Even as someone who prefers inexperienced men I don't really believe in this theory as a blanket rule.

There's too many variables at play. What counts as first love? How old was he? Was he actually in a relationship with her or was it unrequited? Getting over a girl you liked but who never noticed you at 14 and getting over your first 6-year LTR you almost married are two different situations.

My first love (that I remember) was when I was about 6 years old. And yes, I still remember that girl and she is my fond memory. Then I had many different, more or less platonic experiences with a whole range of girls throughout my childhood to adolescence, with varying intensity and type of feelings from curiosity, friendship, admiration, desire and lust to infatuation. The first time I had my heart broken was when I was 14-15 years old, and I probably broke some hearts around the same time.

So, at least for me, the first infatuation is difficult to determine and often did not go hand in hand with sexual experiences. And it's hard to expect that the relationships I had at the age of 12, 13 or even 16-17 would last my whole life. It would be nice, but little chance.

If we are talking about the first true romantic love, then in my opinion it is something that a person builds up over time and only when the infatuation fades does he find out whether he managed to build that love or not. That is, typically in a long-term relationship and it does not have to be the first long-term relationship at all.

I wonder if this theory is an outgrowth of oedipus complex and the "men are attracted to women that remind them of their mother" theory.

If it were true, and not connected to the above. There's still trade offs, and I'm not sure if this would confer enough advantage to outweigh the trade-off costs.

I suspect that if we consider the first love, to be a man's mother that the theory probably holds some weight, and it influences men's preferences/choices. However, again unlikely that the advantages to a prospective woman outweigh the costs.

However, if we don't consider mother as the potential first love. I suspect the theory is bunk.

My first attempts at love were all harshly rejected and I’ve never really gotten over it, in that I’ve never been open to caring that much about somebody since then. Even if I wanted to I’m not sure I could. Some of the women I’ve dated as an adult have accused me of being cold and distant, not really caring about them. I’m not sure how different I’d be if I had better experiences early on, maybe it’s just the way I am.

I think if you experience something great, it's hard to go back to mediocrity. If their first relationship was amazing (until they got dumped) they might always be chasing that high. Most "first loves" aren't that good though.

My first few relationships had issues, and I definitely don't miss them. It makes me more appreciative of my gf, because I know how rare our connection is.

No, I think it's part of the "male romance conceit" mindset for the first female he mates with to fall in love with him for life; they want it to PAIRBOND, to bind them for life (also, plz make her hot and high-status and make everyone ELSE jealous that she's permanently MINE ect).

They fear women who have partners before them because they're afraid she's... IDK, already "bonded" to her first partner, and that she'll always be longing for and yearning for him because (and here's where the insecurity comes in) they ASSUME her previous partner must have been better than himself in every way.

The truth is, no, none of it works that way. Humans live in the present; what we have NOW is infinitely more real than what we had years ago, and when you have sex, you're not stuck thinking "man, this isn't as good as the sex I had 15 years ago".

I think for women, the "romantic conceit" is more along the lines of "love at first sight", where love forms before even getting to know someone (and sex isn't the primary focus.)

(disclaimer: I use the word "conceit" because I think most people have romantic thoughts that we flatter ourselves with, but MOST people know the difference between wishful thinking and actually thinking it's REAL or they're ENTITLED to it.)

I would lie if I said I don't love her still after many years. She's the love of my life for sure.

And I met her after dating (or banging) other 50 women. She wasn't the most gorgeous girl I've been with, nor the smartest, not the most accomplished, but I loved her like crazy dude.

I think this is unlikely, since most men experience their first crush as young boys and it is usually very shallow, and more importantly, the memory of it fades over time.

Honestly, kinda can confirm the theory? I’ve had 3 boyfriends ever (the first was at 16 and he was a year younger, so of course I was the first for that one), but I’ve been the first girlfriend/love for all of them.

First bf and I break up. I’ve always been more on the emo/goth aesthetic, and suddenly he consistently dates those kinds of girls.

Second bf (toxic and manipulative, stereotypical spoiled millionaire’s only child with no redeeming qualities, which I tragically only figured out after a few years), always said blondes are his type (blonde here), suddenly he’s super into the goth/dark aesthetic look too and that’s all the celebrity women he started to follow. I dumped him, and for 9 months, he was still texting me his anguish, apologizing, and begging for another chance (and getting no response) until I blocked him. Keep in mind, the last 3 months of this, and him sending gifts to my house, was also occurring WHILE HE HAD A NEW REBOUND GIRLFRIEND (who tried to get him to cheat on me, and whom he had previously shit talked to me to no end before the dumping). Unblocked him a month ago out of curiosity, and within a week, another text dings my phone. He’s still with that girl, btw, and apparently she knows and is fine with the fact that he’s trying to pretend she’s me.

3rd (and hopefully final) bf, I’m with now. Unlike the former two, he’s a walking forest of green flags and the only person I’ve ever truly felt was my perfect match.

You can apply such to any of these “theories”—if one has self-awareness and is a mature adult with a developed pre-frontal cortex, they more than well have the ability to get past their psychological barriers.

These “theories” apply to people that lack self-awareness and succumb to their unhealthy thoughts. Apply it to men being natural hunters—that innate drive can cause them to be naturally dominant and aggressive. But a man with self awareness does not succumb to that. He will turn that testosterone surge into an ability to protect.

It’s the same thing as women having the ability to be dominant and assertive despite their estrogen making them natural caregivers.

And no, this is not sexist, it’s biology.

With my experience, it's true. Throughout my life, I've always been able to be charming enough or pretty enough for any girl. I fell in love with this girl, and for many years tried to get with her. The love kept growing and growing. When she broke things off, and when she got a boyfriend later, these events broke me. Even to this day I still have a level of hope for her to come back, but they aren't that high. I cannot find the same love anymore. And like mentioned before, I am still deeply in love with her. I write her letters that I'll never send, I frequently still have dreams about her, and when I draw, she is the model in my head. So to answer your question, I do think Men's First love theory is true. But it depends on how much they've loved this person, and of course, if their partner broke things off or something grave happened.

I don't subscribe to the theory, though I agree that first loves are intense because everything is experienced for the first time. So I think men seek to reproduce the emotional highs with another partner; and that is entirely possible to do. Loving another person isn't terribly exclusive to just one person in the entire universe. You might be prone to doing things that worked in the 1st relationship w/o realizing they may not work in the 2nd. So it's a bit of a bummer when you discover the amount of relearning that may have to happen.

As far as the entire experience goes, first loves are great, but nothing and no one is perfect. Everyone and every partnership is unique and has its own potential strengths and weaknesses, regardless of what came before.

Yeah, I don’t believe this theory. A man’s first girlfriend is either a “starter girlfriend” (if that man is high value enough to have options), or, if he doesn’t have options, then she’s probably someone low value whom he might not even be compatible with.

There are, of course, exceptions, but from what I’ve seen this is usually a case. There’s a good reason most men don’t usually seriously settle down until their late 20s.

My first crush was in 6th grade, in reality the girl is your typical attention whore.

My first 'love' with in 9th grade - we semi-kissed once but she stayed with her boyfriend.

Then I "loved" another in age 19-20 - nothing happened between us.

Then I had sex with a hot girl, and in 3 weeks we were 'in love'.

This went on and off for 2 years, then on for another 6-7.

It's been 5 years since we've divorced (been maried 1.5 yearas).

Who was my first love here? Surely the most intense was the latter girl, but she's the only one something happened with.

Will I love another like I loved her? probably not, but it's a first love, with too much innocence and magical thinking - it doesn't make it better, it's just more innocent and to be frank, quite ill-advised.

I think it's safe to say I 'got over her' a long time ago, and the kind I'll fall in love with next will probably have a lot of differences (though she is a cute little thing).

When men lack that experience, (more so in ages 30+) they’re usually lacking in other traits necessary for any well minded woman to see them as a viable option.

And it’s not because women trust other women’s judgment so they prefer to see “the car fax.” I think most women would adore a man with little to no dating past, just like men would.

The difference being that men put emphasis on the physical/sexual aspect, while women cater to emotional intelligence and are willing to see past the number of women they’ve been with.

And I’m not saying every man without dating experience lacks emotional intelligence but it’s indisputable to say that a large percentage of men who take longer in achieving this goal will show less and less empathy as time goes on. As this is a large component of what women innately seek, it leaves little opportunity for success.

That is. unless the man is willing to accept his reality without accepting it as fate. And that takes a certain awareness women look for.

How can you be so naive of a summer child to even allow for the possibility that this theory is true, when you have countless examples in your real life social circle and the online community that disprove it? We DO GET OVER OUR FIRST LOVE. Neither my first nor second love are anything i would look for now and they don't resemble my current or ex-gf before her at all.

People develop and grow. I am not the same person at 16 that i was a 26 or 36. I have different preferences, different views of relationships, different needs, a different lifestyle that requires a different partner.

Being someones first partner is the last you want to be, if you are looking for a long term relationship. That first choice is borderline impossible to be a good choice.
