Short answer: A lot.

Long answer: Women chase money because money is resources. Money can acquire resources. If women have money, then that means they no longer need to cling to a man to gain resources indirectly through him, which is historically how women and female primates gained resources. If a man doesn't have resources and can't get them, he's basically worthless to a woman.

Frankly, I would have had a different opinion about this question 6 months ago. But, I had an experience on Reddit that shocked me a little.

I commented on a thread in another sub wherein I alluded to my salary and the fact that it was about top 3% in the US. So, I'm not rich, but I am exceedingly comfortable.

My DMs got nuked! I had dozens and dozens of women of all ages sending me pictures and videos and all other kinds of prurient material.

Women are far more mercenary than even this older man thought.

I think it's similar to height in that at minimum they want a guy who earns as much as they do, but prefer one who maybe outearns them by 50%. That being said, I think how you look plays a much larger role in what women you can date than how wealthy you are.

UMC women marry other UMC men because they want to maintain a UMC lifestyle and to be with someone who shares their class background and values. Meaning if your a UMC man this is a non issue and if you’re a LC man you’re not going to transcend the class divide no matter how much you make.

Most LC women are just having and raising babies on their own.

Women want value. Men can either work to provide that value directly or pay to outsource the work. If a man is high value (funny, talented, a good cook, etc), he's got no problems getting laid. If a man can't (be bothered to) provide it himself he can outsource the work by paying a bit of cash to take his date to comedy clubs, concerts, and restaurants and let the professionals do the work.

People's value of money probably has more to do with in which cultures/households they grew up in, as well as economic conditions in those formative years. The results are also tend to not be clear cut.

Money is irrelevant in casual dating. Class somewhat matters, in the sense that having the wrong class cues can turn off a woman. And also your class will change who you interact with socially. But no one's asking the incomes of their ONS / FWBs.

It matters in relationships as most women want to date men making similar incomes or more. If you go really high up on the income ladder there are women willing to date down in income. But even then they won't date down in class, and they have higher standards wrt to masculinity.

Money does matter to a moderate extent because its a sign of status and value. Generally if you have your life together and an ok job, you are doing fine. Women generally like a man who is earning as much or more than they are. So a female engineer probably won't date a guy who works at McDonalds, but a woman who works at McDonalds might.

I care about it enough that I would never date a guy who doesnt make a good salary. He needs to have a better paid job than me at the very least. Its a huge turn off when a guy is broke.

I am only just entering the working world so take this with a grain of salt but...

I get the feeling women either like passion or income from a man's occupation. Some women lean one way or the other. But nobody wants a cashier, or a man with a dead-end job who hates it. Maybe you could be, say, a marine wildlife researcher and be underpaid making 50k with a PHD (don't bitch at me if that's unrealistic I don't know shit about that job). But if it seemed like 'your life mission' to a girl, I think many wouldn't care.

Likewise I don't think having a huge income can sell you to women on its own. All the wealthy men my parents' age I know are married to trucks (trucks who always looked like trucks). Meanwhile my Dad has a blue collar job and my mom used to do fitness modeling in the 80s and is getting into older women modeling now.

Soooo, I think income has a value... but it's just not going to get a 5 to LTR an 8 unless he sells his soul for a vapid gold digger mooch with no redeeming qualities. Unless we mean multi-millionaire money. That would be another story.

Women are more concerned about security than men, on average. So actual money, as well as capability to make money, take care of her, etc. all affect this.

Women are also sexually attracted to make ability. dominance, competence.

These are two somewhat related/interconnected, but still ultimately distinct circuitries. In the security circuitry, actual wealth, however accrued, is what matters most. Potential to achieve wealth also matters, but actuality trumps potentiality.

When it comes to the desire circuitry, wealth is an imperfect marker for competence and ability. When it can be separated out, females are more sexually attracted to ability than to actual power, money or status, which are just heuristic markers for the competence they truly desire.

As one can obviously see, the two circuitry systems obviously both evolved from similar biological reasons: women's greater vulnerability due to smaller size and a degree of incapacitation during pregnancy and when raising young children, etc. Nevertheless, they do manifest now in distinct ways.

As an example, if a woman meets a man who displays signs of wealth, both processes will register initial attraction to him. But should she then find out that he is fairly incompetent and won all his money in the lottery, he will still remain attractive in terms of her security needs circuitry. However, she will no longer feel additional raw sexual desire for him based on his wealth markers, because the wealth has now been revealed to be a false positive marker for underlying competence. He isn't capable and she knows it.

I really don't know. In my early adult years I was too busy working, going to school and building my wealth. So I dated regularly like everyone else and if I was single I had sugar mamas.

Once I was finished medical school I was already married and had accumulated much wealth (millions) from my side business I intially started to pay for school. (It did better than that, by sheer luck and connections from my then wife.)

So I was like late 20s early 30s. Married. Yet that was when lots of women came into my life. They even competed for my affection and love despite me being married. I even had a mistress that stayed with me 2 years while married and after my divorce. Despite me never talking about what I do for a living or what I have

(I got to the point where I have a spare condo I use as an airbnb property that I claim to be my primary residence to not let them know where I actually live. Until i get to know the girl for longer).

I would love to think that women like me for me alone (I'm fit, muscular, educated and I feel that I look pretty good for any age, I'm under 40). But I know that having money and being a surgeon by title definitely will get hamster wheels turning.

Actually I wouldn’t want a guy wealthier than me. I grew up with a working mom and a house dad, so pretty much I grew up in a household where women had more power. The thought of me bending my ass for some dude’s money honestly grosses me out. I just can’t be with a man that emasculates me and that includes that in every aspect. He would have to endure me letting me hold the door for him, or pay for dates, or letting me buy him whatever he wants. I want to be the giver, but in return, for the authority (as every man should want). It could just be because of the environment I grew up...

If we are living together and I lose my job (covid) for almost a year I don’t want to worry about where my next meal is coming from.

I hope that if the situation is the other way around I could one day provide for my partner. (I secretly wish I was rich so he would never have to lift another finger but thats a different issue)

Its a contributing factor. I don’t want either of us to go hungry because that sucks and destroys a relationship.

There’s an income floor to be in my inner social circle (and I want my man to be my innermost social circle), but once you hit that, money doesn’t mean a thing. I’ve curved rich men I wasn’t attracted to and been head over heels for men who make a third of my salary. When I was young I didn’t care a bit about money but now I’m a grownup and I understand its importance.
