*I’m specifically asking about heterosexual men and women’s views of each other, but would love to hear considerations for all sexualities/genders. Thanks

For an unattractive woman, there is this assumption that her unattractiveness is objective. Amongst the human characteristics available, youth and beauty are required and must be honored by her. There is a ‘path’ for her to exit (‘don’t be fat’, ‘wear makeup’), and she seems understanding of this. She may not like it, but will resign herself to her position.

To an unattractive man, his unattractiveness is always a debate. It’s less to do with his ability to gain women’s attention, and more to do with women’s standards of attractiveness. Because he can’t grow or change his face shape, his ‘path’ (‘dress better’, ‘be more social/interesting’, ‘talk to women more’) isn’t real. He is unattractive, BUT doesn’t deserve to be seen that way.

Both parties are not getting what they want.

Why can men be trusted to determine a woman’s value, but men can’t honor the value women prescribe back? Why does the male gaze matter here if the female gaze doesn’t matter then?

Edit: I wanted to clarify what I mean by unattractive. It is the state of getting your intended reaction from your intended audience. It really has very little to do with beauty, considering how not ugly a person could be and still be lonely.
