Beyond the germs issue (so put the whole lid down) is the night time pee issue.

Who cares about percentages and shit. Only women face the nightmare scenario of groggily going to the bathroom in the middle of the night and not noticing the seat is up, and getting bare ass on cold porcelain of even going part way into the bowl.

So fucking leave it down if there is a woman you love around to prevent this scenario.

The majority of the time it is used down: 100% of the time by women and perhaps 25% of the time by men. So it makes more sense for the default position to be down in a mixed-sex household.

However, if there are more males than females in the household, the situation changes.

Normally men want it up and women want it down. When we have to make sure its always up or always down its too disadvantageous to one gender and too advantageous to the other. Example lets say if we decide to keep the toilet seat down, the the man has to put it up before his business and put it down after his business. But woman don’t have to switch.

Instead we can say that let each switch however each wants and leave it at that. Example if male wants it up, he’ll switch it up and leave it at it. Then the female puts it down and leave it that way. So one switch each which is optimal.

Put the seat AND lid down every time you use the toilet. Like wtf. Why is this still a debate? Put the lid down so when you flush, it contains all the bacteria, etc that gets ejected when you flush.

I live alone so I do whatever. But if I have company or at my parents house or something, seat down. Seat always down when women are there.

Me and my sister grew up sharing a bathroom. I always left the seat down since that’s what I was taught growing up.

It doesn't sound very difficult to start adding one more switch next to the light switch for the restroom. That switch would control the seat and the lid.

If you don't have a pissoir to use and do not sit down on the toilet seat to pee at home, you are an animal. It doesn't matter if you are signle or living together with a partner. Piss in the sink if you want to, but holy fuck, what makes you think it's a good idea to stand while pissing in a toilet made for sitting?

I purchased a smart toilet that does it all for me. Outside of that, I put both the seat and the lid down. If I presume there's no lid and it's a question of just the seat up or down, then to me it doesn't matter. Anyone else is just as capable of pushing the seat down as I am of lifting it.

Consider the possible hazards of nighttime use as well. If the seat is down, it might just get splashed with some pee. If the seat is up, someone might fall in.

But personally, I say close the whole lid. Especially if you’re flushing a shit. Some toilets in particular tend to spray everywhere.
