The study showing that was retracted because the researcher (Paul Dolan) was fabricating data.

Unfortunately, so many woman-focused websites and media outlets pushed the idea before the study was retracted that you can hear people repeating this all over, including reddit, and if you show the people the study was retracted they might block you or have the mods ban you, because they want to constantly demean men with the idea that their presence makes women less happy.

I believe the research that married people of both sexes are happier is pretty strong overall, any outlier notwithstanding.

I’d just add, any survey that depends on self report will have to content with the fact that the average woman is an incredibly powerful self justification machine.

It's a load of bullshit.

Regardless of gender, if you are in a long term relationship with a person who is a good fit for you, you will find more prosperity than you would being alone.

These types of studies are seen by feminists and then put together with the retrospective of the long past lack of woman's rights, nuclear house wife ideas and then also compiled with all the many examples of terrible, no good men.

What you get at the end of the day is a lot of women who really believe in the feminist ideas. The woman who had shitty male family members and/or lovers are the most dug into the feminism. My sister for example, had a bad father and also went through a series of breakups. One particular breakup really broke her heart and she began to hate men. She met a very good hearted, patient man that she is now married to now and all her feminist philosophies mostly vanished.

Men are socially shamed more for being single and not getting laid. So this is why being single impacts a man more mentally. Especially if he hasn't had sexual success or he has a cold streak or dry spell. If a woman has been single and hasn't got laid in awhile, its wildly accepted that this is by her choice. She hasn't met the right man yet. If a man hasn't got laid in awhile, he's seen as an inkwell. It's seen as not by choice. He's seen as a loser. I have taken time off dating after my ex and I broke up 3+ months ago. And I anticipate I won't be getting back out there for a long time. I'm just not in the mood to date. I am burn out with dating. I feel like humans are just very self-serving and this goes also with dating. People are only as loyal as their options. My ex dropped me like I was nothing after telling me I was the most attentive lover she ever had not long ago. She's probably fucking her ex of 9 years (that she kept bringing up since our third date) or some other man. Because God knows women can bed another man way faster on average than a man can bed another woman. Lmfao. The dating market is really skewed like that. While I need more time to mentally prepare for the shit show that is dating. But if you haven't got any action in awhile as a man, something is seen as wrong with you.

Correlation doesn't prove causation. When more than half of marriages are ending in divorce, you're really looking at survivor statistics on who made it through. So statistically, it's not really that married men are happier but rather that the ones who make it through and are successfully able to keep a marriage together also tend to be healthy, happy, etc.

There have only been 2 studies about this and both intricately related.

The first one was a college campus survey from a basically unknown newspaper called The Independent, and uh, yeah, of course single college aged women were having more fun single than in a relationship.

The 2nd was inspired by that survey and was done by a researcher named Paul Dolan, who retracted the study because he misread and fabricated data.

Most legit studies show that women in long term marriages without kids are the happiest women. (And women with kids are about equally happy as single women)

Unfortunately, the only metric most feminists use when it comes to "Studies" is whether it benefits them or not. (Course, same goes for conservatives) The medical divorce study being another famous one they treat men leaving more as fact despite the authors retracting it due to calculation errors, with further studies inspired by it finding that who leaves who is largely based on the type of medical issue (Like how women tend to leave men more over neurological issues, and men more over heart issues. It's really a coin toss, you can't make one surefire call for either side leaving more), and that's not even getting into medical debt divorce.

There's so many potential reasons, but the main one that pops to the top of my head is it's easier for women to find partners. You can be a 40 year old cashier as a woman, and there are plenty of guys that will want to be with you. It's not the same for men.

So if a woman is single, it's more likely to be a choice. If a man is single, it's more likely to be a lack of opportunity.

This does get trotted out in 'electively single' communities quite a bit - and it's odd. Because usually if a particular demographic is worse off they are treated sympathetically and their issues concentrated on. But in the 'single people community' you get, "Women are happier single than those silly men, ha ha." Single men allegedly worse off than married ones, nobody cares.
And it is 'allegedly.' Although I don't know why people want to turn it into a competition - and I've said so on several occasions. Why does it matter to Alice if Bob is happily single, if Alice is happily single as well?

And yet - try dating a woman for more than a year or two and see who’s the one pushing for marriage and legal commitment. In my (and many of my friend’s) experience, it’s the ladies who want to get married more than the men.

The more paranoid side of me thinks certain pockets of feminism (the academic kind produced by bitter, middle-class, educated women) use this type of study to further drive a wedge between the sexes and damage the idea and institution of the family.

I'm sure they didn't hook up women to some brain-scanning machine. I'm sure they just used what women themselves were saying -- and enough women love to complain about marriage and love to say how amazing being single is that that's probably enough to skew the data.

If you look at measures like life length, anti-depressant use, number of cats, amount of alcohol consumed, odds of suicide, etc, then I'm quite sure that single women don't win.

There's also the thing that 20-something and early-30-something women might genuinely be quite happy, because at that age they're typically beautiful and everyone treats them well, and if they're into that they can easily sleep around with various hot guys. Which can be genuinely fun in the short term, leading to those women reporting being happy (and if research focuses on university women, this can skew the data). But the thing is, while it may be fun to be a single childless 20-something woman, it's not fun to be a single childless 60-something woman. The "remain single and childless" route typically doesn't lead to happiness for women later in their life.

Also, if scientists do 50 studies, and then only the one that finds that single women are happier reaches the headlines, then that suggests a different picture than what data actually says. Because "hip media outlets" aren't going to publish a study saying "single women unhappier."

Finally, single women are benefitting unfairly from being preferentially hired and promoted in the West, plus possibly getting half a man's stuff in court. So if you're part of a privileged class that in some situations gets unfair access to money, it's not very impressive to say "I'm pretty satisfied."

I've legitimately been happier whilst being single. I can take care of my own needs; I cook, I clean, and I run a household right. And not to impress women. There are very few women who genuinely value those skills in a man. I do it for myself. I don't need anyone else to be happy. But I do want someone in my life. It'd be nice to have someone I can trust as a confidante. These nights have grown lonely. But knowing modern culture war politics, there are few women who you can trust with your feelings. My plan is to keep my head low, wait out this storm, be a rock in the tempest, both for myself and for my brothers 💪

Single women are not happier unless you mean happier once they leave a bad marriage/relationship in contrast to the poor treatment. Most divorce filers are in fact women.

Men I believe are more miserable as sex is more of a drive for them. Without it they are left frustrated and unfulfilled. I’m high libido but I’m an outlier among my friends. At some point most see it as one more chore when they are doing the majority of childcare and domestic work even when both work full time.

When I divorced I suddenly had every other weekend OFF. Married he’d whine if I was gone 2 hours for a haircut as three kids was “ too much” married. He figured it out apparently lol.

It's very easy for the average women to get sex and validation when they are single. While it's very rare for the average guy to get sex and validation when not in a relationship. I think if you looked at the top % of men and compared them to women the happiness levels would be similar.

I agree. This seems like a one sided argument. I think overall, both men and women tend to be happier together. I believe women who say these things are probably Gen Z women who are stuck in the me too movement and think any man that approaches them are predators and to stay away! There's a good channel on YouTube called Better Bachelor who discusses these topics in depth. However, I will say that I believe children that come from a home with two parents tend to be happier and more stable.

The fact is ladies, you have complained about men for so long and have made us so afraid that if we approach you and you don't like us, that you'll run and claim sexual harassment at the drop of a hat and get us fired from our jobs and ruin our lives!! I also hear about these single groups that try to have social functions to bring single people together to try and meet. Do you know who goes to these? Women, not men. Young men have checked out in this country. It seems as though some have this crazy notion that you "don't need no man". Well, okay then. Who's going to go up on high steel and build skyscrapers and roads, and be mechanics? I'm not saying women can't but they, in a majority of cases, don't want to do that kind of work. When I'm on the highways seeing road construction, I see zero women on those works sites.

So, good luck women if you don't want us around. That's fine. You can be alone and miserable. We'll be just fine.

My perspective is "well duh," but not for the same reason as them.

I would draw a comparison to Harry Harlow's (flagrantly unethical) monkey studies. His most famous one showed that baby monkeys preferred a cloth surrogate mother over a wireframe with a milk bottle. There was a variation where one group had a cloth mother with a milk bottle, and the other group only had a wireframe with a milk bottle, and he saw that the cloth mother group was significantly healthier than the wire mother group.

Society used to be like his most famous experiment, where men depended on women for emotional health, and women depended on men for financial health and basic subsistence. Now it's more like the variation I mentioned, where women are no longer dependent on men, but men are still dependent on women. Single women are obviously going to be happier than single men, because single women's problems have been addressed and single men's problems haven't. Married men are obviously going to be happier than single men, because now they have a partner to help them with their problems. And married women are obviously going to be less happy than single women, because now they're getting a taste of the problems that society has saddled their male partners with.

It's not that men need to step up and be better partners. It's that society needs to stop dehumanizing us to turn us into better tools and weapons.

I think that unfortunately happiness in modern times seems to be entangled to other values than your own. By this I mean there are a lot of things being pushed onto people, such as you have to have this to be happy or look at how happy you could be if you just altered your life.

Some of it is good, like no one should suffer abuse, or that if you face hardship then you should get help, or that talking to people about your feelings or grievances shouldn't be perceived as a weakness by anyone. But then there is a myriad of things that try to make you short-sighted. Luxury items you never needed, special treatment that makes you a hypocrite or a relationship that is supposed to be the crux of your self worth.

I don't think this is a gendered issue in any other way than what you are pushed towards, and while I understand this is a bit of a conspiracy theory, I genuinely think that marketing differing lifestyles is a conscious choice for at least some companies and some ideologies. Happiness doesn't coincide with vendors' income. There is nothing to market for a happy person.

I also think we men need to up the empathy game a lot by normalizing listening to eachothers' worries and making a better world for men and women. Compassion is a gift that keeps giving. I'm happy if single women are happy, let's work towards making single men happier and good relationships so that those involved are even happier.

I find it more helpful to focus on the life expectancy study as this isn't just self reported data.

So women's life expectancy goes down compared to never married.

Men's life expectancy goes up compared to never married.

Both of these are averages and we don't know causality.

So my guess is: women have a big opportunity cost when marrying a random joe. By marrying him and maybe bearing his children she has way less time being around friends and the family she already has. Men on the others hand almost always seem to gain social connections by getting in a relationship compared to the social support they would have when single.

For most people, relationships are based around necessity or novelty.The necessity is now handled so now.All relationships are based off of novelty.But novelty wears off its easier for someone to come to some sort of sense of self-worth or being by themselves.Then it is using another person to justify their existence.

It doesn't faze me one way or another. I just wish more men, gaining the sense of comfort being themselves by themselves rather than trying to search for meaning In a relationship with a woman or even if you don't date women.

As a woman from 3rd world country, definitely women are happy being single here. Hell, I don't wanna marry at all. Men in my country are spoiled brat (at least my dad and uncles) they used to beat my mom and aunt, will decide if she can go outside for even grocery shopping...i think my case is extreme but in my country there are too many extreme cases. After watching this my whole life (my friends are getting married- forced)... I am at least able to break free from dad and rn studying at a good college, i really love maths, (and would soon go for phd and buy my own apartment and decorate it omg i am excited). No way in hell i am getting married at least to the men in my country who would expect me to leave everything and start washing his ass
