I (33M) am 1.5 years post-divorce (6 year total relationship)

Started dating again after taking time to have fun and be single and work on myself.

Started dating someone (30F) and we’ve been going out consistently for 2.5 months.

I had let her know I was in a 6 year relationship but didn’t tell her that for 2 of them I was married.

I took her out to dinner to express to her how much I want to continue progressing our relationship and that I’m not looking to date anyone else/be exclusive. I also wanted to share that I was married - didn’t want to vocalize getting more serious without her knowing that.

Quick context: her friend is going thru a divorce, so the topic has come up frequently since she’s supporting her friend. I just never felt comfortable or appropriate to interject my personal and sensitive experience into the conversation. Everyone’s situation is different.

Fast forward to the dinner. We have a great time and I told her I want to check in with us, expressed how I feel, and also let her know that I am divorced (1.5 years removed). Said it’s something I was finally compelled to tell her since I’m taking us seriously and that I’m an open book about it now that I’ve put it out there.

She was taken aback which was somewhat expected. But in the moment and overall that night, she was more happy about what I had expressed - us mutually wanting to continue growing the relationship.

Fast forward to the next morning. I wake up to a text saying call me I couldn’t sleep at all last night because of the “big” news I dropped. Called her right away to see how I can quell her anxiety (also her word choice).

TL:DR she said she “felt hurt” (through choking tears) that I didn’t tell her sooner about the divorce. She then cancelled the planned introduction to my friend and his gf and said she needed more time to process. I said okay that’s fine.

~ AITAH for not telling her sooner?

In my mind, this is MY personal history of which I fully expected to share when I felt comfortable doing so…which is what I did.

Honestly, I’m a little turned off that she felt hurt. Shocked, surprised, and/or having many questions is understandable and expected. But hurt?
