I've spent considerable time in Japan... The prevalence of groping and harassment on the trains was to the extent that the need for a safe space is not all that far-fetched. As an MRA the question then becomes not "should this exist," but instead "should there be an equivalent thing for men".*

But for me, the answer to that question really doesn't matter in the context of this post. The guy in question seems like a fucking douchebag. If you go to another country and purposefully provoke, proclaim yourself enforcer of their rules, violate numerous rules, and purposefully make others uncomfortable, then you're an asshat who's playing stupid games and deserves to win stupid prizes. I have no tolerance for these 'influencers' or live streamers or whatever. They're parasites.

(*Actually I think the safe space idea is really just a bandaid, a way to avoid the *real* question, which is how to change Japanese culture that seems to engender and tolerate this behavior... but I digress.)

As long as you have women-only X, you can be sure nothing will be done about improving the same thing related to men, or men's position regarding this.

A good number of examples are also bathrooms in a number of clubs where you can see disproportionate investment and effort to keep women's space in perfect conditions, unlike men's. A much better and less "cheap" example would be prison system, treatment of prisoners, abuse, rape and violence within these facilities that disproportionately affect men.

You can also look into historical examples of i.e. occupations where men worked exclusively, by some miracle. A pinnacle of workers rights and safety abuse in Medieval age were mines and mining industry, along with sailing. You'll notice that both of these historically banned women from being employed as well - and conditions were just about the same until 19th century when women were introduced. In fact, in a number of places they introduced and then banned women from entering certain occupations, citing this and that - but realistically the reason was solely about working conditions and desire to NOT change anything.

In this light, I always see removal of "gender restrictions" as a good thing. You can't be telling me that sailors had it better while women weren't allowed onboard. Or miners. Or construction workers. An epitome of workers' rights abuse for workers some 100 years ago is a picture from a skyscraper, with no safety gear on anything for all the workers - but wasn't controversial for that era at all. So much about today's "male disposability". The common picture that depicts those abuses is showing Rockefeller's skyscraper build in 1930s. Those "good ole days when Men had it all, also when Whitey had his privileges", are days when abuse that we point and talk about today is a piece of cake.

Unlike a general image how "men have it hard today", we never had it better - but not thanks to feminists and those who run society, it's thanks to ourselves. That sh1t don't fly anymore and there's active refusal to follow it in Western democracies. And we need to make sure to oppose and dismantle the rest of that sh1t.

I can’t side with this. There’s a reason why the shutter sound and I think the flash cannot be turned off on phones in Japan , they have high rates of sexual assaults on trains, upskirt videos and creep shots taken of women. I’m all for men’s right but I fully support women’s only train compartments. The same goes for India , would you say what they’re doing there is wrong for separating men and women ? This is the wrong hill to die on.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having trains/buses for women and that guy was incredibly stupid/condescending to think he had the right to enter into one and film it like he is some pulitzer winning journalist "exposing" some grave injustice.
So are you for passing judgment on Japanese Women without any inkling of what they go through or why these women only trains were put there in the first place.
My advice, get off of your high horse and stop worrying about how other countries choose to do anything. Not everything is a battle of the sexes.

If you actually did your research about the issues women face from men in Japan you would know that upskirting and sexual assault has become such a prevalent issue in Japan for women in general but especially on public transport that not only have they made these women only train carriages so women can feel safe and not on edge whilst travelling, but they have also stopped the ability to turn off the camera noise on phones to discourage men from taking upskirt pictures. Not only is this man invading women only train carriages especially frightening for these women, but he did it with his camera recording and then proceeded to point it at those women and mock them and then post it on the internet for everyone to watch. Not only was his behaviour downright disrespectful and disgusting but he didn’t even bother to research why these women have their own train carriages and rushed to assumptions and shaming them. please start educating yourselves about these issues instead of taking somebody’s narrative that fits your own and spreading misinformation and false narratives. Is that common? It’s only been around a decade since elementary schoolers have been walking around with phones, so unless you have kids, are a kid, or a teacher, you wouldn’t really have any reason to know that this is an issue.

I am happy for women to have women-only spaces. You don't need many bad men to make lots of women afraid. What I object to is the deliberate invasion of every men-only space by women. All the places men used to go to get away from women now have women in them.

I suggest that we either ban all single-sex spaces except bathrooms and showers, or we allow single-sex spaces. I am okay with either.

The women only trains are not because “all men are bad,” it’s because some men grope women during rush hours (rush hour trains can be so packed you literally can’t fit anyone else on them). The women only rule is only one car per train, only on commuting trains, and it’s only women only for 2-3 hours in the morning on weekdays. Other than the lack of men only cars, what is the problem here?

Hi, we have these in Europe too. Don't know how many times people touched you on public transportation with their naked genitals, but it has happened to me a couple times. Drunk people "flirting" with me and touching my body at night is a current occurrence. By "people" I mean men of course.... Japan is the capital of these things.

I lived in Japan for a year, by the way, but not in Tokyo. I find it hard to believe that groping is that big of a problem to require women only coaches. If Japanese men didn’t sexually assault and take upskirt pictures of their women all the time there would’ve been no need to provide female only coaches and there would not be a sharp increase in the amount of innocent men fearing of being falsely accused and asking for male only carriages. Start blaming the disgusting men perpetuating these behaviours and holding them accountable for the reason women’s carriages were needed in the first place and innocent men now fear being falsely accused even more, they are the root of the problem and focusing on dealing with those men and reducing the rate of sexual assault against women in Japan is the solution to rectifying the awful reputation they give most Japanese men and reducing false accusations as women will stop expecting to get assaulted every time they board a train, not male only carriages

In Japan it is very como for guys to grope women. I had a classmate who nonchalantly told me that he groped girls in the train and asked me why I didn't do it as well. It is a big issue in Japan.

These have existed india for the longest time, but here it’s rightfully so, mainly because it’s physically taxing and most trains have people barely hanging by a thread on their way to work or home, and we wouldn’t like to risk our women this way.

Edit: there are also 1-2 women only trains (entire trains) that run twice a day (in my state)

So... maybe not a popular take, my women's sexual assault crimes are unfathomable high in Japan, and this is one of their solutions (along with making all their phones have a shutter skund effect when they take a picture).

Obviously the real solution is to get the men not to commit these crimes, but in the meantime, something like this is reasonable. Men don't have men-only coaches because there's not a need for then there.

The problem is that molestation on trains during rush hour is way too common in Japan. 5 out of the 6 women from japan that I know well enough personally to talk about these things, have been penetrated by some unknown person's fingers while on a train multiple times. the only one who didn't get molested was the one that almost never took the train because her father was upper management in a zaibatsu company, and had a driver.

They have no idea who it was, because during rush hour, there isn't even enough room to turn around to look behind you on the train.

They all said that the first time it happened to them they were children, the youngest age they were when it happened was 11.

As someone that was born and lives in the UK, I only feel safe having an informed opinion on men's issues in the UK.

At face value, this seems crap. But Japanese culture is completely different to mine. They could be a far more sexist country for all I know, far more or less feminist, I haven't lived there, it's not right for me to say.

The only issue with this is there is a Japanese style of porn in which men record under women's skirts or grope them- and it's relatively prominent in Japan - the reverse isn't true. Men don't have to fear women doing the same thing. So in this particular culture there is an imbalance that exists that you don't really see in western societies like the UK (where even making eye contact with another man is awkward af coz of our good ol' social repression (not complaining bout it as a Brit I love it ))

When I grew up in Dubai, the metro has women only coaches because of the fact that there was a great deal of secual assault by men from less developed cultures using it)

Yeah it ment I had to stand in the general cariges while my gf's went to the less crowded women's only, but I knew that they were safer there because there were a lot of bad actors about

People in western countries need to understand that not all countries are feminist like the west.
