The disease in Canada would spread. Basically, if you shack up for two years you are treated the same as being legally married. Of course the fuck of it is that once you are legally married then you can go through a divorce if you split.

I know a lot of people who live together monogamously and raise kids in a normal home but who aren't married. That would just become the norm if no one wanted to marry anymore. I think it might already be the norm where I live.

It would lead to a lot less children being born - a woman would have to be an idiot to get pregnant by a guy who can up and leaver her any minute. There is almost a guarantee that she will end up alone once she is 40+ and no longer hot so instead of ruining her body by pregnancy and wasting time/money raising a child, it would be more benefitial to focus on her career, have lots of female friends and get a dog for companionship. Maybe freeze some eggs, then have them insaminated with high quality genes from a sperm bank later once the career is secure and there is enough money and the children can be raised by the whole group of women.

There is no “snatching up“ high value men in this scenario - like TRP likes to say, they were never yours, it was just your turn. Following the male imperative, they would just have a bunch of kids with different women and quickly leave once things get slightly difficult or the woman isn't as hot as she used to be - regardless, resources would always have to be shared between your kid and the 20 others he has.

Most women would become single mothers. (There's no real economic downside - they can get hefty child support orders once paternity is established.) Most women would have one "trophy kid" to cross "motherhood" off the bucket list.

Marriage is a social institution that has been a very simple contract: a man provides resources, commitment and physical safety. In return the woman provides regular sex and children (/family) with some assurances the kids are his. Everything else has been a decoration, up to and including codifying this all in law and insisting on wedding cakes to smash into each others face. The original contract is as old as written history and perhaps even older.

Without that contact, marriage can be anything you want and arguing it is like arguing the shape of water after you drop a cherry bomb in a glass of water. Given that the contract seems to be null and void, the bob has detonated. Do whatever the fuck you want. Want to call it a marriage? Go for it. Never got the license? Whatever. Three gender-non-binary pygmies and a goat want to get married? I wanna go to that reception.

It's more common in liberal countries for people to be together and raise children, get tax benefits, get a mortgage... but no marriage.

So not the big deal you were hoping it would be.

Regardless, women lose out on marriage more than men so it would be better for women for sure. It's a patriarchal institution.
