my cousin's in laws worshipped her like a goddess until she got married, then they crossed every boundary when she gave birth. they insisted the married couple live with them, she never got to raise her children how she wanted and she was treated like a handmaid. shes now divorced and working as a lawyer. dont fall for manipulative men and their families
edit - just wanted to add that she worked from the very bottom, she was cut off completely both financially and emotionally from her family. my parents helped her but she really worked hard to put herself where she is now. her ex husband moved back with his parents and the children are with her

Annnnnd this is why I changed my last name to my mom's maiden name when my parents got divorced. He was an absentee LVM father and I didn't want anything to do with him.

Fucking power move! 👌 I should have done that.
[–]the_marsipanFDS Newbie26 points27 points28 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You're right, that IS one hell of a power move! I never even thought about this before but now I feel like I should consider my grandmothers maiden name as it's been really just her, my mom and me at the core of our little family. None of the men involved in our lineage stepped up to anything more than bare LVM minimum, so why would THEIR name deserve the honor? Fuel for serious thought...

I actually considered this previously and took it upon myself to merge the spelling of my and SO’s last names as a simple letter change could easily signify our own lineage to start a solid foundation with, as my “family” does not have a lineage as out of wedlock child with no biological SO’s I am aware of.
I thought it was cute and symbolic and kind of dope, he did not like that he would have to change his last name.
Bummer. Thought I had something for a minute over these last 10 years. 🤷♀️

Interesting! One option I was considering was going up the female line in my family to the oldest relative I personally knew, my great grandma, who lived to be 103. Similarly, nobody in my close family shares that name, although there are distant cousins. Though, I'm not sure if I want to go that route because she did take my great grandpa's name. As opposed to just selecting something entirely on my own.
Thanks for sharing! I appreciate that you went with something along a similar line of thinking that I am considering.

I did the same thing for different reasons. My dad was the ultimate HVM, god rest his soul, but I changed my last name to my mom's maiden name to honor her. My son got my maiden name in exchange.

My parents aren't divorced, but they might as well be. I'm keeping my last name no matter, what though, because I've never liked anyone's last name enough that I've dated. I won't change my name, when I get my doctorates either.

It makes more sense for people to take their mother’s last name. If the child came out of the woman, there’s no denying that it belongs to her. Whereas with the father, it has to be proven with a DNA test.
Women pass on unique antibodies and mitochondria to their offspring that men never will.
Mitochondrial DNA has been the same down the female line and has been inherited from mother to offspring in all humans. This means you have the same mitochondrial DNA as your mother, as well as your great-great-grandma, and so on.
A mother passes her antibodies to her offspring in the placenta to help protect the child from infections. There’s also evidence that breast milk helps improve a child’s immune system.
Women are pretty special 💕

Well actually thats why children get the fathers name historically it was the only way for men to claim children. The child’s mother is obvious like you said. Even to this day if a married woman has a child her husband is assumed to be the father by law. So even if he wasn’t (like she cheated or something) the child is legally his responsibility because he was married to the mom. Marriage and name changing is for men to have kids not women. Ultimately I don’t care about taking a man’s name in marriage but what I don’t get is when a woman has a baby with her bf and gives the bf’s name to the child. Um he’s not your husband so why are you giving the child his name?? Just bizarre to me. Maybe its so she can more easily sue him for child support? 🤔

Yeah, I don't get this either. There is NO EXPECTATION that the kid will have to have the father's last name when the parents are not married.
Traditionally, when a couple marries they share a last name. (I'm not saying it has to be this way, but it's tradition.) Then the kids will also have that same last name.
But traditionally, the woman doesn't take the man's last name when he's just her boyfriend. So why should her kid have his last name? He would probably pitch a fit if she wanted to have his last name even though they're not married. But it's okay for the kid to have his last name? HELL NO.

Yep I was arguing about this to my friend and she was like but it’s his baby. Lol wtf!! No it’s my baby because he’s not husband, he can put a ring on it if he wants his name. That’s a total marriage privilege being handed out for nothing! Ladies remember that marriage is for men and they have to impress you to choose them. They have to woo you with diamonds for a reason there is never a reason to give marriage privileges without marriage protections.

I had a coworker who was a single mom before she met her husband. Her son had her last name from birth. When she got married her son was 6 and she told us that he cried learning he was going to have to change his last name. It was over the summer and he was worried nobody at school would know his name anymore when they went back to school. This broke my heart to hear, I don't understand why her husband couldn't take her name since he was joining an existing family and spare this poor child an identity crisis he doesn't understand.

It's not just the men, it's ALSO their families! I can't stress enough to the young childless women on here: Be very very wary of overbearing parents and family of the man you intend to marry and have children with. They WILL try to stomp all over your boundaries and undermine your decisions as a mother, since they tend to see a woman's child as "property of the patriarchal clan". They see the mother as "our son's incubator".

Jeez, is he aware that some couples aren't able to have kids? And it's the man's problem as often as it is the woman's. You wouldn't believe how many men expect their partners to go through invasive fertility testing before they're even willing to jerk off into a cup to check their sperm.

Not even just the man's family. My ex took my last name and right before the wedding my OWN FATHER whose name I was continuing told me he thought it felt wrong for the man to change his name. (And the marriage was wrong but the name thing turned out to be a great call.)

My son has my last name. My partner was 100% supportive. Understanding that I have far more right to hand down my surname as it's incredibly unique and yknow... I RISKED LIFE AND BODILY INTEGRITY TO BRING HIM INTO THE WORLD.
When his parents found out our son would be having my name they were just completely blank. Totally stunned and confused. Like we'd told them a scan showed the baby was a cat. "But... why is the baby getting her name?" "Because she's carrying and birthing him and said from before conception that any child would have her name?" "Can't you both hyphenate names?" "Her surname is already hyphenated and in double digit characters. Triple barrelled name is absurd now shush."

Even before you're a mother! My ex's family couldn't understand why my own family was a priority over them, didn't appreciate the effort I did make with them, and expected me to give up my lucrative and very rewarding career to go work in, and I shit you not, their local tesco in a part of the world that is intolerant to my religion. The early warning signs for this is if they're constantly posting things on your facebook wall when you've barely even met them, and if they seem to reduce you down to a couple of key facts and don't understand that your personality extends beyond that.

Oh my god yes. I have very distinct fair skin...my husband’s family are all tan (we are all white but they just tan very easily). My son came out with my fair skin and my eyes. He’s also only 1.5 so for the first few months when he was a newborn potato head it was hard to tell what he was going to look like. My husband’s family is obsessed with bringing up “how much he looks like a member of the (dad’s last name) family. “If we had another brother this is what he would look like”...umm maybe if I was the mother and he got half my genes 😂 they are 90% why we are divorcing.

I cannot up vote this enough. Be wary of enmeshment between the mother and her son. There's some crazy shit that goes on there, and they will try to steal your authority as a parent and frame it as if you're the one being unreasonable. There are a lot of men out there who might as well be married to their mothers.

I'm vehemently against automatically giving a child his or her father's name. Considering how many children are raised without their fathers in their lives anyway, it makes no sense whatsoever.

Never thought of this before, but how fucking true! I was thinking again today about how men always act like women are the ones who desperately want kids, and force them to have them. But in reality a lot of men do. Because they want to pass down their genes and name, and say “look what I did!” Without putting any actual effort into anything besides the conception. Which was probably not that great for the woman these days with all the Porn sick men out there. Ugh.
Wow, I feel like you took the words right out of my mouth. It's crazy how men act like they don't want to get married or have kids, when they are the ones who majorly benefit from both. And then the media gaslights women into thinking we're lucky to get the short end of the stick. It shows how truly fucked our society is

I, strangely don't have an issue with surnames, because there is another one I take more offense at. In my country, children take their grandparents names. The first two children take the paternal grandparents names and the next two the maternals'. I took ,as first, my paternal grandmother's name and my sister my maternal grandmother's. Then later my mother's younger brother got married, had kids and named his son, first kid, after his father. When second kid was born, girl, my aunt decided that since my grandmother already had a granddaughter with her name she would name the new baby after her own family. Apparently there was a big fight and I am still mad on my aunt's behalf. She want to all the trouble of making my cousin and then she wouldn't get to name her? She was the only person that wasn't being unreasonable in that situation. I don't particularly like my parents names, I find them too common, but if my husband ever told me that we would use his family's names after I did all the work I would also be mad

It's my opinion that fathers should never be considered equal parents to mothers under the law because they aren't. He didn't grow it inside of him, he didn't birth it, he didn't breastfeed it, and he probably didn't even take care of it. A good portion of fathers don't even care enough about their children to make sure they get healthy food.

I still have my mother's maiden name because my dad wasn't there to sign his name on the certificate when I was born. They literally could've gone back to the hospital at any time within the year to make the change too, but they never did. When I was 9 or 10 he started guilt tripping me about taking his surname, but I'd have to change all my documents and update my school records etc which just made 0 sense to me. As someone who is into genealogy I can tell you that the whole last name thing really makes it difficult to track your female ancestors too. It just gets confusing, especially with Nordic cultures and their "so and so's daughter" being the format of their last names. It's also an erasure of them and their history in my eyes.

its ALWAYS about the men. and their fragile ego. i got my mum's last name and being an Indian that's extremely uncommon. so many and i when i say that i mean 99% of the guys i dated, were baffled at that. when you tell them 1. you won't change your last name after getting married and 2. your kid will get your last name (if you decide to have one, which is not the case for me anymore) - they lose it and that's when you show them the door lol

Yes! I used to think it was fair because of how women are the real parents. So it was like a consolation prize, so they could feel more involved.
So women have to have the baby and then also basically give the father a little treat so he doesn't feel left out. Like how some people give a present to a birthday child's siblings...
Men aren't interested in making biology "fair". I don't think it can be done, anyway. So why did I think it was so important?!
[–]allthatglitters22FDS Newbie11 points12 points13 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
This. So fucking unfair. The father of my children abandoned me for 2/3 pregnancies. I was left to fend for myself. Fortunately my family stepped up and helped me. I hate myself for allowing them to have his last name instead of mine.

Give yourself a break, we're all impacted by the incessant patriarchal bullshit. It's only natural some of it seeps in! I'm sure you are your kids' number 1 on every real level.
My friend was engaged to a guy who was determined she should take his name when they married even though she didn't want to. He said it would "upset his grandparents" (eye roll). I told her to stand her ground but she found the pressure hard to deal with. Thankfully they broke up instead!
I got my last name from my dad, but he's a pretty good dad in the main. Also, it's a unique name but short and easy to spell and pronounce so I feel like I hit the surname jackpot in many ways. I actually think when it came to kids the aesthetic and practical considerations of the surname would be at the forefront of my mind. The alternative surname would have to be damn special for me to consider it.
