I wish I had been told this. At 20 I fell for an LVM at school who was very talented in one niche area, but supremely unmotivated and immature. I fell completely for the potential, helped him with school (he admits he wouldn’t have graduated without me, or at least not easily), helped him in moving out on his own. After all this he wanted an open relationship, etc. I eventually dumped him but we remained friends.

Now at 30, I own my own car and home, have retirement accounts (not with much yet but I’m building!), a master’s degree, a job I love in the niche field he and I both studied for, and feel like I have a sustainable lifestyle.

But he’s just as immature. He called me just recently saying he wants to leave the big city because he feels directionless (I left five years ago for a smaller but still urban community I love). He doesn’t have a real job, just gigs. He keeps all his savings in a regular bank account. No car. Roommate he doesn’t like. Still super talented and has potential, but still that same floundering dude. They don’t change.

I've met guys who didn't really work, lived in shitholes and maybe took an online class here or there and the rest of their time was spent on porn, going to the gym, and whatever else they wanted to do. They probably just lived off student loans doing the minimum and as far as I know none of them are gainfully employed many years later. Current society has encouraged men to be hedonistic, selfish, non-providers. I came out of college with a good amount of debt that took me ten years to pay off but I did it. My ex husband doesn't help me out despite that he was gifted land by his father and has so many resources. I'm the primary caregiver for our children and he's the one with nest egg, never finished college, not gainfully employed, while nearly everything I make goes to our kids. I am definitely teaching my daughters to protect themselves, I was raised to believe a man took care of his family. Just not true.
