You not only gotta stick around, but keep doing what's best for the kid which means a dad to guide them. Dads are become even more important as a child reaches and hits adulthood.

I personally believe when one has a child, one's first duty to to that kid no matter what. Above any other person.

My ex happily giggled when she saw the payout for my life insurance. For her, my death wouldn't hurt anyone she cared about. I was simply a pathetic flesh bag in the way of getting all the money (plus the life insurance payout.) She treated me like a slave to be beaten and starved. I left before she gave me a heart attack.

Her taking a bullet would simply be karma returning the favour. Not just to me, but the many people she's treated like firewood.

Sorry to hear that man. Mine wasn't like that, although she did have a bit of a drinking problem, but I have my vices too. We drifted apart, but I believed we could have got back to where we once were. Her choosing to leave was betrayal enough for me to want nothing to do with her, but worse than that is she did it a week after my job ended (we relocated and I resigned so that we could move, but she got a job in the new place before we moved), and just as I was finishing renovating our new house we bought she asked me to leave and give her space.

I opened a term life insurance policy. I messaged my wife that I don't take a day for granted and would gladly give my life for her or our kids. Most men elect to “do the right thing” even if they suffer because it. They put family, and children first. They stay in an unhappy, love less, sexless unfulfilling marriage, work 2 jobs or 14 hr days t o provide for their family and children, because they were taught and brought up with this sense of responsibility, that’s what it means to be a “husband, a father, a man”. In turn we expect the the wives will also do the “right thing”. They will also put “family first, children first” Whether that’s right or wrong or why they do it (check or read NMMNG) is a separate story.

You are or have already divorced. You don’t need to keep carrying on with the self sacrifice. If there’s something happening to your xw that may hurt your child, like a metaphorical bullet headed her way, you don’t need to step in front of her to take the bullet for her. Don’t tell your yourself that losing you will be easier for your child than losing the mom. Instead BE the dad that if your child had to lose you, he would hurt just as much, if not more. This isn’t about your child, it’s about you - you think it’s “virtuous” to “take the bullet and spare your child some pain”.

PS: I would have done the same thing, to an extent I did do the same thing. Hindsight is 20/20.

No I wouldn't, there was a time that I would have without a second thought taken the bullet, then I realized how my kids life would be with her alone, we were married for almost 19 years and the woman couldn't drive, couldn't budget or even make a grocery list. In one year, she managed to burn thru her family ties and ended up homeless in a relationship with a sex offender. No, I didn't want my kid to be alone with her, so no, I wouldn't take the bullet

Confused at your trail of thought. You said if your ex died your child would be more hurt than if you died. You also said that you dying instead of your ex is what's best for your child. I think you need to cut yourself some slack. What have studies shown from how well children grow up without a mother vs a father? Your child might be more sad if their mother passed away, doesn't mean that is what's "BEST" for them.

A lot of codependent people grow attached to abusive people in their lives, more than those who actually love them. Doesn't mean that is what's best for them.

In no reality is it optimal or even ok for you to sacrifice yourself for your wife or ex wife, you are an equal and important part of your kid’s life. You’re not less than your ex, get that out of your head. I don’t mean to be rude but the fact that you’re even suggesting this is a strong indicator that you need to speak to a therapist and other men.

What’s best for your child is growing up with a strong, resilient, loving, involved father. Someone to lead and show her what a strong man looks like. Be that man.

Let's call it a proverbial bullet then. The bullet could be symbolic for committing a task that benefits her.but hurts you for the sake of your child. Another example, if she needed work done on her house and it was going to cost her $1000, and instead info it for free but tell her to put $500 into the child's savings account. She benefits, the child benefits, and I suffer because of the labour (my time, back pain) and the anxiety it causes me means I'm not a present father for my child the next 3 days,.bit her mother is better for her because she didn't have to spend $1000.

No way. We’re in the thick of the divorce now. One reason for her walking away from our three young kids was she was jealous of the relationship I had with them, because it made her feel like a bad mother.
