Anyone else grew up thinking shared interests were a major cause of attraction?

Growing up I legitimately believed that sharing interests with a girl was a major factor in attraction. It turned out it rather can be a necessary but not sufficient condition: if she already finds you attractive, it can be a plus but it won't change much of anything if there's no existing attraction and it won't work alone.

You could say I was really naive but growing up I got plenty of messages that led me to believe it.
