As a former lifeguard of over 8 years, if you find yourself in a situation where someone is holding you under water, a trick they taught us in training was to pinch as hard as you can at their underarm (tricep). They’ll let go real quick, and that’s your chance to swim down and away. When someone grabs you by the feet it’s a little more tricky, but since most people are way lighter in the water they taught us for this scenario was to go sink down to their level and grab their wrists, move your hands up to the same spot under the arm and pinch as hard as you can. If that’s not an option getting down to their level and a quick jab to the nose will absolutely get you a release for you to swim away to safety. This is horrifying that this woman had to endure something like this more than once!

I can remember in the 80's and 90's there being women only gyms...but since we are living in hyper-misogyny times, and men are rolling back women's gains and rights everywhere we look, its par for the course that our "safe spaces" are being removed everywhere. This is not "bitter" hyperbole...this is really happening..every where, every day, in every place...the backlash is real. Yes I kinda ranted, but this topic is one I get fired up about as I was grabbed/groped in a bathroom (which are also being opened up to men) I guess its a little personal

For gyms and swimming pools, if you have an Islamic centre in your area check if they have a gym or swimming pool. If they do it will have female timings/female only, and they might be willing to accommodate you

Years ago, I went to a gym geared towards women. Not sure if men were allowed in there or not but it was amazing. A bunch of wonderful ladies working out and uplifting one another. They should make these places more common.
I have yet to find such an amazing place, again, and just work out at home to avoid. . .you know.

My local public pool has a time slot every Thursday morning that is strictly women-only. And, oh my god, what a success that is!
Only one pool is open during that time but that pool is full of women all morning. I swim during that time too because it is so freeing to be able to swim without the feeling of men leering at you. It was also the only time I could convince my less confident female friends to go swimming with me.
Next to that, this women-only time slot really has given a lot of muslim women the opportunity to swim. It makes me really happy how the pool has suddenly become extremely popular among muslim housewives. It's also fun how much socializing there is going on during this: women spend time meeting up by the side of the pool, joke around in the water and swim side by side gossiping about whatever the whole morning.
Despite that, it is bittersweet to see how many women are having to relearn how to swim. You can easily see that many women had to give up on swimming as soon as their body started developing and they have since forgotten how to swim. I was shocked at how bad my high school friend, whom I always considered to be very sporty, was at swimming. She's the daughter of strict muslim migrants and she told me her parents made her give up on all her swimming classes at the age of 7-8. By the looks of it, that must have been an experience many of the women there could relate to.

I would fucking love a women only pool! I love swimming and before I moved there was a pool on my way to work, where you could enter the pool behind the showers and could swim outside to the swimming lanes. That was great too.

Did she say why the assaulter wasn't kicked out of the pool? Even if they didn't witness the assault, it sounds like he didn't deny it and they did witness him swimming too slow in the fast lane. That is so frustrating.
She said she had to leave, which I assumed meant she felt she had to leave for her own safety since the assaulter was staying.

Yeah she said she reported it to the lifeguard, but they hadn’t seen it and it was basically just her word against his. She left the pool for her own safety, told the manager just before she left and later phoned the police. They said they would look at CCTV footage, I don’t know any more than that.

Men just can't stand women being better at something than them. Not life threatening like that situation, but I had an in-law scrote mad at me last week because I spoke Finnish better than him (he never spoke or took Finnish lessons in his life, he's not even of Finnish decent). He got all pissy at me because I told him how "sauna" is actually pronounced, and then he tried to mansplain that the English pronunciation was the proper way, then told me that speaking multiple languages is not a sign of intelligence and doesn't take that much brain power to learn languages. Truly the male ego is so fragile. So much so that women are at risk of actually having their lives ended.

As a master degree student I was selected to be part of a very select project. It just happened that we were only women there. A male colleague threatened me he should push me off the stairs to take my place in the project. He later said he was only joking. We both know how this goes. Men say they were joking when they know they crossed a line but are tok much of an asshole to apologize.

ah... I don't know about that but he was very jealous and petty. I was not afraid of him. what I did was say it out loud in front of other colleagues and treat it as a joke. the more people knew about his "plan", the better for me.
we were in the same specialisation and this guy and other men would often hit on me or my colleagues. We were well into a postgrad program so... we were well into adulthood. Dunno to this day why some men think that postgrad is like "live tinder". shame on them!some had long term girlfriends, some had wives and kids. married men really are shameful when placed among unmarried women!

I posted this in another sub who shared Dr. Perry's story but I'll comment it here again:
I've never been physically attacked when swimming but I relate to this super hard. I've encountered SO many (usually middle aged or old) guys get really mad because I swim faster than them.
Once I was just casually lap swimming at the YMCA and because there were so many people we had to split lanes. I ended up in a lane with this old middle aged guy and he swam in the middle of the lane and just would not let me pass him. When I managed to swim around him and got to the wall, he started going off on me calling me a b*tch and some racial slurs that I won't be repeating here. Literally ruined my whole day....
Why can't these men understand that not everything is a competition and a woman happening to be faster is not meant at a personal attack??

I guess I'm glad I swim super slow, the worst I've experienced in public pools is horrible halitosis that you could smell halfway across the pool.
Honestly while I prefer the long course having short course with everyone in their own lane is sometimes better. A lot of people just don't seem to understand how lanes work.
