I wouldn't say I'm afraid of it more so than any other person. But it is a scary thought.

The idea that you could fall in love with someone, become emotionally connected, have them be an important part of your life (maybe even the most), plan a life together and find out that they were using you for some non-love based thing.

Whether it be for financial reasons, attention, entertainment, sex, housing, or anything else.

That you could find out you've been some unwilling stooge, in what might be one of the most vulnerable, embarrassing, painful ways.

I'd imagine that's a pretty normal fear to have, having your heart ripped out by someone playing you for a fool.

As far as signs? I don't know. A scary part is that it's likely not that hard to hide, so long as the offender could maintain a convincing amount of give and take. Throwing up some illusory connection with someone who is already prone to loving them isn't a difficult thing at all.

It's an uncomfortable reality that we're all pretty easy to lie to and convince of falsehoods, especially when our most sensitive of emotions are involved.

And the people who believe themselves above being mislead are more often than not, the easiest marks of all.

Honestly, I imagine that unless this person was a total idiot, picking up on the signs while you're blinded by rose tinted idealizing is going to be hard.

Think of all the people who only realize how awful their partner was after they've been out of it for a while. All the signs that they missed. Man or woman.

Finding out that this person that you love, and you thought you were going to spend you life with, was using tolerating your most intimate moments because you paid the rent, or were a thing for them to get attention and sex from is crushing.

We all fear betrayal, I think. I do, anyway. It's devastating, and can often leave long lasting changes to a person. It causes a lot of people to forever change how much of themselves they're able to put into a relationship, if they're able to renter relationships at all.

There's a lot to be scared of. It can wreak havoc on your ability to commit to one of the most important, meaningful connections a person can have.

Pain is a powerful teacher, even if it's lessons harm us more than they help. And betrayal is pretty fucking painful.

I don't think it really needs to be broken down into a man or woman thing. I think it's something that puts a lump in all of our throats.

You can be used in many ways and it isn't great. But it is also human and happens all the time.

The real panic young men are having is the idea that the women they are with don't actually enjoy sex with them or desire them. Or if the women do, it is the pale facsimile of the kind of desire and excitement they did or could feel with a more attractive and conventionally masculine man.

This would always be emasculating and humiliating, but we've also turned being sexually attractive and capable into more of a male status symbol than it ever was, so everything is amplified.

I'm afraid of being used for money or time, or that gender roles are being placed upon me.

To be clear I open doors for people. I can cover a friend's drink or even meal. I can cook. I can clean. I protect my loved ones in public. I was the driver of a carpool one time. I can do unpaid labor whether it's assembling furniture or helping people with their medical needs.

However, what I resent is the gendered expectation that, simply because I'm a man, I should act as someone's chauffer, bodyguard, cook, and on and on, with her not picking up any slack elsewhere in life. I don't like gender roles in general and it feels gross to say "You're a woman you do X for me.", so I couldn't really feel fair demanding she "perform" female gender roles in return.

Because I wouldn't like the entitlement, and because it'd feel wrong to demand the same thing in return (male gender role for female gender role), I'd end up feeling used.

Firstly, I think straight up usage is very uncommon. I think most of the time people who were rejected are bitter about having spent money on a date, invested emotionally on a person who didn’t reciprocate, or performing sexual favors for someone who didn’t want to commit. They retroactively frame their unrequited interest as “getting used,” even though they freely spent, gave, performed.

That said, I’ve had a couple experiences that felt pretty nakedly manipulative.

This includes buying tickets to events, giving rides, buying dinner. I would say it also can include things like securing a date to an event, making an ex jealous, and essentially just using a man for the social capital that he can provide.

I’m not a sentimentalist. I don’t think providing benefits entitles you to a sexual or romantic connection (or vice versa). But this sort of misrepresents what’s unethical about using people, which is the manipulation aspect.

The real, valid complaint behind “being used” is that it feels like the other person misrepresented their feelings about you because they knew you would validate them. That’s true whether it’s a guy pretending to want a relationship in order to get laid, or a woman with no interest in you pretending she might actually date you in order to be lavished with dinners and fancy dates because the attention validates her ego. It is very similar to how fuck bois use women: feigning an honest attempt at romance and then cutting and running once you’ve gotten the validation you needed, and that’s all.

But again this is usually just a byproduct of rejection, not a conscious decision that a “user” is making. Which is not to say no one consciously makes these decisions or exploits these dynamics. Also, some people just rationalize it as their right to exploit these dynamics.

Things I am afraid of being used for:

Time, attention, emotional energy, money

For the first 3, if she wants to chat for too long before meeting, wants to talk too much, wants me.to be their personal therapist, wants elaborate dates especially for the first few dates.

For money, if they literally ask for money or for me to pay for certain things, or again elaborate expensive dates.

How I guard against it is only continuing to chat to women who agree to concrete date plans within a relatively short amount of talking. And for the first few dates only doing free or very low cost things on dates.

I will spend zero dollars on a girl until I feel she is interested in me, and I am interested enough to justify it.

I think the fear comes from being treated as a means to an end. Some women want a nice house, house work done, someone to help them with their car and don't care about the person giving them (or helping them with) those things. It's just like when men use women for sex without caring about them. No one wants to be treated as an object.

I have also been used by a woman JUST to make the toxic man she really wanted jealous. I met her on twitter. I had finally worked up my courage to DM her and say "Hey wyd" to my surprise she responded enthusiastically. Awesome. I set up a date near my place. Olive Garden + movies. I know three men, all long-time friends from elementary schools, who were used for security and stability. They had solid careers, good jobs, and were genuinely committed. I was thrilled to make her happy.When my birthday came, she took me to The Old Spaghetti Factory with her parents , a place I can’t eat at because of dairy allergies. Her dad ended up paying for my meal.

That’s when it hit me, she wasn’t with me because she liked me. She wanted someone who was obsessed with her and willing to give everything while expecting very little in return. That experience taught me a lot.

A woman who genuinely just enjoys a guy's company or is just attracted with zero incentives, won't really care where he takes her out to eat or have coffee, won't care what he drives or try to figure out his earning potential. Men who got women when they were broke in college know what it's like to have a woman just want to be with you with no alterior motive.

Unfortunately, as women get older a certain amount of them start worrying about support or living a certain lifestyle, and it becomes less about pure companionship and more about getting help or a man who can fulfill XYZ role for them. Which is fine if that's their new prerogative.

However, a lot of these same women criticize foreign women for vetting for traits such as men who can provide, we have good careers, who are handy and capable. They'll claim these women are using Western men yet these Western women claiming this have the same if not higher standards.

In my experience, the most common way that women use men involves the classic "friendzone" situation.

In that situation, the woman is using the man for favors (which sometimes includes financial support), validation, and a sympathetic ear when she wants to unload.

Typically in that type of relationship, the man puts up with the situation because (1) he is enchanted with the woman and it makes him happy to spend time with her; and (2) he is hoping against hope that their "friendship" will blossom into a romantic/sexual relationship.

The classic sign that a man is being used in such a way is that in such a relationship, the woman puts very little into the relationship. If he needs a favor from her, she will be too busy or tired to help. If he wants to make plans, she will agree only if she has literally nothing better to do and she will cancel at the last minute if anything slightly more interesting comes up.

I would say that in general, the critical question is how much the woman is investing in the relationship compared to the man. The greater the imbalance, the more likely she is using him.

A sperm donor to have children with if she's decided she wants kids, isn't going to find a man she wants, and decides to act before her biological clock runs out, and is okay with being a single mom because of it.
Sex (yes, women can use men for sex too while leading them on)
Favors/free labor, including emotional labor

Signs of using him?

All interactions are predicated around something he does for her.
She only reaches out to him in bad times, never good ones, and he never gets to partake in the good times.
Excessive concern with his money, wealth, family, job/career, or his industry connections/ties.
A push to marry and/or have children quickly.
If a man becomes wary, she refuses to even consider a prenup (very different than being willing to talk about it, but wanting to discuss terms).
If she's using him for sex, she promises more but never gives more. She leaves immediately after sex.
She either cheats, pushes for an open relationship, or is uncharacteristically unethusiastic around any and all forms of physical touch or intimacy with him where she hasn't been previously (because this is PPD, I have to specify that this is different than her not wanting to do a specific sex act).

Signs of not using him?

Willing to indulge (most of) his hobbies (doesn't need to be all). Willing to try to learn about a couple, and they become hobbies for her too.
Desire to share her own hobbies with him, in the hopes he'll pick them up too. Users are usually going to keep the intimate parts of themselves out of the equation when using someone.
She does favors for him unsolicited or when he expresses struggles or needs help, she's there for him.
She frequently offers to pay for things when they're together. She feels bad if paying is lopsided where the guy is paying more and insists on correcting it to some varying degree.
Genuine sustained interest in him. If he keeps his wealth hidden from her in the beginning stages, and she shows enthusiasm from the beginning. When she finds out about his wealth later, her enthusiasm doesn't signifcantly increase - it remains constant as it has been.
She is enthusiastic about physical touch and intimacy with him, including sex. After sex, she sticks around and tries to build that deeper connection with him. She's vulnerable with him and tells him truth when she is.
Talk of children and marriage comes in due time without undue pressure early in a relationship.

These are all things men should be paying attention to.

Obviously, there are women using men for money especially men with strong compulsion to be the provider while they barely do the minimum known as gold diggers. The signs is as simple as imbalance of effort between the two with one working hard for the relationship to work while the other do bare minimum.
