–]Sininenn2 points 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Okay, then. If you want to play it that way - I have taken your uninformed opinion into consideration, and weighted it against a Harvard Student's well-reaearched lecture, as well as common sense and logic, and my decision is that your opinion is not true.

[–]Conscious_Hair_54720 points 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Your decision on his opinion is a reflection of your stupidity, you are entitled to have an opinion and so is he, "my decision is you are wrong" is not an argument...

[–]Sininenn0 points 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Right, trusting a well researched argument over one dude's inconsistent and illogical argument is 'my stupidity'.

Please, keep your opinion to yourself next time.

[–]Conscious_Hair_54720 points 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I said that deciding that someone is wrong because you disagree with them is your stupidity, i wont keep my opinion to myself because people like you don't keep their opinions to themselves.

[โ€“]CedarWolf 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago* (12 children) | Copy Link

I have to ask: do you actually have foreskin, or are you just making assumptions? Because you seem to have no idea how a foreskin actually works.

I can run around all day with a bit of toilet tissue in my foreskin by accident and never notice it, and cleaning it out is laughably easy. Furthermore, I used to live on the coast and have been to the beach or played in the sand hundreds of times, yet never once have I accidentally gotten sand in my foreskin. The only time I've ever really gotten anything besides toilet tissue caught in my foreskin is because I intentionally put it there, and most things will just rub into a little ball or oval which you can remove later.

It's not like people are shoving bits of glass in there.

Edit: I should note here that the foreskin naturally lubricates itself, and if something does happen to get caught in it, the thing just rubs into a little ball and falls right out. It's not like the foreskin is hungrily eating up all the dust and pocket lint it can find, it works to protect the glans by keeping it shielded.

All these people who freak out about 'but what if something gets caught under there?' have clearly never had a foreskin or read about how they function.

[+]matrixislife -7 points-6 points-5 points 4 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

It's terrible when you make assumptions about other people, you can be so so wrong. Answers are yes, no, and it's actually part of my job.

You're showing a lack of understanding there, at the beach you're in and out of water a lot. In the middle of a desert in a sandstorm pre BC you couldn't stop to get something out of your underwear, assuming you had any, so it's quite likely to stay there for a few hours or even days. More than enough time to start off an infection, back in the time when there were no antibiotics available.

It's funny you say

It's not like people are shoving bits of glass in there.

when we are talking about sand.

[โ€“]michaelbleu 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Its terrible the way youโ€™re talking to people

[โ€“]matrixislife -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

In between getting called an idiot and being downvoted for a reasonable pov, it can get irritating. I haven't resorted to name calling, yet I'm the one who gets told off for the way I'm talking to people?

[โ€“]michaelbleu -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Youโ€™re passing off your experience as the only way and ignoring concensus, just because you experience things a certain way doesnโ€™t mean you can throw all opposing points of view out the window, very arrogant

[–]matrixislife1 point 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I'll happily ignore concensus opinions when they are flat wrong. The opinion the earth was flat, or the moon was made of cheese, or the sun revolves around the earth are examples of incorrect concensus opinions. This is by no means as significant as those, but then again I'm not an astronomer, I'm a nurse, so this falls into my area of work.

Btw, do you know what the main composition of sand is?

[โ€“]CedarWolf 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

It's terrible when you make assumptions about other people, you can be so so wrong.

Which is how I feel about your comments when you lie about foreskins and sand and other detritus.

it's quite likely to stay there for a few hours or even days.

Lol, what? Dude, cleaning out your foreskin is not difficult. The foreskin naturally lubricates itself and anything inside it will roll around until it falls out. That's how foreskins work. Did you break yours somehow?

Even when I've been deployed somewhere or I've been away camping or I've been somewhere I don't have ready access to a shower, the foreskin generally takes care of itself. And when it doesn't, you just slide it back, wipe it off, and you're fine.

Hell, in a pinch, you can pinch the tip closed, pee into it like a little balloon, and then release it, letting your own urine wash it out. Literally everyone with a foreskin figures this stuff out in grade school. A foreskin is so easy to maintain, you can forget about it for years at a time.

For example, the last time I ever intentionally put anything in my foreskin was over two decades ago, when I put a little cinnamon in it to see how it felt. It started as a pleasant tingling and became unpleasant very quickly, so I went and rinsed off with water and I was fine. No itching, no burning, no bullshit.

[โ€“]matrixislife -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

In the middle of a desert in a sandstorm pre BC

Sorry, but if you cba to read what's written and just reply to what you think is there, then there's no point trying to talk to you.

[โ€“]CedarWolf 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You're showing a lack of understanding of basic biology, which is why I suspect you don't have a foreskin and are just making shit up.

[–]matrixislife0 points 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Yes, I have a foreskin, yes I have had a previous operation on it due to an infection, and yes, I've been a registered nurse for over 30 years dealing with a hell of a lot of foreskin problems over that time.

That's what I meant about you making assumptions.

[–]CedarWolf0 points 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Then how do you not understand how a foreskin functions?

[–]matrixislife0 points 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Why do you assume I don't? Actually, never mind. You can continue on with your baseless assumptions, you aren't hearing what I'm trying to say so off you go.

[โ€“]Imightbenormal6 points 4 years ago [recovered] (10 children) | Copy Link

I have never had sand between my head and foreskin.

Idiot.

[โ€“]matrixislife -4 points-3 points-2 points 4 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

You're lucky then, it isn't pleasant. Almost as bad as grit under the eyelid.

[โ€“]Sininenn 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

That's why our eyes have eyelids, to prevent grit entering into the eye, as well as tear ducts, which flush out small debris.

Similarly, the foreskin prevents small debris from entering and rubbing against the glans, and produces mucus which also flushes out dead skin cells, bacteria, dust and small debris.

The body evolved both for a reason...

[โ€“]matrixislife -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

It's not very good at it's job then, especially considering the variety of lengths it comes in.
Doesn't matter though, the point is that it can still trap irritants, which could have been part of the reason for the invention of circumcision in the first place considering that environment.

If you don't agree that's fine. But feel free to explain why a society would come up with the idea to chop off an incredibly sensitive part of their body otherwise.

[โ€“]Sininenn 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Eyelids can, amd often do trap irritants, yet we don't cut those off.

Please watch the show I mentioned, before you make any other remarks which are factually incorrect. Once you do so, you will have all the answers to your question - which I already said in one of my first replies to your comments.

[–]matrixislife1 point 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Ok, question for you. Where have I ever argued that we should circumcise anyone? Very simple question.

[–]Sininenn1 point 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You are arguing that it is justified to do so, when it isn't.

You're reading things I am not saying.

[–]matrixislife1 point 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Since when? I'm attempting to discuss where the idea came from originally, but I've certainly never tried to justify it in modern times.

[–]Sininenn2 points 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Since your continuous efforts to justify the procedure. Even moreso, you're trying to discuss something without bothering to inform yourself on the subject, despite me providing you both the information and its source, which you continue to ignore, while all your arguments come from hearsay.

A propos point 2: Since you're asking me when you said we should circumcise anyone - as if I ever, ever claimed you did so...

[–]matrixislife1 point 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Bullshit. You obviously started commenting on this thread without reading the post itself or realising the perspective I was talking from. I've been talking this whole time about where the practise originated from, the possible reasons it might have come into existence. That you seem to think I'm trying to justify it nowadays just speaks to your failure to read in the first place.

[–]Sininenn2 points 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I started commenting in response to your comments being factually incorrect, by correcting them.

I definitely considered your perspective, as you can read in my lengthy comment entertaining it to the point of showing how it makes zero sense. If I didn't consider it at all, I would not be bringing up relevant arguments against it...

"I've been talking this whole time about where the practise originated from, the possible reasons it might have come into existence."

Yet despite me telling you you are wrong, and showing you proof why you are, you continued to defend and justify your position, hence, defending the argument you made, which, in turn, supports the procedure.

The appendix hasn't been bred out of us despite it causing infections and death. The human body isn't perfect.

[โ€“]OctaviaPinfold 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

The appendix used to have a purpose but even today it doesn't cause more harm than anything else in the human body when it misbehaves. The foreskin on the other hand still has its main purpose: to protect the most sensitive body part, and it never causes infections. Really, the only way for the foreskin to contribute to an infection is if you put your dick into things it's not supposed to be in. The human body is very adept at cleaning itself from its own secretions and those are the only internal factor people with a foreskin are more exposed to.

[โ€“]Sininenn 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The appendix still has a purpose - even if we're scientifically unaware of it.

Some hypothesise that it is a sort of breeding ground, a safe space, if you will, for gut bacteria.

[โ€“]intactisnormal 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Dr. Guest discusses through examples of the ape family how the trend of heavily innervated foreskin is a sign of evolutionary advancement from the lower primate species. It contributes to pair bonding, evolutionarily important for the male to stay and care for offspring.

[โ€“]xcheshirecatxx 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

At that moment circumcision was only cutting what was longer than the glans.

So not changing hygiene

the reason in my religion (judaism) is because both males and females arent supposed to have a wank. (Sin of onan which is mentioned later in the torah but is explained to be the reason of male circumcision as it shows a male's willingness to accept G*D's first abrahamic covenant with them as a jew.)

I would post this to r/iHaveSex, but youโ€™re talking about masturbation

[โ€“]Sininenn 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I once read an analysis of that tale, and its author explained that the reason was not that he masturbated, but that he did not impregnate his brother's widow.

Turns out, what he actually did was pull out, in order not to impregnate her.

"When Onan had sex with Tamar, he withdrew before he ejaculated and 'spilled his seed on the ground' "

"Onan's death was retribution for being "evil in the sight of the Lord" and disobeying a direct order from the Lord by being unwilling to father a child by his widowed sister-in-law."

Quick google sauce: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onan

[โ€“]uno_reversoo 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

ah ok gotcha its just on Rabbi Sack's commentary he notes that masturbation is a repeated offence in the Torah (Onan from memory MAY have done it?) And G*D says it goes against the original covenant which is i believe the BASIS to the argument. I could however be wrong.

[โ€“]Heterodynist 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think if I was to be circumcised with a sharp stone, the way they did in ancient Jewish times, I would be MORE likely to rub my penis, rather than less likelyโ€ฆif only to try to feel something through the unevenly healed scar tissue.

I know Iโ€™m exaggerating a bit, and Iโ€™m actually a non-Jewish fan of Judaism as a religion. I see many of its finer points. My only complaint is that the traditional rules of Judaism sort of went through a period of being debated and formalized and then set down in โ€œthe book,โ€ but why is that not a process that can ever be repeated? Why canโ€™t rabbis of many international synagogues come together and have a conference, just as they did in so-called Biblical Times, to create new rules?

Iโ€™m not suggesting they would vote to do this, but it seems many people I know who are current dedicated members of the Jewish faith, are nonetheless not Orthodox. I think the feeling of many of them is that the ancient rules of Judaism were established at a time when much of their contemporary life wasnโ€™t as it is today. Judaism can be a very practical religion, from my understanding, and it seems like Jews might consider having a set of modernized rules. Given that the rules were made at the time with the thought of being practical, rather than religiously correct.

[+]Kinexity -9 points-8 points-7 points 4 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Nope. Abraham is plausible and would live around 1700BCE. IIRC oldest parts of the Bible are dated at 1300BCE so 400 years of spoken propagation is not impossible. The Flood story is assumed false with closest similar event would be the flooding of Black Sea through Bosporus strait but it's a stretch by far.

This is deeply disturbing. A childs health and safety should come before any religion/practice/tradition. They should be able to reach an age where they can consent without pressure from parents or anything else.

[โ€“]antgamingx 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[โ€“]TheDwiin 34 points35 points36 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

[โ€“]Potato-with-guns 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I donโ€™t like removing such a vital piece of skin but it should always be optional, not required, not impossible, and only by a consenting adult or if the child has health problems because of it.

[โ€“]Jethr0Paladin -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

If it was a vital piece of skin, it wouldn't be removed.

It's clearly not vital. Try again, antisemitic.

[โ€“]CptSandbag73 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

antisemitic

What a ridiculous assumption and accusation.

http://intactwiki.org/wiki/Jewish_Circumcision

Do some reading. The original Hebrew practice of circumcision, โ€œMilah,โ€ was decidedly NOT the same as it is today in the West. It used to be just the removal of the tip of the foreskin, leaving plenty of protection for the glans while preventing the rare symptom of phimosis (an inability to retract the foreskin from around the glans.)

The current practice, โ€œPeri'ah,โ€ from which the Western medical practice was modeled, was instituted much more recently (1800 years ago, ish) as a vindictive practice to prevent Jewish men from being able to look like their Gentile peers in public baths and sporting settings by restoring their foreskins.

vital

Also, the foreskin is vital to preserve the sensitivity of the glans. The original Torah practice still retained enough skin to protect the glans, but when a man is missing the entire foreskin, fully exposing the glans, the glans keratinizes over time, which negatively affects sensitivity and pleasure during sex. So not literally vital for life, but itโ€™s pretty darn nice to have if you want your penis to work the way it was designed.

[โ€“]Potato-with-guns 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Have you ever had teeth pulled?

[โ€“]Potato-with-guns 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was using a more common example and I know it is different, however some places encourage female genital mutulation, which is extremely similar.

[โ€“]basefx 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

By your standard, any anatomy cut from a girl's genitals wasn't vital?

[โ€“]sparetosser2018 14 points15 points16 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

100% this. If an adult wants to get it done, or it's deemed medically necessary, then fine, but it should not be done to a minor, and should not be done without that person's permission.

It serves no purpose, damages the functioning of the penis, can cause major issues (like any surgery can) including death by infection and/or blood loss, is non-consenual and irreversable.

[โ€“]jadedyoungster 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

This isnโ€™t true, I had to have a circumcision due to repeat urinary tract issues, and my for skin was too tightly wound and I would suffer from inflammation as a child.

I'm not saying the doctors were wrong in your case, but there are cases in America where doctors prescribe circumcision too soon, or even try to forcibly retract the foreskin and cause the damage that leads to inflammation and UTIs.

Again, not saying that happened in your case specifically, but given that we hear about those cases a fair bit, that might be where the commenters are coming from when they disagree with you.

[โ€“]shofofosho 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The studies behind those claims have literally been debunked, that's why they are refuting it. Besides, the incorrect health benefits claimed are not substantial enough to warrant mutilating babies, the percentage changes are miniscule. giving all girls double mascectomies would help prevent breast cancer, but we don't do that now do we?

It's different if circumcision is performed due to medical necessity, a majority of male children do not need their foreskin removed for any reason and it's more likely to cause issues than it would've been to have left it alone until they are old enough to decide for themselves if they wish to be circumcised or not.

Preventative healthcare is standard practice and the most effective form of healthcare. It's true the child cant consent, but since they cant consent to any medical procedures before 17, I dont see a problem with parents making a decision with proven health benefits in the long term, yet zero proven negative side effects.

[โ€“]shofofosho 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Except it isn't preventing much of anything, just mutilating. Not only are the health benefits spurious or outright lies, but they are also irrelevant. "Reduces transmission of STDs". Cool. Babies don't have sex so there's no reason they can't choose to get the procedure when they are adults. I don't know how dumb you have to be to think that ripping off skin, which is full of nerves and protects the glans, fused to the head of the penis won'thave negative side effects. See Europe as a continental example of why you are wrong about it being necessary.

Toenails can become ingrown and infected. Would you claim that pulling out all toenails (without anesthetics) is valid preventative medicine? Mammographies on all newborn girls to prevent breast cancer?

There has been no comprehensive study on the number of complications caused by routine circumcision and the number of issues from having a foreskin versus not to even begin to say if there is possibly enough benefit to justify all the deaths caused by infant MGM.

Try getting a masters in a science before arguing that a single-author paper that is a technical report (not a peer review) is somehow more credible than a widely accepted peer reviewed report.

Thereโ€™s always a few outlying researchers for every topic, thatโ€™s how the scientific method and peer review works.

I did ignore a Reddit post, yes. Why wouldnโ€™t I? Shouldโ€™ve said it linked to other things or posted the actual links.

But like the Reddit post, you can track down the peer reviewed papers that were summarized in the CDC report.

If there is true scientific debate on the topic, so be it. Iโ€™ll still trust peer review that simply monitored case studies vs peer review that attempts to prove its own hypothesis (usually a taboo practice).

The CDC isnโ€™t perfect, every scientific authority is prone to mistakes and they got weirdly political with Covid. But I donโ€™t see the politics here. There is a reason they chose the research I linked over yours, and I am going to assert that their opinion on the topic is better than either of ours.

Nice example of appeal to authority fallacy.

BTW you are not arguing with me, you are arguing with plethora of scientific literature against circumcision. And almost every reputable non-US medical agency:

Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) (2015) The CPS does not recommend the routine circumcision of every newborn male. It further states that when โ€œmedical necessity is not established, โ€ฆinterventions should be deferred until the individual concerned is able to make their own choices.โ€
Royal Dutch Medical Association (KNMG) (2010) The KNMG states โ€œthere is no convincing evidence that circumcision is useful or necessary in terms of prevention or hygiene.โ€ It regards the non-therapeutic circumcision of male minors as a violation of physical integrity, and argues that boys should be able to make their own decisions about circumcision.
The Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) (2010) The RACP states that routine infant circumcision is not warranted in Australia and New Zealand. It argues that, since cutting children involves physical risks which are undertaken for the sake of merely psychosocial benefits or debatable medical benefits, it is ethically questionable whether parents ought to be able to make such a decision for a child.
British Medical Association (BMA) (2006) The BMA considers that the evidence concerning health benefits from non-therapeutic circumcision is insufficient as a justification for doing it. It suggests that it is โ€œunethical and inappropriateโ€ to circumcise for therapeutic reasons when effective and less invasive alternatives exist.
Expert statement from the German Association of Pediatricians (BVKJ) (2012) In testimony to the German legislature, the President of the BVKJ has stated, โ€œthere is no reason from a medical point of view to remove an intact foreskin from โ€ฆboys unable to give their consent.โ€ It asserts that boys have the same right to physical integrity as girls in German law, and, regarding non-therapeutic circumcision, that parentsโ€™ right to freedom of religion ends at the point where the childโ€™s right to physical integrity is infringed upon.
Danish Medical Association (DMA) (2020) Citing lack of consent of the child and his right to self-determination, along with a lack of health benefits which thus does not justify the risks of complications, pain, and loss of normal anatomy, the DMA concludes: โ€œFrom a medical and medical ethics perspective, the Danish Medical Association believes that the current practice of circumcising boys without a medical indication should cease.โ€

Antisemitism in the United States

Antisemitism in the United States has existed for centuries. In the United States, most Jewish community relations agencies draw distinctions between antisemitism, which is measured in terms of attitudes and behaviors, and the security and status of American Jews, which are both measured by the occurrence of specific incidents. FBI data shows that in every year since 1991, Jews were the most frequent victims of religiously motivated hate crimes, according to a report which was published by the Anti-Defamation League in 2019. Evidence suggests that the true number of hate crimes against Jews is underreported, as is the case for many other targeted groups.

And the reality is that condoms protect against HIV way better than medically unethically cutting off a piece of flesh based on flawed and ideologically tainted studies.

Besides, the foreskin contains cells designed to neutralize the HIV virus. How does cutting the foreskin help prevent HIV, when it removes these cells, as well as jncreases friction leading to higher risk of exposure?

[โ€“]Jacksonorlady -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Itโ€™s not just HIV but a whole host of infections. Also, Id get circumcised weekly if it meant not using condoms anymore lol

Last part is a joke obviously (married, condoms are out), but I actually would take the preventive care over having to use a tool every time I have sex to achieve the same purpose.

[โ€“]Sininenn 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

No, circumcision definitely does not prevent HIV, nor any other virus or bacteria.

You can, and do contract HIV during unprotected sex even when circumcised, as is evident by the rates of HIV and circumcisions being higher in US populations, and in Africa, than in Europe.

There is preventative care which protects you from contracting HIV, which does not require you to mutilate your genitalia - which, like I said, does not prevent you from contracting HIV anyway. That care is called PrEP, and it actually protects you from HIV.

[–]Jacksonorlady0 points 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You are really focused on HIV and ignoring all the other things. There is a Redditer commenting in here how he got an infection and seems pretty irritated people donโ€™t believe him.

Either way, Iโ€™m gonna take peer reviewed studies that were implemented into CDC policy over a Reddit comment section. Nothing on here has lead me to believe that the CDC is dead wrong on this.

They get weird over politicized topics like Covid, but in general medical advice they are pretty sound. These is an abundance of evidence that says it does prevent some of the other bacterial infections you seem to completely deny

[–]Sininenn1 point 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Like I said before, infections can and should be treated with antibiotics.

For comparison, women get way more UTIs, and no health organization recommends cutting off their genitals to prevent them.

You might want to look at what European health organizations recommend, instead of taking my word for it. Or, at the very least, read some criticism of thr CDCs guidelines, of which there are many, as they are definitely not the ultimate, infallible authority.

Well, circumcision may prevent infections of the foreskin... Just like beheading prevents migraines and lobotomies prevent using the brain fully...

[–]Jacksonorlady0 points 4 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Antibiotics are terrible for you and only for use when symptoms are severe enough. They kill people every day. So preventive measures still seem better to me. Didnโ€™t we start this convo with someone who had to do it for medical reasons?

Iโ€™d rather get it over with than run into that or take more antibiotics in my life then a otherwise would have.

And come on with that last analogy. Both of those would kill your ass (lobotomy worse than death). Itโ€™d be more like cutting out a tumor rather than shrinking it chemically. Or amputating an infection

As I said before, circumcision does not prevent HIV, or infections. Condoms and proper hygiene do...

No, we didn't. We started it because you came here to claim It is not an issue, yet you continue to argue with me...

You're acting like antibiotics are worse than literally mutilating your genitals. Besides, you don't eat them like tic tacs and you only use them when you have a bacterial infection. There are even creams which don't flush your entire body...

The foreskin is not a tumor, though..It is a functional and important human body part.

For some men the difference between having and not having a foreskin might be minor. It doesn't matter, the real point is that it's done without your consent. honestlyโ€ฆi donโ€™t see whatโ€™s wrong with thisโ€ฆ Iโ€™m from an asian country and when I was 6, 7 years old I got circumcised the same way. Itโ€™s good for your health, is it???

[โ€“]hailtotheking999 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, it's not good for your health. Pretty much all of Europe thinks circumcision is bad and in the United States doctors make extra money for doing the circumcision and then sell the clippings to skin care companies.

[โ€“]basefx 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Would it be considered wrong for someone to nonconsensually touch and sever the prepuce from a healthy 30 year old person's genitals?

[โ€“]nacho-chonky 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nope the so called โ€œbenefitsโ€ are basically itโ€™s easier to keep clean... if your not cleaning your penis then thatโ€™s a personal hygiene problem not a foreskin problem.... not to mention the laundry list of risks associated with circumcising. And the issue with the complete lack of consent on an extremely violating surgical procedure

I have 2 questions.

  1. Where is this located?

  2. Whatโ€™s bad about circumcising?

[โ€“]GiveBackMyRidgedBand 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Loss of erogenous tissue

[โ€“]YoGGi_Le_Tulpa 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Performing mutilation on (not consenting) children is usually considered "bad" by sane people

  1. Almost everyone knows the answers about that. I am sure some mod could post you the answers

[โ€“]Mikeferdy 21 points22 points23 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

  1. Removal of healthy tissue from a pre-pubescent boy who doesn't understand the implication of such surgery is generally a big no-no.

The foreskin acts as a mechanical lubricant during intercourse/masturbation, thus allowing safer intercourse/masturbation in the absence of lubrication.

The foreskin is also a sensitive dermal organ that is similar to the tips of fingers. Removal of those deprive a person of the full experience of sexual intercourse/masturbation. Imagine having hands but the skin of your fingertips removed.

And all these are done before the boy is capable of understanding what he will be missing thus can be considered exploitative.

Believing in big daddy in the sky is no excuse.

[โ€“]intactisnormal 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The foreskin is the most sensitive part of the penis. (Full study.)ย

Also watch Dr. Guest discussing how the foreskin is heavily innervated, the mechanical function of the foreskin and its role in lubrication during sex, and the likelihood of decreased sexual pleasure for both male and partner.(for ~15 min)

What's bad about unneccisarily touching and cutting a healthy nonconsenting 30 year old's person's genitals that couldn't be applied to this situation?

[โ€“]No-Satisfaction-2320 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

  1. It rarely has any health benefits, it can lead to serious issues (people have actually died from the procedure) and the worst thing is that they're doing it to children who can't consent to it.

[+]OkAccountant2598 -61 points-60 points-59 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Why couldn't they have done this when the kid was a baby. I'm sure those kids in the picture were born in hospitals, even in China.

[โ€“]03Randomguy 45 points46 points47 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It is never ok to cuts childrenโ€™s genitals. Also this is most likely the Philippines not china.

[โ€“]Sininenn 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You literally have bacteria everywhere in and on your body.

Your mouth is full of them, so is your belly button, your ears, your nose, your anus, your skin and its creases and the entire digestive tract is full of bacteria.

[โ€“]YoGGi_Le_Tulpa 10 points11 points12 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Do you not understand how bacteria works? Itโ€™s literally everywhere, tons of it in your mouth and guts and all over your skin, not to mention the mites.

[โ€“]GiveBackMyRidgedBand 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You still have bacteria in your penis. What you donโ€™t have is all the nerve endings that were located in the foreskin.

[โ€“]Fearless-File-3625 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It is not a choice if parents make it.

[โ€“]bahdboi -4 points-3 points-2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Parents' make most decisions for their children. Kids can't make serious decisions. So relax about that. Enjoy your foreskin, and leave those who want to cut theirs off

[โ€“]Fearless-File-3625 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Kids are not little slaves to their parents, they can't whatever they want with their kids. Parents have to have decisions that is in the best interest of the kid, circumcision is clearly not.

By your logic, parents should be allowed to amputate the limbs of their newborns.

leave those who want to cut theirs off

"those" never had the choice to choose whether they want to cut or not.

[โ€“]shofofosho 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't think you are hearing yourself. You say leave those who want to cut theirs off. The baby isn't CHOOSING to cut its foreskin off, that's the problem. They literally cannot choose to "enjoy their foreskin" because the parents chose to mutilate them.

[โ€“]intactisnormal 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

or put your child through it

The standard to intervene on someone else's body is medical necessity. The Canadian Paediatrics Society puts it well:

โ€œNeonatal circumcision is a contentious issue in Canada. The procedure often raises ethical and legal considerations, in part because it has lifelong consequences and is performed on a child who cannot give consent. Infants need a substitute decision maker โ€“ usually their parents โ€“ to act in their best interests. Yet the authority of substitute decision makers is not absolute. In most jurisdictions, authority is limited only to interventions deemed to be medically necessary. In cases in which medical necessity is not established or a proposed treatment is based on personal preference, interventions should be deferred until the individual concerned is able to make their own choices. With newborn circumcision, medical necessity has not been clearly established.โ€

To override someone's body autonomy rights the standard is medical necessity. Without necessity the decision goes to the patient themself, later in life. Circumcision is very far from being medically necessary.

If an adult wants to circumcise themself, they are absolutely free to do so.

Circumcision is wrong...but this is some odd justification...not that you need any other than full body autonomy...
