Sex is political. It can be used to imply a whole lot of other things. You can leverage money or resources or social influence to get sex. You can also leverage a social network or social skills to get sex. For some people, sex is both a mechanism to flaunt what they have, and a natural consequence and advantage of having those things. Sex affirms their value as people as a result.

For other people, sex implies they have a relarionship with whoever they have sex with. That relationship usually encompasses other things like having someone to support them or someone to plan their lives with or just someone they like being around. So having sex can also be an extension of that.

For other people, sex is about control. If you can't have it outside marriage and all marriages need a church or state official to be legalized, sex becomes a resource that can be controlled and thus its a method of large organizations exerting population control.

People who aren't having sex are people who usually lack other signals of social value, don't have a lot of close social bonds, and aren't high in organizational hierarchies as a rule. So they have low social value. But this cuts both ways, in that those people are harder for a society to control because that lever to control them functionally doesn't exist. Which is why radical groups and extremists are usually people who don't have a lot of sex through one method or another and a lot of countries with sexual issues at the macro scale usually have them as a symptom of the system breaking down at a larger scale.

Like many have stated, ppl have sex to procreate...it is hardwired into our biology to reproduce for the survival of a species. You've stated that if that is indeed true, why are so many ppl not having children. I believe the issue is that society has influenced 1/2 that equation. We still have a desire to have sex to satiate our animalistic desires...but we've come up with various birth control methods. Society has made the pressures of raising a child much more costly than in the past. Where having a child was easier to raise and also ensured your blood line survived, while eventually providing physical labor in the future. Imagine if society would immediately punch you in the gut right after you have sex and there was no way around it...ppl would physically conditioned to not desire sex.

Perhaps you are wired a bit differently? maybe a chemical imbalance? lower T? It's not likely a problem, be happy you are not driven by animal lust and could make more logical decisions.

Sex is pretty important for the survival of the species. But that being said, I think we are seeing an overrepresentation of sex in media and online because a lot of that is targeted towards young people where the only thing they’re thinking about is sex. If you’re in your teens and 20’s, relationships and sex is probably a dominant thing on your mind because that’s the new cool, shiny thing everyone’s doing. All people wanted to talk about in my 20’s were relationships and related stuff. I matured a bit slower and only started being in a relationship when I was 28, by that time everyone is bored of this topic since they just spent the last 10 years talking about it. Now they’re all obsessed about their children and investing / real estate strategies. But people that fall into predictable and non drama filled lives doesn’t make for good entertainment.

I was discussing this with a friend earlier. I find the obsession with it odd too since more often than not it's about pleasure instead of mating. People like to compare us to other animals but with the exception of some apes and dolphins other animals are just trying to procreate. Maybe our grandparents that had lots of kids out of necessity were following their innate reproduction instinct.

People in modern western countries? It's recreational. It's not a need at all unless you're a sex addict. People derive pleasure from all sorts of things but we don't conflate need with want the same way. Sex brings people joy and being happy is important but at what point is the pursuit of sex such an arduous task that it's a drain on your happiness? If it's your goal it sure is less linear and more dependent on things outside your control than most others. If people wanna nut in a vagina so bad they should just buy a prostitute.

Agree with you. I thought sex was underrated, then I did it. Nothing changed. I'm Brazil it is a hell worse compared to other cultures. Sucessfull music nowadays, here, it's all about using someone or being used sexually, along with explicit mention to sexual stuff. This is very boring. Produce something else, talk about any other thing than sexual.

It's one of the main aspects of the human condition. The reproductive system is one of the major systems of the human body. From a naturalistic perspective it's the meaning of life; that is: to reproduce and further the evolution of the species. It's one of the desires we (almost) all share like eating and sleeping.

Our society is formed around our biology so of course sex will seep into just about every aspect of it.

I don't care about the sex at all. I never have. It's not that I hate it but I simply do not understand the obsessive appeal sex has over our culture.

Please believe that I'm not trying to shit on you. Can you honestly say you've considered the full spectrum of what people can find "sexy"? Can you honestly say you've spent a reasonable amount of time trying to figure out what "works" for you, in terms of sexual pleasure? For example: I know I'm not gay because I can honestly consider "OK, when I think about that man, does that man make me feel...?"

In terms of experimenting with trying different things ... I'm not going to go into detail. Most adolescent boys have a good idea of what "works" for them. In contrast, there are some women who say they don't get much pleasure out of sex, but if you dig a little deeper, it turns out they never tried masturbation, so they never figured out what "works" for them. Maybe you're like that too.

If you can, I'd suggest talking to a doctor, maybe get some blood work done. Maybe there's some biological reason behind your "meh" attitude about sex.

Maybe you have a strong asexual tendency, and that's OK too.

I can call her up whenever and have a companion who cares. That matters way more to me than fucking her.

It's not an either/or thing. However, for better or worse, it can be difficult (i.e., impossible) to find a best friend who could fill the same non-sexual role that a spouse plays.

The incels obsess over sex like it's the one thing that's gonna save them from their depression. Then they have sex and lo and behold–they're still suicidal.

I don't think you understand incels. It's more like: can you think of what you most like to do? What you get a lot of enjoyment out of? Your favorite thing to do? (e.g., what your girlfriend does when she's "a companion who cares"). Now, imagine you can't do that for whatever reason, no matter how hard you try to make it possible. How would that situation make you feel?

I don't get it either. Sex is one of the least important things in my life. If my man suddenly couldn't have penetrative sex, I would not have a problem with that. Oral sex is nice, so I would hope that he would still be pleasing me. But if he couldn't, I would be fine as well.

I definitely wouldn't leave a happy, intimate, and loving relationship that I have now to get a dick.

Answer is not that simple. One reason is for a long time it was suppressed successfully by religion and society. And in the last 100-200 years a lot as changed(contraception, globalisation , internet). People are now free to express any way they want to(in most of the places). What we are seeing is just people reacting to newly acquired freedom. We have not settled yet, market drives most of the content that we consume and how we react to it. Don’t let this things bother you I guess. There are things above sex, more important things. Just like there are more important things than food. Good luck explaining to a hungry man or an overweight person who just won’t stop eating unhealthy food knowing it’s not good for them. Enjoying sex doesn’t make you a better or worse person. It’s a normal and healthy activity. People who obsess over it are I guess more animalistic(priests, incels, redpillers, rapists) in nature than human.
